The best laugh I had in a game recently was caused by the look on the wizards face when the GM pointed out that the Bad Guy had Protection from Good up - and even though the entire party was Neutral, the Celestial critters the wiz got with his Summon Monster V were not - "oh wait, that means they can't even swing on him at all doesn't it? wow - and I thought that buff spell was useless..."

Meh. Debatable. My only issue with goblin PCs as 2e presents them is that, by every right, they should be uncommon. It's what they're described as being, a marginal sliver of the overall population - short of certain specific places. And the traditional goblin way of life has always felt unnatural, in an interesting way, at least to me.

But that's another discussion entirely.

Alignment auras have rules, and children should not have much in the way of said auras. Even goblin, orc or drow youths, no more so than a chelish kid or whatever other evil culture/race.
If they do, shenanigans are involved.

and with all rules there are exceptions even to these...

What if the gobbo kids actually HAVE 5 levels in assassin (or something) or are a 1st level (or higher) Cleric (or other class that gives an alignment aura) of an evil diety or ... heck something else equally weird?

I don't know, I am neither the GM nor a player in that game and I only have a few lines from a post in a chat board with which to judge it... and I have been playing this game enough to know that it could be anything from a rule mistake (from a timed overworked GM, "oops! my bad, sorry - moving on now"), to a incredibly intricate plot hook for an over-arching Universe SHATTERING HIDDEN STORY ELEMENT... or anything in between. Or even possibly all of the above.

My advice to the Paladin Player? Ask the GM for input. Should it be a "Soul-Searching Moral Dilemma" RP moment for the Paladin? then play it up big with much hair pulling and wailing of the "injustice of it all"! If not, then move on. Maybe drop 1K gp to pick up a Phylactery of Faithfulness next time you get a chance...

NPC - young human girl child with “Guardian Angel”: “Hi! My name is Cody and everyone likes me! ‘Cause my Aunt Abrogail tells them too! She’s my Guardian Angel!”
Cheliaxian Government Official: “Cody? What’s your Aunt Abrogail’s last name?”
Cody: “The Second! Yep, everyone calls her different things, but her name is Abrogail Thrune the Second!” (Big smile!)

Ditto. My suggestion would be to try a different group... as much of a change as you can arrange.

It really seems like the GM is not a good fit (at least for you).

you might want to check out some of the items from the Older Adventurers Armory - here's a few I kind of like...

Glowing Ink (pg.10), Keros Oil (pg.11), Marker Dye (pg.), Bachelor Snuff (pg.17) and Night Tea (pg. 17)

most of these are great for RP... even though they really don't give much mechanical bonuses.

To your next game, bring two lengths of cord (heavy string or heavier, a little over 2 feet long). Have the player tie one end of them the cords to each wrist. Tie the other ends to the players belt, around their back. Have them play like that for the evening...

Or heck, realizing that the Haversack is normally carried on the back and the 'sacks opening is behind a person head, you might just tie a ring of keys to the ends of each of the cords and have the player toss it over their shoulder onto their back (left arm over right shoulder and right over left). Every time the player has a key ring pop over his shoulder a book pops out of the 'sack... Remember that stowing an item draws an AOO...

Be sure to do this in jest. It should be good fun, stop immediately if it feels like they are being picked on...

Well - I saw someone doing some "free actions shenanigans" with the feat Quickdraw and a Quickdraw light shield. With the feat you can don or put away a QD shield as a free action...

so your combat round actions would start by you putting away your QD shield (free action) taking your combat actions, then end with you donning your QD shield again.

Pure Cheese to me, but it seems to work under the rules. The downside is that you cannot use your 2-h hammer to take AOOs... you're down to shield bash attacks?

I'm really proud of my cat character. NOT catfolk, cat.

Mechanically, he's a Courtly Hunter with a leopard animal companion. Taken the Eye for Talent human trait and the huntmaster feat.

Comes on line at level 2.

Mechanically, we have a human with a leopard animal companion who can be transformed into a cat.

But I've totally flipped the flavour. The main character is an intelligent cat (I put the stat boost from Eye for Talent into Intelligence) who has a human servant (you need somebody with opposable thumbs, after all).

With an agile amulet (yes, it takes extra ring slot) the cat is even effective in combat (at level 3 or so). The hunter has high intelligence so the cat has LOTS of skills as well.

Its hilarious in play.

The heck with catfolk, I get to play a CAT

Its even totally PFS legal (well, the reflavouring is strictly speaking illegal but locally I'm not going to find a GM who objects. And if I do the character just becomes an insane loon who is convinced that he is the servant of a sentient cat which IS legal :-) :-)).

The exact same concept can be done with lots of other animals, of course. But I just wanted to play a cat :-) :-) :-)

I know of no other animal this would work as well with.

After all, as the old saying goes:
Dogs have owners, Cats have STAFF.

I ordered this and will be bringing it to the game in a sack. When I do the mission brief I plan on having it as a quasit prop and physically acting out Osprey's abuse of the demon.

