Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3
Ugh, why did she have to run? Stupid girl, we're trying to save her. Maybe she is guilty, after all. She went out the window, great. I'll see if I can follow on the streets. Ophelia picks Aurelia back up, thank you, my friend. She leaves the room and heads for the street, attempting to do her best to follow through the streets.

I figured as much, but had to try. I don't want to cause a scene and I certainly don't want to scare her off. Ophelia sighs and looks to Nik, This should be the room. I don't really want to bash the door in, that would cause too much commotion. Maybe there's a better view or entrance outside, through a window? I could stay here, if you want to check, or find Trisane? Unless you have a better idea.

Ophelia looks to Nik as Aurelia slithers back to her. She whispers, Asta este, dar u?a este blocata. Varisian:
This is it, but the door is blocked. She'll gather the snake, thank her, and place her back in the folds. Once Nik is ready, she'll knock on the door, Hello? Please, we are here to help. If no response: She'll cast a spell, open/close, on the door and see if it will open. The spell will fail if it is locked or being blocked.

Ophelia nods to Nik, I guess so, though I may have another idea. She reaches into the folds of her pocket, Wake up, Aurelia. We're looking for someone and I need your help. She turns towards Nik, Perhaps Aurelia can sneak under the doors for us. Ophelia will describe the girl they are looking for as best as she can and let Aurelia down on the ground. Let's take a look. She can cast speak with animals for reptiles at will as part of her bloodline. Any open doors, we'll peek in, talk to the people inside, if any. Any shut doors, we can have Aurelia sneak in and let us know if anyone is inside before knocking. Does that work?

In response to the conversation about the king: Ophelia's voice grow louder as she responds, It doesn't make sense, not at all. You may be right about that plot, but the fact is that poor girl is in trouble, unless someone steps in to help her. Hopefully, someone here knows about this girl, maybe this will spark some action. She'll then glance around and see if anyone else is taking notice of their conversation. Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

In response to their questions:
I've heard no word on food or supply shipments, sorry. Follow up questions:
Who is Blackjack? What would he be able to do for the city?
Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3
Nice to meet you, I'm Ophelia, this is Besnik and Elden. She pauses a moment, looking to Nik and gives him a slight nod before returning her attention to the Merrilan. My friend here has lost his brother, Tobar, we heard rumor that he has been seen around these parts. We were hoping to find him, or at the least find someone that may know more. I doubt anyone here knows anything about Tobar, unfortunately, but it is a good excuse, and could earn us some sympathy. Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Ophelia smiles at the girl and offers a curtsy back, Hello. She looks to the mother, We don't mean to intrude, we overheard your conversation and have similar fears regarding the Hellknights, and specifically against us... she motions towards herself, Nik, and Elden. Two Varisians and a Dwarf. Might I inquire what this is about? Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

What is this now? Ophelia whispers to the others, maybe there is a back entrance? She'll try to listen in to the conversations to determine what this gathering is about. Rolls: To listen in: Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 To identify the woman or if this is a common thing in the area:

Ophelia nods to the commander, We'll find her, hopefully before anyone else does. She exits with the others. Once outside she says, It may be difficult moving the most wanted person in the city to a safe location. I have an idea, but I'll need to make a stop before we leave. to purchase the scroll That is, if they are going to find her. That was an uncomfortable meeting. Clearly, things have gotten out of hand. What do you think we should do? I don't know if she's innocent or not, but the commander believes she is. We should find her before anyone else does and see what she knows. The commander thinks we should bring her here, but if the Queen is losing faith in the guard, it'll be a matter of time before they come looking here. If the guard is found to be hiding her, that will seal its fate.
Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3
Oh, this is not good, at all. We've heard the rumors, of course, but you believe she may be innocent? Regardless, what do we know about her, beyond her being an artist? Is there anything to indicate she may be dangerous or part of a larger crime group? If there are so many people looking for her, it may be difficult to get her back here unnoticed. You want us to bring her back here or some other place?

I like this guy. Ophelia offers a sincere smile to the man. That was lovely music. It's not often I hear such nice sounds, at least not the parts I usually frequent. Mostly I hear drunken sea shanties. My friend is right, though, perhaps another time I can enjoy your music. assuming whoever is holding the symbol will hand it over

These are my thoughts... It isn't bad to have a challenging encounter, most of our encounters have been handled easily up to this point. I agree with the CR math being skewed, it really depends on a lot of variables, and it isn't easy for GMs to find a good balance between party toughness and encounters without relying on CR. It's a bit more experimental sometimes. For this encounter specifically, what really hurt us where the dice. I'm going to explore what happened, but this is not a criticism on anyone's choices, just my take on things. Poor Elden couldn't hit anything, but when he did, two guys dropped. Trisane had a hard time at first, then stopped attacking altogether to go full defense. That really left our two fighters out of combat. Nik was mostly in a support/healing role, and Ophelia was pecking away at a sniper, but then tried (and failed) to assist Elden. If we had better rolls and could actually hit and damage these guys, I don't think it would have been so bad. As for items and treasure...APs can be odd about those. A lot of the early APs had options for, or expected the GM to fill in xp and treasure with random encounters. I'm not sure if the new version changed that or not. Ophelia has 3 magic items: 2 wands and one potion that were all looted. She doesn't even have half of what a new wand would cost in gp. It seems this AP may be a little stingy in that department, or we're missing things, I'm not sure.
