Background:
Like many of the Sarini family, Nikolai was born with the talent of entertainment, but unlike the jesters his family was known for, Nikolai had a true gift of singing. A gift the eldest of their family, his great uncle Boris, wants to nurture because he reviles the laughing stock the Sarini have become.
"A house of jesters, 'fools of Thrune', 'lapdogs of hell', we used to be a mighty house with influence! " Nikolai can remember him saying.
Nikolai wants to impress his great uncle and help reclaim the Sarini name of old. Learning all he can from his great uncle in the way of singing and performing for in Egorian court, great uncle Boris has arranged for Nikolai to perform for some old friends of his and to get some experience as a young man away from Egorian.
Nikolai enjoys court, and the subtle manipulations that come with it. He has grown a taste for demented humor, singing songs that mock or satirize lesser houses. Boris fears he is becoming too much like the rest of his family and Nikolai is told to meet a Cimri Staelish, old friend of his great uncle Boris, and she will have work for him...