I can't wait to see everyone in the store looking at me like I've lost my mind. :D

I read this and figured I had to do something similar. Sadly I did not have a c'thulu, but my goblin plushy did just fine!

Also, starcrossed lovers Graz’ith Ur Maurgith and Ephierone made it back to the Abyss together <3

Goblin Plushy for the win!

Use of the plushy prop really makes the game better! And a squeaky voice for the quasit...

Where did she buy the Belt? on CR#12? or CR#13? ... well, she had it during the adventure that gave her CR#13, so I would think she should have had to have had 13+ Fame BEFORE CR#13... right? But that is not what is reflected on her paperwork. Clearly she bought it on CR#13, so she had to have 13+ Fame on CR#13 - which she had. So everything looks good in the paperwork (even though she spent money she didn't have, for an item she wasn't actually able to own... right?).

To me, the belt was bought on CR#13. The belt could have been purchased DURING the adventure but stead was purchased PRIOR to the beginning of the adventure. To me, there is no difference.

Now are we are adding fame requirements to the discussion? That is not relevant to the recording the expenses.

For me, I make sure I have the fame. The fame problem is present no matter what. I accidentally had my son purchase an item that he didn't have the fame to get. So he spent the money early but was not able to use the item until he got the fame. An honest mistake that was taken care of and moved on.

But lets "Stay on target" here as we fly down this trench.

ok, so - did the PC have the money to pay the bribe or but the (50gp) potion? during the game we check her last CR to see she has over 4K in gold, so yeah, easily has enough... except she actually spent 4K between CR#12 and CR#13 - that isn't recorded until after CR#13 is filled out.

If the item was tracked on CR#12, then that CR would show how much money the PC has available during the adventure...to be spent during the adventure.

But (shrugs) never mind. I'm sure that most people are just going to continue doing what they always have been doing. For me, that is using a large sticky note listing off what I am buying before/during an adventure that I update as I play ("Bribes" might get written down several times) and writing the total cost onto the CR after the Judge signs it. Then when I file it, I stick the note on the back of the CR and slip it into a sheet protector in my PC binder. Yeah, I'm just an old dude here, I still just keep everything as/on the original paper record.

Steven Schopmeyer wrote:
Honest mistakes can be forgiven. Make any adjustments needed to be in compliance and move on.

Yeah. I just realize that if we record the purchase on the first CR then that is where the Fame total that will be checked. If we record it on the CR AFTER... this error will not be caught and will be repeated.

And there are no adjustments needed... according to the paperwork everything appears to be fine.

Steven Schopmeyer wrote:
You just said you made the purchase before chronicle 13. Why did you buy the belt when you didn't have enough Fame in the first place?

this is the most common mistake I have encountered... Not having the Fame required to purchase an item before buying it. And it normally happens with that first Stat Bump item...

So yeah, it's a mistake. But that's the point. It ISN'T clear/obvious/noticeable on the CRs... it appears that the purchase was made when the PC had enough FAME... even though the item was added in early...

Two months ago when I last played the PC maybe I was tired. Maybe this PC is Exchange and has the Boon that allows them to buy something with less fame, maybe it has access from an earlier CR... but the thing is, if I didn't notice it two months ago when I realized I had enough GP to pick up the Belt, it is highly unlikely that I (or anyone else) will notice the error before I play (or after), as the paperwork looks fine. The belt was shows it was bought on CR#13, when the PC had 5903gp and 14 fame...

No. The beginning gold is the ending gold of the prior Chronicle. I just record the new purchases on next (new) Chronicle as gold spent. On my ITS I record the Chronicle number that spent the gold.

Hypothetical situation: My PC has saved up to 4053 gp and wants to buy a Belt of Dex (+2) (first major purchase). so I note that she'll be buying it on this CR (#13), (Having enough money to pick it up). I add it in to her Stats and make the required changes on the character sheet, and two months later actually get to play her again... Now, in the middle of that scenario we encounter other expenses and she kicks in her costs, noting them so that I can mark the expenditure on the CR (#13) when it is issued.

Scenario ends and I mark down my costs as 4000gp (Belt), 50 gp (Bribes), 50 gp (Potion)... so she spent 4100gp - but that's ok, her book keeping totals show that she earned 1853gp which when added to her 4053gp gives her 4053+1853=5903 - 4100 = 1803 gp going into her next scenario (going to be CR#14).

Oh...and she had 12 Fame going on CR#12 and picked up 2 fame on CR#13, so her Fame total was 14 on CR#13 - which is enough to buy the Belt (though she didn't have enough to buy it and the Potion and the Bribes on CR#12).

Where did she buy the Belt? on CR#12? or CR#13? ... well, she had it during the adventure that gave her CR#13, so I would think she should have had to have had 13+ Fame BEFORE CR#13... right? "Dwarves in Purple" - Sort of like Men in Black, only on the Isle of Kortos and cleaning up after the Pathfinders go thru... Adventures like "What about that Fallen Fortress?" or "Second Team into the Dog Pharaoh's Tomb"

"Carrion Hill Two - the Nightmare Continues" - ah... never mind, I'm rather not think about that one...

