Backstory:

Meerko Riverwyrm is no stranger to disappointment. His impressive physical gifts fast-tracked him to become cheif of the Riverwyrm Tribe at the soft-scaled age of 14. However Meerko had not counted on the rival Reedborn Clan using his coronation feast to stage a brutal attack. Perhaps overly committed to their revelry, the Riverwyrm's were completely scattered to the currents while Meerko himself was captured and made a slave. No matter how briefly he had actually held the position, the Reedborn Chief took special delight in humiliating the formerly rival chieftain. When not being beaten or mocked by the cheif, Meerko served as slave to the elderly Reedborn's witch doctor. It was deemed amusing to see, certainly the strongest kobold either Reedborn or Riverwyrm had ever produced consumed with measuring ingredients and leading an old wyrmling with a bad knee around rather than mining or any other task where his muscle might actually be of use.

The following three years were long and miserable but unfortunately for the Reedborn, Meerko's mind proved as capable as the rest of him. During his time working for the Witch Doctor, he absorbed far more knowledge of alchemy than anyone would have guessed. His captors were enlightened however, the fateful day when Meerko set off an explosion that not only destroyed the old shaman's lab and him along with it but blew a hole clean through to the lake bottom the Reedborn resided under. As the Reedborn warrens flooded, it was through this hole that Meerko made his escape. With no home to return to and hunted by the Reedborn, Meerko fled the tangled jungle known as the Mwangi Expanse, making the long journey to the coast along the banks of the Vanji River. As he traveled, Meerko continued to experiment with the reagents he had stolen in his escape, finding that the strange ingredients could be harnessed to bring forth more of the Draconic might he had always known lie just beneath his scaled breast.

After nearly two months travel, alone, through perilous jungle, Meerko found himself in Bloodcove. The Aspis controlled, pirate port was a true shock to the kobold's tribal sensibilities. Surrounded by towering bodies and with no money to speak of, those first few days were not kind to Meerko. He was however able to discern that of those with money, most had earned it on the seas. Pirate life called to Meerko in the most pleasant fashion as it was much like the raiding life he had been raised in, only here there were Captains, rather than Chiefs. In no time at all he was signed to Waveripper, a small pirate ship with a piss-poor reputation but a reputation none the less. Again though, opportunity soured on Meerko and he found his time aboard Waveripper more frustrating than anything. While it was hard not respect his swing with a weapon, the rest of the crew found the Kobold far too weird, even for a pirate's tastes. His odd experiments and bizarre habits quickly relegated him to little more than a sideshow among his crew-mates. Their scorn reminded him far too much of his time with the Reedborn and Meerko quickly became angry and violent. After a spiteful bomb scorched off half the first mate's beard, Meerko found himself cut loose on the docks of Port Perril. Seething with anger, he made his way to the Formidably Maid to drown his sorrows and plan his next move...
