Background:

N’gawa was born in K’samata, a small town in the Mwangi Expanse at the edge of the jungles. His father was a powerful hunter and quickly rose to become a well-respected leader in the village. With his family’s position in the town, N’gawa lived a comfortable life. He learned to hunt and quickly found his skills could rival those of his father. While he began hunting birds, he soon moved up to hunting large rodents and reptiles. N’gawa soon learned that the furs and skins of these animals were oftentimes more prized than the carcass itself. He spent time learning how to skin and tan these hides and developed quite a reputation in the town for animal hides. Throughout this, N’gawa dreamed of taking on larger animals. Images of himself hunting down Bears, Crocodiles, and the Great Cats, and then draping himself in their fine furs, drove him ever deeper into the jungles searching for his kills. He began carefully stalking the larger animals, even studying and finding exotic, magical beasts. His father soon began to worry his son would refuse to give up the hunt and would never take his place as a leader of K’samata. So, he devised a plan to catch N’gawa’s attention and bring him back to responsibilities of leadership. A hunter himself, he knew the only thing which could snare his son. He arranged a marriage for N’gawa.

Janil was a beautiful young woman from a neighboring village. Her family owned a large woodcutting business and N’gawa’s father saw them as excellent partners. N’gawa and Janil would be leaders of both their respective peoples, and they had the wit and beauty to do great things. For both families, this was a promise of a lasting prosperity, not just for themselves but for their people. The future would be perfect. The only thing wrong was N’gawa himself.

When N’gawa heard of his father arranging marriage, he was furious. How dare the old man dictate his life? Any interest he had in guiding his people and fulfilling his role in the town disappeared. Though he found Janil beautiful and intelligent, he also saw her and this future life keeping him from the hunt. His dreams of stalking bigger and more powerful prey clashed with the images Janil and his father had for him. He was sure his destiny lay in the wealth and fame of exotic beasts, and not with the mundane dealing of K’samata. Settling disputes, land acquisitions, trade negotiations, and council meetings were no way for N’gawa to spend his best years. Not when there were mystical creatures people had never even seen before waiting for him and his bow. After weeks of argument with the wedding plans slowly grinding forward, N’gawa finally made his decision. He would have to leave his home and seek his dreams elsewhere. In the middle of the night, he snuck away like a thief and headed for Bloodcove to seek a ship to Sargava.

Description:

6’1” 185
As the ship sails out of Bloodcove, you come up on deck to see if the rumors are true. Sure enough a tall, dark skinned Mwangi stands on the deck talking with the first mate, who is tracing out their route on a map. The man wears functional boots, breeches, and an expensive looking shirt, but the most eye-catching thing is a leopard skin draped over one shoulder. He holds an unadorned longbow stave in his left hand. His black hair is braided in the front, but left unbound in the back, reaching past his shoulders.

You catch a passing member of the crew and ask about the newcomer. “Him? He just boarded here in the Mwangi Expanse. Paid to come aboard all the way to Eleder. Some people say he’s a Zenj prince, others say he’s just one with money. He sold nearly three dozen furs and pelts in Bloodcove before coming aboard, about a third of them of some exotic animal and all fetched top dollar. They say he’s headed to Sargava to find even more exotic game and bring back skins of creatures no one has ever seen before.” When you look back up, the first mate is gone, and the Mwangi is standing alone, looking out over the open sea. He calmly pulls a small book out of his pack and begins to leaf through it. You can see pictures of various animal tracks and then others of images of plants and birds. The man’s head lefts and looks at you. He smiles. “My friend, you may join me if you like. My name is N’gawa Matije.”