You listen at the down and get an impressively high number...

GM: You hear muffled chanting.
Player A: Ha! finally! the evil temple awaits!
Players ready weapons and cast buff spells... then swing the door open, only to find a storage room...
Player A: Wait, you said I could hear chanting!
GM: You can still hear faintly the sound of chanting - it appears to be coming from the back wall of the room.
Player B: Wait - is there an air vent in this room?
GM: yeah - in the back wall, next to the floor. It's about 3 inchs square... and might double as a drain.

(eye-roll) Just because someone listens at the door, doesn't mean what they hear is in the other room... and that's not even mentioning Haunts, strange echoes, or weird things like Magic Mouth spells (with the trigger "If someone stops to listen thru this door, announce in a really loud voice 'Alert Alert! Sargent of the Guard! Spy at Post Number 12!'").

Not to say it shouldn't work the way the players expect sometimes - or even at times they don't expect it.

"As you head down the hall, you hear the sound of many booted feet headed your way around the corner ahead..." so... did the PCs roll a Perception check for that?

1) Some way to handle crafted items - for example, currently my Alchemists have adapted one of the "Wand" sheets (that feature just the Wand lines - something like a dozen on the sheet - these are not official, but work great for a PC with lots of wands). I'll note the item, cost per unit of 3 (to craft) and as I make them the upper line of small boxes (usually checked off as the wand is used) is filled in with the CR number that I crafted them on, and the lower line of boxes is filled in as I use them. But those boxes are REALLY SMALL!

2) More lines - for more items bought. There are never enough lines... and after two sheets it get's REALLY hard to track items.

3) Some way to produce an Updated List of what you currently have. Items can easily get lost... and we need to skip lines after each item that can be upgraded, as an "Upgrade Mithril Chain Armor to (+1) can get lost. I found one player who had upgraded his Cloak of Resistance 3 times... each time to (+2). That's ok, he also bought it twice. On the same sheet.

These are a few just on the spur of the moment, I'm sure other people can point out other problems....

Bonus) Don't get me started on the problem of tracking the items twice - once on the CR and again on the ITS. Add in the fact that not everything is listed on the ITS.... grrr.

Dark Archive 5/5

Is there going to be some kind of Inventory Tracking Sheet in the Playtest (and then PFS2e)?
If so, I would like to NOT just drag the old ITS over, but do something better... please?

That would be the most logical way to handle it, but the archetype makes no explicit reference to a Druid's animal companion. Of course, that would make this the only "pet" class/archetype with no option for keeping the pet the same size that it started out as indefinitely.

Yeah - and thus my concern. This would be for a PFS PC, so I can't exactly just "ask my GM" - and realizing that I seem to bring out the worst in many Judges I guess I'll just table this PC idea... or maybe just create one and play them on "Slow" - then "Retire" when the Companion "grows up"... or figure something else out...

I do really like the Art Work though.

Thanks for the reply David.

Would this line from the rules on Druid Animal Companions apply?

"...Instead of taking the listed benefit at 4th or 7th level, you can instead choose to increase the companion's Dexterity and Constitution by 2." ?
Link to Druid.

the line above is the last one in the section under the heading "Animal Choices"...

Edit: part of the problem with this would be the fact that the Homunculus actually has a CON of "--" so how do you add +2 to that?

Dark Archive 5/5

Ok, I really fell for the picture in the book introducing the promethean alchemist - the homunculus is just so CUTE!...

And I realize that the archetype really sucks, to please no need to point out that it's not the best choice for a PC...

But then I noticed that as the PC hits 4th level, the homunculus grows up (size medium...) kind of like the way Animal Companions do... but there is no mention of NOT taking the 4th level advancement.

Is the

4th-Level Advancement:
Size Medium; Speed 30 ft., fly 40 ft. (average); Attack bite (1d6 plus poison), 2 claws (1d6); Ability Scores Str +4, Dex -2; Special Attacks poison (bite-injury frequency 1/minute for 60 minutes, effect sleep for 1 minute, cure 1 save, Con-based DC with a +2 racial bonus).
wait... it gets a Poison bite, with " Con-based DC with a +2 racial bonus", but has a "CON --"...wha..?
required? or is there some way of avoiding it? (I guess I could always just switch off to leveling in a different PC Class - and then maybe a Prestige Class?)

anyway - any way to avoid the Size Increase for the homunculus?

I'm sure there's a ranger archetype somewhere that swaps your favoured enemy to being an organisation rather than a race. Probably in Ultimate Intrigue.

you are likely thinking of Guildbreaker (Ultimate Intrigue pg. 41)...

Favored Organization (Ex): When a guildbreaker selects a favored enemy, he can opt to select a specific organization, such as a particular thieves’ guild, in lieu of a specific creature type. The guildbreaker must select this option for his first favored enemy, but he can choose either option for his later favored enemies. This ability only applies if the guildbreaker knows that the target is a member of the organization.
