Background:
Menviol spent two months in a wizardry college before dropping out after failing all the tests. Next he entered the Church of the Silver Flame. He was pious but not chaste. Perhaps if he had continued to bed maidens, he might have eventually become a cleric, with a small number of bastards to his name. Instead, he was caught with a local lord’s wife. The husband branded him with a poker across the left cheek. As Menviol made his escape from the mansion, he was shot between the legs by a guard with a crossbow. He’s not sure if he can have any children now. He was banished from the Church, and his family sent him to Stormreach to evade the scandals he had caused.
At first, he carried a gnome’s palanquin for five months before he was fired for being too frightening to the gnome’s daughter. Then he spent many months in a drunken stupor. One summer day as he lied under a tree, he saw a butterfly. It touched something inside him that he didn’t quite understand. He followed it as best he could but lost it when it crossed the river. This moment of pure beauty changed his life. He wanted to see more butterflies. He began exploring the area looking for them. His health improved. He became more focused and social. Stormreach became his home.
For the last six years Menviol has lived in Stormreach. Now, he does odd jobs for fellow Brelish expatriates in the Sloth district, preaches in Temple Row giving prayers to any of the Sovereign Host and the Traveler, fishes from the bridges in Oldgate and the Harbor, hunts to the north of the city, attempts to find adventurer clients in Forelight needing a local guide, and fights with a friend at the Red Ring when they really need money.
He is known for collecting butterflies. Some of the city’s naturalists use him to expand their own collections. He’s also written many articles about butterflies; their distribution, diet, and physical description that are published in small journals on Khorvaire. He discovered a species of butterfly and named it Menviol’s Metalmark. Some of the children call him Butterfly Man since he seems to attract butterflies as he strolls about Stormreach. Wearing a hat crowned with flowers certainly helps.
Description:
Noticeable right away is the line of scar tissue across the left side of his face, running from his temple to the edge of his mouth. Smiling is difficult. His dark long hair is braided. A short brim hat with flowers in it; thin green and black stripes run diagonally across his shirt; brown trousers; leather boots that are well shined in Stormreach. leather armor, a steel shield, a net, a heavy mace, and a machete.
