I'm thinking of a Human (Taldan) Daring Champion Cavalier (Order of the Lion). He's more of an outlier in Taldan society spending more time with the common folk than the nobility but still quite deadly with his rapier.

It's been a couple of bad weeks between the passing of my brother from another mother and on Monday, while replacing a broken refrigerator, I managed to throw my back out (getting old is not for the weak) I, somehow, managed to survive and will kick this game off tomorrow.

But now, the moment you've been waiting for. The four finalists are:
St. John Smythe
Robert Merosett
Nico Sabinus
and
Gione Sullus

To everyone else, thank you for the time and effort of making your submissions and for making it difficult for me to narrow it down to the final four. I do hope that you and your characters will make it into a game soon.

Thank you all,
Mike.

Dark Archive

Okay, everyone. I'm going to close recruitment now. I'm going to spend the weekend going over the last few submissions and will post the new party on Sunday

I hope everyone who celebrates had a happy, and safe, Fourth of July and that you ended the day with the same number of fingers and toes you started it with.

For those of you wondering about what I meant on "a case by case basis"
I tend to be biased toward the Core races but I don't want to stifle anyone's creativity, so if I were to choose a non-standard race I would choose only one such character. Please go ahead and submit what you want but just keep that in mind, that you may be restricting your chances for selection.

Dark Archive

Everyone thank you for your understanding. Despite the difficulties of the past week I fully intend to run this, as promised. But given the situation I'm going to extend the recruitment deadline out to the end of next week.

The new recruitment deadline will be Friday, July 10th @ 6:00 p.m. CDT.

That will give me the time to go over everyone's submissions and choose the party.

Thank you everyone while I go through this difficult time.

Let me explain my silence. My best friend of over 40 years suffered a major heart attack last week and "died" on the scene, First Responder's were able revive him and transport him to the hospital. While in the ER he suffered another heart attack and "died" again, Doctor's were able to resuscitate him again but unfortunately his brain had been without oxygen for almost an hour.

While his brain stem showed activity, keeping his heart and lungs beating, there was no activity in any other part of his brain, leaving him brain dead. Saturday his wife ordered hospice care to keep him comfortable while waiting for the inevitable.

Yesterday morning he passed away as his heart finally stopped beating. Fortunately for his wife he didn't linger for months or possibly years in a vegetative state and his passing was peaceful.

To say that his passing is devastating is an understatement as he was more of a brother of mine than my own brother and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

That being said, I'm overwhelmed by the interest everyone has shown in this recruitment and will spend the next couple of days going over everyone's submissions and sending out notes as I go.

Again, I thank you for your patience.
Mike

As promised here is the recruitment thread for the winner of the "Which Adventure Path Should I Run Next" survey.

I'm looking for four players (15 point buy) to save the Empire of Taldor from itself. I'm primarily looking for a well rounded party consisting of the four basic food groups (arcane, divine, melee, and skill) that will play well together.

I will keep recruitment open until 6:00 p.m. CDT Monday July 6th.

Races: All standard races from the Pathfinder Core Rulebook will be allowed. Any other PC race will be considered on a case by case basis.
Classes: All classes from any Paizo publication will be allowed as well as any archetype for those classes. Classes may be of the Original or the Unchained version except for the Summoner, which must be the Unchained version of the class.
Alignments: Characters can be of any Good or Neutral alignment. No evil alignments will be allowed.
Abilities: Characters will be based on the Standard Fantasy (15 point) buy, found in the PFRPG Core Rulebook on page 16. No ability can be raised higher than 18 (prior to racial modifiers). Only one ability may be lowered below 10 and that ability cannot be lowered below 8 (prior to racial modifiers).
Skills: We will be using the background skills system
Feats: Any feat from any Paizo publication will be acceptable.
Traits: Character's will start with two traits, one of which be from the War for the Crown Player’s Guide. NO drawbacks for a third trait will be allowed.
Hit Points: Characters will start out with Maximum hit points for their class at 1st level. Thereafter characters will roll for their hit points (or accept ½ hit die+1) whichever is greater.
Starting Gold: Characters will roll for their starting gold (or accept the average for their class) whichever is greater.
Character Death: While I will not go out of my way to kill anyone I do fight my creatures intelligently so sometimes things happen. To that end a character is not considered dead until his hit points reach a negative score equal to or greater than his Constitution score plus his level.
Posting Rate: I know some GM's like a posting rate of at least once a day, fortunately I'm not like most GM's. I understand that RL gets in the way and you can't always post every single day. As long as the story continues to flow I'm good with whatever rate you can muster. That being said any radio silence of more than a week (unless otherwise pre-arranged) will cause me to send a PM to see if everything is okay. Continued silence after that may cause me to boot you from the game and seek a replacement player.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Looks like we're going to War!!!

