About Olivert Pythareus - Renheim

background:

Born as the son to the Taldan supreme commander of forces and one of his favored maitresses, Oliver never wanted for anything material in his youth. True, his mother Patricia was from a lesser noble house, but the direct and indirect benefits that came with the alliance to Maxillar Pythareus more than made up for both the cost of raising him and that he was obviously born out of wedlock.

Of course, being the son of an esteemed general once betrothed to Princess Eutropia herself – perfore she broke off the engament and swore never to marry in protect to taldor’s outdated inheritance system – meant expectations for him were high. And that was where the problems started: Olivert was completely unlike his father, taking after his mother in almost every way. From her blond hair and blue eyes, his slender -actually, unusually frail?- but undeniably pretty boy physique rather than his father’s hard and muscular one. Even worse, perhaps, was that the boy was often talking to seeming imaginary friends aloud, leading to rumors of being not mentally well.

The main kicker, however, was his pacifist nature and overall aversion to violence. Tactics of war didn’t interest him much, and he’d rather compose songs than practice with arms. No matter how many times his father tried to teach him, he was simply too frail and too martially untalented. Eventually, wanting a son to join him in the army more than anything, this rift grew steadily wider. His father became more and more focused on his shortcomings, not on his talents as a healer, musician and magician.

How this would have gone on if War didn’t break out, history would never know. As it were, when Taldor invaded neighboring Galt, his mother was assassinated by unknown perpetrators, found poisoned and stabbed in the back several times while paralyzed. Being unable to save his mother was his greatest failing and finding her his darkest moment.

Enraged, and claiming to see the hands of the Galtan Revolution at work, Pythareus pressured then pressured his young son into accompanying him to the front. If not as a commander, than as a supporting member – to avenge Patricia’s death.

And it worked, for a time. As his remorse gave way to hate, he could put aside his reservations for revenge. He grew closer to his father again while they fought together as a unit.

But only for so long.

After a particularly bloody fight and seeing too many horrors of war – many of Galt’s defenders were simple commoners without much equipment or training, and no match for the disciplined phalanx regiments - he returned to his father’s tent.

He couldn’t do this. While some could see things in black and white with the Galtans all as pure evil, and the Taldan’s sole task to remove them from the face of Golarion and resplace them with their own order, he couldn’t.

He’d never forgot that look of disappointment. Of barely restrained fury.

”They killed your mother! Your own mother!”

But he couldn’t.

”Then you are no son of mine!”

He should have left back for Taldor, to his family. The Renheims would probably welcome him back. Perhaps life would be easier now, without his father demanding things of him.

Perhaps that’s what he would have done.

...If he hadn’t wandered too far in shock, and had gotten himself captured by agents of a Demagogue named Borjan, who’d been planning an escape eastward with his followers.

Being a healer, he was too useful to kill. That’s what saved him in the end, probably. Truth be told, part of him felt like he owed it to the commoners; to help them flee through the harsh terrain with either healing or a song, despite the difficulty. It was a atonement of sorts for the warcrimes he’d been indirectly involved in.

But the journey went on and on, and when Borjan was finally killed and what was left of his group was absorbed into the fledging community of Haven, Olivert was mostly relieved, and decided to at least stop by the village to rest and thank the leaders of said town for saving him…

Secrets:

-Oliver has been cursed from a young age by supporters of Princess Eutropia, the political enemy of his father. The idea of the curse was to have his body eat itself, which was partically successful and what keeps him frail and dependant on magic (ant haul) to move around unobstructed. Partially successful in that it also, inexcplicably, serves as a source of magical power. Perhaps what he loses on one end, he is able to use on another. At least, that is his best explanation. Oliver is unaware of who cursed him or when, or perhaps if he is even cursed at all. It might have been kept from him when his magical talent was investigated.

-His musical talent has drawn the attention of both friendly spirits and fey in the past. As such, he is usually accompanied by a combination of either, even if they are invisible most of the time. (The spirit talker archetype along with the pranked curse). The fey like to play tricks on both him and the environment even at the worst of times.

-While Pythareus told Oliver that his mother was killed by Galtans, that might not be necessarily true. It could have been the Lion Blades, also supporters of Eutropia, or in a darkest scenario even Pythareus himself, to set up an excuse to invade Galt, among other options. Whichever is convenient for the campaign?

NPC's that tie to Oliver:

-Mueller Vander: His personal bodyguard, an elite phalanx soldier. Lost contact with him when he was captured. While he appears stern and to constantly push him to take matters more seriously, they have a close friendship underneath the surface.

-His now dead mother and Pythareus, see backstory.

-He has a neice, Ciel Renheim, who is like a sister to him. An up and coming socialite seeking to gain access to true higher class Taldan society, they too had a close bond. However, the last he saw of her was when he left for the Galtan front with his father. She shares his good looks and some of his flirtateous personality.

Appearance and Personality:

Oliver is, at first appearance inside of his suit of armor and shield, a slender yet incredibly handsome young man. Out of his armor, it would become apparent that he is instead skinny and lacking in muscle mass. Though whether someone would notice that past his brilliant smile remains to be seen. His cloak, as a homage to his patron goddess, contains the rainbow spectrum of colours associated with Shelyn. While he carries multiple instruments, he carries no armanents other than a gauntlet and a buckler.

Personality wise, he is usually a friendly and jovial figure, a staunch pacifist who prefers to talk out differences rather than resort to violence. He can be quite flirtatious when he’s in a good mood, and appreciates honesty and directness over empty flattery or excessive decorum.
