Awesome story. Can't wait to see how it concludes!

I'm worried as well.

For the record, I wasn't worried until you told us we were fighting a 9th level creature. ;)

Works for me.

So am I reading this right? The whole family are actually trappers...like the monster? Basically darkmantles that instead of looking like stalactites, look like pleasant children and their widower father? And escaping the yuan-ti cult you took them to Erarat to keep them safe, right?

Yes, that's correct. I got the idea from Paizo's take on the trapper in Misfit Monsters Redeemed where the trapper is the female form of the lurking ray.

Grimcleaver wrote:
If so, they don't really require looking after much...except to keep them from getting hungry and om-nomming folks.

Yeah, it's easier if they remain safely on Erarat, otherwise the number of NPCs onboard the Lucky Leprechaun will swell to Normandy-levels of person-spacelessness.

Grimcleaver wrote:
And if I read it right, your animal companion is a trapper--one of the family who helped fight off the yuan-ti, who now takes the form of (I'm guessing your big suitcase right?) various furnishings.

She's blending in with the luggage at the moment, but Aunty Edie's soon gonna find an extra fleece unaccounted for.

Grimcleaver wrote:
Personally I like the idea that keeping with the Kill Bill idea, she'd fallen in love with father Von Trapper, forsaking her vestal vows--and that her trapper companion is actually her Bee-Bee. That's messed up in a way I really enjoy. So now a lot of her motivation is trying to turn her cute little daughter into a real girl instead of a creature that's mostly mouth and teeth that can impersonate luggage.

I do like this better than my original concept as it ties in nicely with Aleena's plot hook, but is it tough love, or child abuse to send your child into combat as a meat shield?

Thanks guys! The weird mash-ups are one of the best parts of D&D, as well as getting the flavour to match the mechanics (and vice versa). I remember a type of yuan-ti called the pureblood, so perhaps we can work some Harry Potter references in too! Aleena would love to beat up some Deatheaters!

In order to address the plothole of how Aleena's supposed to look after the von Trapper children, I'd like to reskin the Fey Beast Tamer's blink dog as Dobby the Housecarl, elf, gnome babysitter. And as a gnome, I think he's automatically an accredited pilot!

Peasant Railgun: So what ratio of Bea-*BLEEP* to Maria do you see for your character? Deadly Viper Assassins? Bill? Hatori Hanzo? Austere Austrian Lord? Nazi takeover? Musical numbers? Frankly any combination of these elements sound like a blast--I'm just trying to get a bead on who your character is and what she's after (which really could run the gambit from running windmilling through fields of wildflowers to what the newspapers call a "roaring rampage of revenge.")

About a 33/67 split between B and Maria. I'm going to try and incorporate as many of these elements in as I can for maximum fun! I might have painted myself into a corner with such a character concept, but here it goes:

Not quite fitting in amongst her sistren of the Fiercely Virginal Order of Blessed Exoneration (an order of warrior nuns dedicated to all forms of combat), Aleena was ordered by Mother Superior Wilhelmina to accept the role of governess to the unruly von Trapper children. Whilst living in their vast, underground demesne, Aleena soon grew fond of the von Trapper brood, but unbeknownst to her the von Trappers were actually part of a secret breeding program by the Church of Zehir (the equivalent on Erarat) to create an army of assassin trappers.

Aleena was later betrayed by Wilhelmina—actually a secret cultist of the Zehir-equivalent—who sent her yuan-ti servitors to attack the von Trapper demesne. Captain Dita von Trapper (trapper warlord 11/battle captain), with a bit help from Aleena, manage to fend off the yuan-ti, allowing Aleena and the von Trapper family to escape to Erarat.

Will you permit me to reskin the Sentinel's animal companion as Dita von Trapper? As a trapper she can disguise herself as various floor furnishings such as an ornate carpet or bearskin rug. And while standing within her aura 1, she's actually providing literal support like some kind of anti-fatigue floormat.

Abbess Wilhelmina earned the nickname "Bill" due to her favouring the bill over other polearms such as the glaive-guisarme, Bec de corbin, and Lucerne hammer. Aleena hopes use the Abbess' fondness for collecting rare melee weapons to track her down and kill her.

