"Thank you for resolving this mess. But look at the time, you no doubt want to head back to bed. If one of you will help me get this beast of a man into another room where I can secure him until the constabulary arrive I will leave you be for the night."

"Oh dear. It seems I am to blame for all this trouble. I must be more careful when others may be listening. Can't trust the patrons in my own inn. What is this world coming to?"

Sonod nods, thinking it through.

"Possible. Or they came up together but set up the window escape route in case they needed to leave quickly." He chuckles morbidly to himself. "I guess they didn't leave quickly enough huh?"

"Well, it's all the same in the end I guess. Anyways, yes, of course you can use the smelling salts. It's what I sent you down there for! 'Course, I don't think you will need more than one of those things. A whiff from one vial could wake up my old gram, and she's been dead these 10 years."

Sonod blanches at the implication of mortal harm.

"So footpads broke in, tried to steal from you, and when I heard the noise I came to investigate, finding that you had defended yourselves and handled the situation. I don't know how the snuck in so quietly. Or why they targeted you.

I think I can manage that. Oh dear. I think I need a drink."

Sonod, the Proprietor

"Um, yes...they did sit together I think. There was a third one with them, but I hadn't seen any of them before. Not too uncommon, I have been experiencing some fortune in business lately, if I do say so myself." His gaze falls back to the dead body. "Although, perhaps not so fortunate as I thought.

Anyways, I did not get a very good look at them. Not to describe the third one at least. Tall? But everyone is tall to me. Dark hair I think?

No, no one knew about my arrangement with Jacob for the evening. Well...except...I guess I wasn't very quiet about it downstairs when I realized who you were was I? With the fanfare, and the wine. Perhaps they realized that you are....

Fenlin, you manage to activate the Wand of Silence, and stillness falls over the room. Sonod's lips continue to move for a few moments before he seems to realize that he can't hear himself anymore. His eyes widen in unfeigned terror as he first grasps his throat, and then his ears, panicked at what has befallen him. About 20 seconds later..."...'M DEAF!!! I'VE GONE...oh, it's gone now...what was that?!?!"

You are holding a Wand of Silence. Judging by the duration it seems to be minimum caster level (3), giving 3 rounds of duration. You have no way of knowing how many charges remain.

Sonod, the Proprietor
EDIT: Wrong NPC - Woops. :D

"Oh dear me. None of my patrons have ever been attacked before. This will be my doom for sure. Word will spread. No one will ever come to my establishment again."

Sonod appears to be on the edge of tears. He is certainly more frantic than you would expect, but when you consider that the most violence he generally sees is a brawl between drunken patrons, this all may be a little much.

"Speak with him...well, it doesn't look like he will be doing much talking. You certainly did a number on both of these reprobates. But maybe I can help with that. It's the least I can do. I have something downstairs..."

With a grunt Sonod tries to rise from the couch, but seems struck by a bout of dizziness and falls back to the couch with a plumph.

"Hmm...maybe I should stay here for a moment. One of you can go though. In the pantry in the kitchen there is a jar with vials of smelling salts. Bring one of those up here and you'll have him talking in no time."

Sonod, the Proprietor

Thhhppt...What the! A fine how do you...

Sonod sits straight up on the couch, his eyes immediately going to the dead man lying in the corner.

"What in the blazes happened here? I come up to investigate a ruccus and find two dead men in the rooms?! These were both customers downstairs, but I saw them leave hours ago...how did they get up here?"

The unconscious brigand that you pulled back from the brink of death groans in pain as he sleeps.

"Oh, well one dead man then..." Sonod says in surprise. "By the shearer's sheep, what happened? Do I need to have someone run down to the constabulary to send someone over?"

Sonod

"Oh...oh my."

As you look up from the dying man that you are trying to render first aid to, you see Sonod standing in the hallway. Palor once again draining from his face.

"I heard some kind of rucus, so I roused myself from my bed and came to investigate. Did they...? And you...? Should I...?"

You see Sonod's wide eyes dart around the room. Seeing the one man with a large gash in his skull, and another bleeding out onto the floor and bearskin rug, it appears to be too much for the tall halfling.

"I...I think I should sit..."He takes a step forward, moving towards the bed, but his constitution seems to fail him, and he faints, crumpling to the floor in much the same way that your assailants did.

Sonod, the Proprieter

"Oh, of course my lady. If you will follow me."

Sonod turns to the young gnome. "Murta, tell Daveen that I am showing our guests up to the suite. He is responsible for the common room until I get back. Oh, and have someone bring all of this up to the room."

She nods and darts back into the kitchen. Sonod watches her leave with a fatherly smile.

"Sweet girl. Never says a word, and seems a little touched at times, but a hard worker.

Now then, lets get you out of this racket and up to the peace and privacy of your rooms."

Sonod takes you to the back wall. On the north side of the fire place there is a staircase leading up, while just opposite that there is another that leads down. Taking you up the northern staircase he leads you to the 2nd floor of the Heroes' Purse.

