About Matthias The Long Whisker

In a monarchy, when the nobles are good and kind, the nation prospers. But if they are lazy or corrupt or cruel, the nation and the people suffers. None know this better than Yoshiro, a Kitsune from the land of Minkai.

When he was a boy, Yoshiro grew up in a tiny village that was far from the hustle and bustle of the city. His parents were musicians and they trained him in the profession. Life was good for the Hama-Kitsune and they spent their days making a fine living by playing old folk songs for the happy people of their tiny country.

Then came the Daimyo’s son, a noble wastrel who came to the village after his father exiled him from their palace. The boy and his thugs came to the village to “collect taxes”, in reality they were simply skimming off the top of their father’s collections so they could spend the money on their drinking and carousing.

During one of their “collections”, the soldiers accidentally burned down the inn where Yoshiro’s family was staying. Only Yoshiro escaped with his life and before the soldiers could kill him for witnessing their crime, he escaped into the woods.

Many years later, the old Daimyo died and his son took over his position. He was a terrible blight upon the land and his taxes were too high for the average person to eat. One night a travelling bard came to his castle and played a rousing tune on his shamisen. As the music lulled the Daimyo and his courtiers to sleep, the bard quietly slew the Daimyo.

This was Yoshiro who began a one man crusade against unjust or incompetent nobility. He travelled the land of Minkai, slaying men who failed in their duties to protect the people.

One night Yoshiro bit off more than he could chew and targeted an associate of the Sovereign Court. When the Pathfinder Agent who had recruited the local Sovereign Court members found Yoshiro he should have been furious. The young Kitsune had killed several assets to the Court, killed Yoshiro was the only possible outcome at this point.

Yet the Pathfinder Agent spared him. Yoshiro’s goal, to remove bad leaders from power, is a key part of the Court’s own agenda and the men he’d killed were hardly high level resources.

Instead of retribution, the Pathfinder offered Yoshiro a job: a place in the Pathfinder Society and also a place in the Sovereign Court.

Yoshiro accepted. After all it was better than getting killed.