Peasant Railgun: I'm having some trouble with the link to your stats, sorry. I know it's probably a pain, but if I could at least get you to post a broadstrokes version for me to look at,

No hassle at all. I've put the summary up, and I'll add the modifiers and expand on the character traits, feats, and powers tomorrow (local time).

In order to keep the ball rolling, let me present my candidate for the role of leader: Sister Aleena Thurman.

Think Maria from the Sound of Music meets the Bride from Kill Bill.

Sorry to hear that Seth, I hope we get to game together in the future!

You're too kind. :) I didn't want Zerombr to have to miss out on the game he so wanted.

Cool, I'll relinquish my spot for Rev Rosey.

Grimcleaver wrote:
Sooner I can hear from Railgun the better, just to know he's alive out there.

I'm Still Alive! Here are some character concepts:

  • A shifter hybrid cleric|druid (sentinel). He's part of a collaboration between the Church of Ioun and the Verdant Circle to preserve a copy of the Living Library (ancient druidic knowledge magically inscribed on tree bark) on Erarat. He often finds time away from duties to indulge in some picking on the surface. (Although he's nominally of the leader role, he can fill in for some of the other three roles too.)

  • A human fighter, who traded in her priceless heirloom sword in return for sanctuary on Erarat (which was a good deal for her since the sword is allegedly cursed).

  • A dragonborn warlock. An option if no-one picks striker.

Zerombr wrote:
Okay so Railgun, personally I'd be happy to play one of my previous chars like Raya Iatos, the Paladin, or Shoso Makenzie the goofy Bard, so what'd you like to play?

I'd say Raya should step up to bat, so that Shoso can one day mock defeat the Reunion of Horrors with Norrin.

Sign me up too, if there's still room!

I apologize, my eyes were bigger than my mouth, and I had neither a Table-top nor college classes when I started. I hate letting players down, and contributing to one more PbP that didn't survive.

Hey, no need to apologise. Circumstances change, and I know it must have been a difficult choice to pull the plug. Personally, I think it was a success due to all those interesting places we got to visit in your world, and all the memorable interactions I had with the other player characters. A+++ would quest again!

Congratulations, Will. I refrained from voting for other entries just in case the vote got close, but it's good to see you had plenty of support.

Welcome, Ringtail and Sunshadow!

Ooh, how 'bout: a warden, warlord, and war wizard walk into a bar… actually that might make a viable party if a warlock and warpriest were at the bar too.

Wrath wrote:
We're currently running the Scales of War, but I'm finding I have to modify the plot fairly heavily to make more logical sense

That reminded me of a wiki that I'd bookmarked that might help with that.

Wrath wrote:
I'm tempted to restart my subscription, but then my old builder will update to not being able to use off line. A conundrum.

A subscription shouldn't change or update your old builder. I do most of the work in the old builder ('cause it's still a bit faster) then import to the new builder for the newer feats and the extra power card info for iPlay4e.

I'll stick with defender so Wrath can choose whatever he likes.

I'd like to bring Kevaras Zanorin out from his retirement as the mad abbot of Our Lady of Letherna monastery/boutique vineyard/hobby farm to take over from Rusty who'll open Bahamut's Bed & Breakfast—but don't tell him yet 'cause it's a surprise ;)

Aardvark DM wrote:
Jacen - Find his runaway wife?

Oh they weren't married yet, otherwise they would have eloped. He doesn't know that she didn't want him to have to choose between her and the church.

Aardvark DM wrote:
I think I will call the organization "Celeste's Chosen" or "Celeste's Children" or the reverse "Chosen/Children of Celeste". What do you think?

I think "Chosen" is stronger because it implies that Free mages weren't granted their powers in some kind of cosmic lottery but were pre-destined for great things. However people might confuse the group with the Chosen of [Deity] epic destiny if it can be chos—, picked.

Definitely, if it speeds things up.

Jacen is the third son from a noble family and joining the clergy was the only avenue available to a non-inheriting son. Jacen is conscious about his privilege and good looks, hoping to make his mark on the world through meritorious works instead.