Fenlin, as you climb the stairs you look back over your shoulder and notice that the hooded figure at the table that was near yours is following you with his eyes again. He had indicated that he did not mean to pry before, but it seems that was just because you had caught him in the act. This time he does not seem to notice that you have seen him watching your group.

The rumble of mixed conversations falls to a distant babble as you climb the stairs, surprised at the amount of sound proofing between the two floors.

"Your rooms are at the far south end of the hall here, with a view of the street in front. And quick access to the outside should you desire."

He leads you down a southern hallway with doors on either side. At the end the hall turns to the right and there is a door in front of you and one two the left.

"Both of these rooms here are yours. For privacy sake I will make this door here," pointing to the door on the left, inaccessible from the outside."

Sonod places his hand against the wall and mutters a word softly. "murus". There is a faint glow, and a brick wall appears where the door was. It is hard to detect, even knowing what to look for, but if you look closely you can see the seam where the door would swing out if opened from the inside.

"We had a Lord Magi stay here once, decades ago. He insisted on having these rooms and privacy. He was the one that enchanted both of the doors, and the walls on the inside, to be...customizeable you might say. I am the only one that knows the pass phrases. In fact, most of the staff thinks that the walls changing is a sign that this end of the building is haunted by something dark and malevolent. That helps the privacy more than anything else."

Sonod opens the door in front of you and ushers your group into a grand bedroom. Easily the size of some small homes, it is layered with carpets, pillows, and linens all on a theme of dark and soothing purples, matching Sonod's attire.

He strides confidently into the room, and going to the North-east corner, presses his hand against the wall that would adjoin this room with the one he just blocked off outside. "ostium" There is another shimmering light, and a door appears where there was not one before.

"The phrase 'ostium descendus' will create a door to the outside here," indicating the window in the middle of the eastern wall of the room, "and a staircase down into the street. I try to avoid using that one during daylight or when prying eyes might see, but if you have need for it please feel free.

Now, I feel like I have been in your Lord and Ladyships hair enough for one evening. Should you need anything just find anyone in a purple coat and let them know, they will see to it. Your meal should be up shortly. Please have a comfortable evening."

With that Sonod makes his way towards the door, heading back into the main area of the inn.

He is on his way out, but doesn't have to be gone yet if anyone wants to say anything or ask him something. Players choice.

"Oh dear me no. I am not nearly in the Lord Gransby's circles. I am childhood friends with his butler..."

Finally making the connection of what mentioning that name means, Sonod's face blanches, and he begins to stutter and wring his hands. Turning to Titania, he blubbers.

"Oh dear...oh dear me. My greatest apologies my lady. Asking a friend of Lord Gransby to sing for a meal like a common wastrel. Your room and dining were already paid for. Oh I am mortified. I should have known. I should have realized. "

He seems in quite the state as he considers how to extricate himself to this apperently embarrassing situation. Turning to the kitchen he shouts.

"Murta! Open the bottle of Fire Slyf Wine. The '74. Get glasses for our esteemed guests! Quickly now!"

Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (nobility) to recall details of the vintage.

A diminutive gnomish serving girl peeks from the corner of the doorway before scurrying away to follow the directive.

"Please forgive me. If there is anything I can do to make up for the shameful way I treated your lords and ladyships please just ask."

Sonod, the Proprieter

His eyes sparkle with amusement as he responds to Aran.

"Ho ho, you misunderstand me my friend. My arrangement with you beautiful songstress here was to 'sing for her supper' as she put it. She did a wonderful job and I am more than happy to keep my end of the deal. But room did not come into the discussion."

He chuckles again to himself.

"Now let's see. I have enough space open for you in the common sleeping area, if you have no mind for privacy. Those are 5 copper a bed. If you would like a more private arrangment though I have single occupancy rooms for 1 gold each, or double occupancy for 15 silver. I think I have enough of each.

Normally I would offer a group such as yours my master suites. Both would fit you quite comfortably, and I offer a set discount. Unfortunately I have them promised to a friend who is sending some new business associates my way to stay the night before they set out on some trip or other tomorrow. Well, no point worrying about what cannot be. Will it be common for you all or a double for the ladies and singles for the gentlemen? How would you like to make your evenings arrangments? I can have one of the maids ensure the rooms are ready."

Sonod, the Proprieter

Hmm, well, my regular entertainment said they would not be able to make it tonight. Something about a dulcimer with broken strings. Not many people to entertain, besides yourselves...but I'll tell you what, if you can double my patronage in the next hour, I will have the the kitchen whip up something for you and your friends here.

In game mechanics you are being offered the opportunity to take part in a skill encounter. Bring 11 patrons to the bar in the next hour by the power of your singing (and perhaps a little "marketing" on the part of the rest of the party) and you will receive a reward.

Sonod, The Proprieter

Come in and seat yourselves wherever. I will be with you in a moment.
