About Mortimer Shadowcloak

Mortimer Shadowcloak (as he likes to introduce himself) is a quiet type who, despite being a perfectly healthy young man, is often mistaken for being sick: his skin never seems to lose its pallid complexion, and his gaunt features and sunken-in brown eyes suggest a deadly illness eating at him from within, but all clerics assure him that it is not the case.

Born in Nidal, Mortimer had to flee his homeland in his early 20s after running afoul of Zol-Kuthon's priesthood for refusing to worship the Dark Prince. Sickened by the depravity of the priests and their divine patron, but deeply fascinated by the Shadow Plane, Mortimer became convinced that it was the Midnight Lord's presence that corrupted and tainted a once beautiful realm. Since escaping Nidal, Mortimer came to venerate Norgorber, the divine patron of secrets and spies, rationalizing that the Reaper of Reputation, at least, has been human in the past.

Mortimer joined the Pathfinder Society after hearing about the Dark Archive. Despite having no magical talent, he intends to search it for a means of cleansing Zol-Kuthon's taint from the Shadow Plane and restoring the "Pure Shadow" he strongly believes in. The Chelish agents of the Paracountess look favorably upon the Nidalese, although he is wary of the possibility of them handing him over to Pangolais if they ever learn of his past. After a dragon-slaying (mis)adventure in Taldor, Mortimer had a brief but turbulent romance with a roguish shae named Maffei. Their relationship didn't last but as a parting gift, the shae taught him to call upon the Shadow Plane's power to aid him in his future travels.