So on second thought, I think Jacen would feel certain level of camaraderie with the common soldier and eschew the officer corps.

Cheers, Pat!

And thank you Aardvark DM, the ideals of Kavast sound perfect for Jacen.

As for background, I'm thinking Officer/Noble.

  • Does the Church of Kavast have an order similar to that of the Knights Hospitaller?
  • Are healers accorded officer status in the Legio like nurses and doctors in modern militaries?

acidrica wrote:
I hate to say it, but something happened today that will greatly reduce my availability for the next few weeks, so I'm going to have to drop out. I will keep watching you guys though, since this seems to be a pretty awesome group.

We all hope to see you again soon!

So due to current developments (and my chronic character ADHD), I've decided to run a Pezari human cleric of Kavast instead. If that's okay with you, Aardvark DM?

Also what does Kavast's holy symbol look like?

acidrica wrote:
I'm still interested in playing, but only if Peasant Railgun doesn't finish their character

You're still in the running as I'm just a standby passenger—erm, player… ;)

Aardvark DM wrote:
Otherwise, we may still need a leader before we start.

I'd be interested to join as a stand-by player running a Minotaur Runepriest hailing from Evo Pezar.

Do you allow Scales of War backgrounds (specifically Auspicious Birth)?

Aardvark Barbarian wrote:
Looking at Pat's post of group breakdown, it looks like a full defender might be useful. EDIT: was looking at the posts and characters for the thread, you are out a leader? Is that the case?

A cleric would be cool (and that's what I was going to rebuild Norrin as, if we survive...

Spoiler:
the bodaks and the horrible vat monster.
Thrugnipp wrote:
I also need some idea of what rituals it would be useful for him to have.

I think this is a good time to consider rituals too, if Norrin follows the clerical path.

Rev, how many rituals do I get to pick/buy?

I say we should try and find a recruit first, though I like the idea of companion characters as well. I feel it would be the best way to slot them back in when they're ready (and I'm curious to see how companions perform alongside PCs).

It's on, in a manner similar to that of Donkey Kong.

Last one we did (18 months back or so) was at the Royal Exhibition hotel near Central, so yeah, somewhere around there is probably reasonably handy and central for people.

I second the Royal Exhibition hotel for its proximity to Central and its serving of Cooper's Pale Ale.

Yeah, totally! That's why I put FF first! ;D

Fighting Fantasy was my gateway to D&D; I wanted a system with more verisimilitude than Advanced Fighting Fantasy.

I'm not sure what kind of game you're proposing.

Do you mean something like a GM-less adventure using Mythic Game Master Emulator?

Or a solo adventure like Fighting Fantasy or Choose You Own Adventure?

Welcome to the boards, Serenor!

You'll find that most of the posters here play Pathfinder RPG, although there are a few 4th Edition/Essentials players and lurkers as well.

I wish you luck in finding a group, and there's always online Play-by-Post games starting up in this section to scratch that gaming itch if you have the patience and time.

Interesting. I'll have to give it a try at the Essentials Game Day this Saturday when I pick up my copy of E1: Carnival of Tears.

It's cool! I would have given my spot to one of the brothers anyway, so that they could both join your game.

I saw your ad in Gamer Connection and would be interested in joining a 4e campaign set in Golarion.

The Pathfinder Campaign Setting: World Guide—The Inner Sea (PFRPG) Hardcover is what you're after. It's the main campaign setting book, though technically it's focused on the Inner Sea region, the two continents where all the current Adventure Paths and modules are set.

Master of the Fallen Fortress is fully up to date with the PathfinderRPG. It's not Paizo at their best but it's pretty solid and worth a look.

It's also worth a look because it includes pregenerated character sheets for the Advanced Player's Guide classes.

Is there any mountainous rain forest areas with reasonable access to the sea where I could put a coffee plantation? I have looked over the map and nothing really stands out except near the Sodden Lands.

Have you considered locating your coffee plantation further south in Sargava between Desperation Bay and the Bandu Hills?

Or perhaps in southern Varisia in the Fenwall Mountains near the Mushfens? Though it might be too far from the tropics to grow coffee or to sustain a rainforest without resorting to magic.
