![]() A gaunt figure gets up from a corner table where he sits in the shadows and lithely navigates the patrons and tables and arrives at the bar. His skin is pale, his eyes slightly bloodshot and he commands the gaze of the barkeep who looks at him nervously. "what'll it be, Chills?" the barkeep asks with a slight trepidation, but steady and bold. "A glass of red wine and a bit of raw liver if your cook can spare it", Chills replies, looking around to see if anyone noticed his odd request. "Uh, yeah, the wine's coming right up, but I'll have to check with the kitchen for your... special request", says the barkeep. "Have the new waitress bring it over", nodding at a rather fanciful girl, "I'll be at my table." and Chills drops several silvers on the bar. Chills then returns to his table, again with an unnatural grace, where he sits alone, his gaze fixated on the new girl. The barkeep whispers to a patron, "I can't wait for the Wind Reaper to be off, that guy gives me the creeps" and Chills looks over and the barkeep smiles nervously and quickly heads to the kitchen. ![]()
![]() Oleg Volchenko
Background: Oleg was raised in Grayce (a small town bordering Lastwall).
His father Pavel was a farmer who drowned in a boating accident on the river Path. Oleg and his many brothers and sisters were split up and sent to various orphanages and relatives. As fortune would have it, Oleg was sent to the orphanage run by the local Church of Iomedae. He was amazed at the stories of Iomedae growing up and later he took up the mantle as a servant in her honour. While on an errand as a new initiate, his group was set upon by a force sent from the Garden of Lead. It was his first encounter with unliving foes and the experience was frightening, a fiery spectre leading flaming skeletons. Oleg fought and defeated three of the skeletons and turned just as the spectre struck down his mentor. The spectre sneered at Oleg before moving to engage him. Raising its ghastly sword it swung at him. Oleg managed to call upon the aid of Iomedae to strike it down, thrusting his sword into it even as it struck him in return. Everything went black. Other servants of Iomedae brought Oleg back to the Church in Grayce, where Oleg almost turned into a spectre himself, if not for their prayers and magic. This is where Oleg first met Professor Lorrimor. The professor wanted to know details about the spectre that Oleg had fought and slain. Oleg kept in touch with the professor, corresponding with him over the ensuing months until his death. Freshly recovered, Oleg traveled to Ravengro to attend the professor's funeral service. The professor had mentioned that he was investigating a mysterious cabal and en route Oleg wondered if the professor had met his end by them. There are sinister forces at work in Ustalav and Oleg will find the truth one way or another. Personality: Oleg is gallant and courageous. His encounter with the force from the Garden of Lead traumatized him. He lost his mentor and his dreams were dark as his soul wavered in the realm between dark and light. His optimism is returning, but he still greaves, the wounds haven't fully healed. He wants to distract himself from it by making certain the Professor didn't come to an untimely end and focuses on that task. He's also motivated to find some of his other brothers and sisters. Description: Oleg stands 5'10" and weighs about 190 lbs. He's well toned and in good health. He wears a chain shirt and wields a long sword and light steel shield. His thoughts and his expression are dour, porting the weight of his recent experiences. A smile is quick to appear when warranted. He has no scars, but his left arm is slightly marred where the spectre struck him, a remnant of its negative energy. Crunch: OLEG VOLCHENKO

![]() GM: How much does Oleg feel overshadowed by his grandfather and his exploits in the revolution?
He's proud of his grandfather's deeds, but he feels shackled by the prejudice of others. If he does what they expect, it's because of his blood (not his effort), inversely, if he doesn't do what they expect, they wonder what's wrong with him (Why isn't he like his grandfather?). He feels pigeon-holed. He hasn't come to accept yet that they'll believe what they believe regardless of what he does or doesn't do. Mind you, he hasn't consciously recognized that there are certain benefits from the goodwill engendered by his grandfather's acts, though he is keenly aware of the enemies his grandfather made. Does Oleg truly enjoy what he does?
or is part of his current persona either a rebellious streak (the rabble-rousing)?
or an attempt to emulate, or even surpass, his grandfather’s achievements and fame?

Background: Living in the shadow of one's grandfather can be difficult, but when your grandfather was one of the organizers behind the bloodless revolt that formed the Palatinates, one's family name makes you a hero to many and a villain to a few. Oleg's grandfather Piotr Volchenko made many enemies in the aristocracy, particularly the members of the Beauturne family. These enemies have appeared from time to time causing trouble, but it hasn't stopped Oleg from carrying on the tradition as hero to the people, and he is well-known in Courtaud for his rabble-rousing.
Professor Lorrimor was teaching at Lepidstadt University while Oleg attended and that was where the two initially crossed paths. The Professor taught history and Oleg was the star pupil regaling the others with stories of the revolt from his grandfather. Oleg spent one summer with Petros on an investigation of some ruins inside the borders of the Worldwound and the experience changed him. He decided that the adventuring life was for him. Once his studies were complete at Lepidstadt, Oleg signed on to an expedition (without the Professor), this time in the ruins of Adorak. Three months into the expedition, Oleg received news of the Professor's death and he left for Ravengro to attend the funeral and pay his respects. Crunch: OLEG VOLCHENKO
