Orson was born into small family that lived outside a small city of a few thousand people. The governor of the city was appointed by the current ruler, and the city flourished. The city was wealthy because many merchants would stop there on their way to the capital city. The lands around the town were fertile so the crop haul was always large, which led to a steady increase in the size of the city. Orson grew up on a farm outside the city, and learned how to handle himself with a sword from his father.
Almost every night, his father would train him how to fight and duel. When they weren't training, they worked in the fields and occasionally brought in their crops to the town to sell. For almost all of his young life, Orson worked on the farm and trained. When Orson was twenty years old he left the farm and began working with the group of guys who did some dirty work. They were almost exclusively hired to do dirty work, whether it be rough someone up, extort someone for some money, or make sure someone didn't back out of a deal.
This went on for a few years, and one day when they were roughing someone up in an alley, the governor's son walked by and saw what they were doing. The son ran in to intervene, and shouted at them. He told them who he was and ordered that they stop at once and leave the man alone. Orson spoke up and told him that they wouldn't listen to him. The rest of the men Orson worked with laughed at the son of the governor, and he became flustered. In his embarassment and anger, he challenged Orson to a duel. If he beat him, then they would leave the boy alone. If he lost then he would turn a blind eye and pretend that nothing happened. Orson gave a quick chuckle and accepted the duel.
The governor's son drew his sword, but Orson kept his sheathed. The son approached slowly and cautiously. Then son lunged at Orson with his blade, and Orson sidestepped the blow. Orson then quickly drew his katana and in one slash knocked the son on his back, blood coming out from his side. As he fell he let out a loud scream, and a few people turned towards the alley and saw Orson standing over the governor's son. One of them yelled out that someone had attacked a boy, and in less then a minute a patrol of guards approached Orson. Orson was unable to escape through the crowd of people gathering and was caught. His friends were caught as well and they were forced to tell what happened. Fearing for their lives, they said that the boy challenged Orson to a duel and Orson won. Orson's friends were let go, but Orson was arrested and brought to the governor. The governor in his grief of the lost of his son and anger sent Orson to Branderscar prison.
