OK, no easy way to say this. At my last performance appraisal, I was told that now that I'm a section head my management expects me to do more at work. Between that and my wife having more time next semester to do things outside of work, I won't have time to keep up with this campaign. I'm sorry to drop it now, but "If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done quickly." See you all around the boards.

Does Peredur have any way of getting Gustav's attention?

PS: Never post drunk. Bad idea. Could be worse, though--I recall a story about one of my favorite GMs, Back In The Day, who had been using some innocuous but illicit pharmaceuticals one night. His gf, not realizing this, got him to run a game for her and a friend, and things got a little out of hand. What can I say? It was the 70s.

Peredur shakes his head at the byplay between the bard and lawyer, but continues to surreptitiously monitor the spectators. A good recovery, but I'm afraid we're going to be in trouble for this. Some of the professor's bequest will likely go to paying off the fines. I only hope the crowd doesn't turn on us after that ill-timed bit of theatrics--I'd best watch closely for any sign of that.

Besides, Sour Heck will have his chance on recross, right? And luckily Ustalav doesn't seem to have that whole tainted fruit of the poisoned tree doctrine (or whatever it's called; been a few years since I had to deal with it), or Gustav never would have put one of us up to testify.

Fair point, but we were chasing down a significant lead on an investigation, and we already had some indication that Lepidstadt's legal system differed from US standard in at least a few ways. OTOH, I see no indication that we met with Gustave between Karb Isle and V&G's, which would have been the appropriate time for him to tell us that maybe we needed to get a warrant.

ETA: That's a new look for you, GM.

Is that something Gustav would have told us, or warned us about?

Peredur shakes his head minutely, hearing the change in the tenor of the crowd. Let's finish this quickly. There's something we're still missing here, and I'm anxious to be about it.

Peredur nods appreciatively. Gustav seems much more confident now than he was before...he must be feeling better about the case.

Peredur looks for spectators looking at him and the rest of the party.

On the extremely off chance that any of you are in the area of Lombard, Illinois, my wife and I are having a small party for our 25th anniversary. It's in Room 943 at the Westin Lombard, from 8 to midnight. Munchies, cake, and punch (of the nonalcoholic variety, as I am on some meds that don't play well with alcohol).

I think we're going to let Sour Heck do the talking and presenting, unless there's a need to call any of us as witnesses.

Peredur keeps quiet and watches the proceedings, trying to gauge if any of the lower-threshold potential mob leaders are near him (i.e., the people who were most willing to shout first).

We didn't have time to have Father Cidoimoikis do the speak with dead, did we?

Stifling a yawn, Peredur makes sure his Pharasmin spiral is obvious, then queues up to get into the gallery. If pressed he'll hand over his sword to the guard.

I'm also good with letting Sour Heck do the talking again. It's worked out well so far. (Besides, Iesha is the only other reasonably charismatic person in the party, and she's a half-elf. IIRC, they're not too popular in Ustalav.)

Peredur sheathes his sword and holds his hands well away from his body, but allows Sour Heck to do the talking.

I'm hoping it doesn't say, "Guess which spell I prepared today!"

"Let it down easily, Eloise--th' skin's deserving of some respect, even if th' filling isn't."

The ranger shakes his head. "It's thinking I am now that Vorkstag dealt with th' Sanctuary for someone else, someone who fears being discovered. Eloise, would you see if there's anything of magic about 'fore we take down th' body?"

Sure, as long as it's close to V&G.

"Hold a moment, Sour Heck. It's thinking I am that yon body wasn't there when we arrived." Sword and shield ready, Peredur advances towards the tree.

"We can only carry a fraction of th' items here for now--best we take th' most critical clues, in case either of th' miscreants return."

Actually, what time is it? Can we find a convenient street urchin who'd be willing to go fetch someone from the temple while we wait here?

The mongrelman skin and at least one of the other skins, plus both ledgers. You mentioned a handcart--is that big enough for us to wheel stuff around town in? Are there other carts here that we could use?

Unless anyone objects, let's go to the temple and get an affidavit describing the skins, then take that to the court. Maybe we can get Andrew's attorney to look for anything of interest about the people the skin stealer was impersonating.

Peredur eyes the lightning rod. "It's thinking I am to leave that in place for now--th' place would like as not burn down in th' next storm, and th' neighbors wouldn't appreciate that. Shall we try to sell th' two wands?"

"Eloise, best for you to take th'--scroll, if that's what you'd call it. Can you learn th' spells graved on it?"

"Eloise, can you tell anything of yon trap? Th' magic of it is such that I can probably riddle it out, though I'd like to know something of its nature in case I slip at th' wrong moment."

Peredur shrugs. "More to learn, aye, but for now I think we've enough to clear Andrew. Let's to th' temple--these poor remnants have gone too long uninterred, and th' priests will give us an affidavit describing them for th' court. And we'll get Sour Heck healed up for tomorrow's testimony."

The ranger pauses at Eloise's suggestion, ruminating. "Aye, I'm with you in that. It makes me wonder, though--what was th' skin stealer's motive for burning down Brada's Sanctuary?"

Peredur nods. "Though that pair will have worse than us on their backtrail, once word of what we found gets out. It's thinking I am that Father Cidoimoikis will have a very great interest in th' head's replies about th' dealings 'tween Doctor Brada and these two."

Oh, there's a surprise.

"Here's th' back way out, I'm thinking." Peredur takes a quick look around the apparent entry to the sewers, checking for tracks to get an idea how often it was used, and how recently.

Taking 10 on Survival check for tracking for a 22; add +2 if shapechangers involved, or add +4 if undead.

Also, what's on the other side of the grille?

"It's thinking I am that Pharasma's priests and th' secular authorities will find much of interest in these records. "

That's right--Eloise is the only other one who can use it, and she's got a better weapon plus a need to keep her off hand free.

"What was that you said of Vorkstag, Sour Heck--that it was some sort of malign fey? Skin stealer, or some such? Mayhap this is its clothes closet." Peredur reseats his shield and examines the cabinet carefully. Taking 10 on Perception check to start with, for a 27 including favored community bonus.

I'm taking credit for the mw thieves' tools in my skill check, but you're right--I never wrote it down in gear. Same with the keen longsword--listed in attacks, not in gear. I'll update that.

Also, I think a bunch of the magic effects no longer apply.

Not that it matters with those rolls, but Peredur's current AC vs. undead is 18--no shield, but he's got the Favored Defense feat that lets him take half his favored enemy bonuses to AC against those enemies. Not sure how to put situational ACs on his header without cluttering it up massively, though.

Peredur advances to support the impetuous bard, but on seeing the enemies in the room he trades his shield for a dagger.

Once on the ground, Peredur takes up his shield again and follows the noise of the explosion(s). "It's thinking I am that Sour Heck has found our wayward fey."

Is it possible to crawl on the planks?
