Though Morgan Wills is a native of the district of Cresent Harbor in Port Peril, he has yet to set foot on a boat that has traveled further than the coast of Port Peril. Born from the union of a down on his luck pirate named Runor Wills and a barmaid for one of the many alehouses that dotted Port Peril's streets, Morgan was a man familiar with the pirate's life though not yet of it. As a child, he made his living diving for the clams and mollusks that populated the waters around the coast that ran along the port side boundary of Port Peril, which he would sell to earn his coin. While working, he would often marvel at Lucrehold, the seat of power of the Hurricane King. When looking towards the King’s fort, he would often wonder if he would ever be able to call such a place home. What coin Morgan could spare, he would spend frequenting the taverns of Crescent Harbor and Scrimshaw, listening to the shanties, tales and limericks left by passing sailors and pirates.
As he grew, he began reciting the tales and limericks he learned as a child, which he used to make some extra coin and learn more tales from the occasional grateful patron. Before he was 17 years of age, Morgan had learned much about the local going-ons of the Port. However, spending time in the alehouses of Port Peril is a dangerous affair. Morgan was often caught up in many of the fights that would break out. One such fight cost Toliver Wigs, Morgan’s closest friend, his life. That day left scars on Morgan, and he has worn his friend’s battered tricorn hat ever since. Not wanting to end up like his friend, who had Morgan’s conscience during his early years, Morgan decided that if he was to die, he would die rich and living the tales he had often told, but never experienced. If he was to do that however, he would need to gain the respect of those around him, and there is only one way to gain the respect of a city full of pirates. He just needed to find the right opportunity.
In Port Peril, those in the know can often pick out the right opportunity. Morgan’s right opportunity was a man named Durston Giles, one of the Hurricane King’s lackies. Though the Hurricane King likely didn’t even know the man’s name, Durston was Captain on one of the King’s smaller ships. Visiting Durston’s favorite watering holes, Morgan began ingratiating himself to the man through drink and song. One such night, Morgan found himself at the Formidably Maid, caught up in limerickry with several other patrons. He was about to belt out a limerick about a man who drank some spiked rum. Before he was able to finish, however, he felt the walls close in around him as he slipped into unconsciousness.