Looks like I'm going to need to brush up on War for the Crown.

With just under 24 hours left (I'm going to close the survey at 6:00 pm CDT) we have War for the Crown in the lead with 40 votes, followed by Ironfang Invasion at at 33 votes, and Skull & Shackles at 31 with Hell's Rebels close behind at 29.

Trailing the pack we have Reign of Winter (11), Giantslayer (10), Rise of the Runelords (7), and last but not least Shattered Star (4).

Thank you all for taking the time to make your voice heard and I hope you've enjoyed the updates.

Dark Archive

Okay everyone, the moment you've been waiting for. It's been a tough decision to make and the group was evenly split between two characters so I had to make the call.
So to that end I think we're going to go with Damien Keyes as our new player.
Thank you everybody for taking the time to submit your characters and concepts and I hope you all can find a game for them soon.

With a little over five days remaining and a 118 responses so far we have War for the Crown still in the lead with 33 votes, Skull & Shackles and Ironfang Invasion are currently tied for second at 26 votes each, with Hell's Rebels in, technically, 3rd at 23 votes.
Shattered Star gets a little loving perhaps a little too late with 4 votes.

Not a problem. I'm running a little late myself.

Okay, everyone. I'm cutting off any new submissions at this time. I want to get some feedback from the others in the party before I decide on the new player. Given the vagaries of PbP this might be a little while. If I haven't heard from everyone in the group by Sunday night I'll either go with the majority or make a GM decision then.

Dark Archive

It doesnt have to be a full blown character, just give me some idea of where you're coming from and where you intend to go with your character.

Dark Archive

DC is just a part of Warner (much like WotC is to Hasbro) that they may not notice, or care, what her self anointed title may be. DC on the other hand should speak up about it.

Personally I think I'm done with this hot mess.

Dark Archive

Closing in on 100 responses and counting. No change to the leader board to announce War for the Crown is still in first place, followed by Hell's Rebels and Skull & Shackles respectively.

I know I asked for the top three choices from each of you and it looks like some of you got a little carried away. Four or five, okay you got a little overenthusiastic. But, to those of you selecting eight or nine (and especially to the one of you voted for 14) seriously?

Dark Archive

We recently had the Cleric of our game drop out for RL issues and I am now looking for someone to replace her. Since the game is ongoing I'm only going to keep the recruitment open until Friday, June 19th at 6 o'clock CDT.

The original recruitment thread can be found here: Curse of the Crimson Throne Hardcover Edition recruitment. Since the other characters are still 1st level the character creations rules still apply, with one exception. Since Lamm is now dead a character does not need to take a Campaign trait if they do not wish to and can replace it with another trait.

The party currently consists of an Elf Cartomancer Witch, a Human Empiricist Investigator, and a Human Flamewarden Ranger.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you for your regard.

With day #2 coming to a close (at least for me) we still have War for the Crown in first place (22), Hell's Rebels has moved up to second (18) and Skull & Shackles surged into third (16) and finally, thanks to Black Dow, some love for Shattered Star (1).

Thanks everyone who's voted so far and keep 'em coming.

A just wish they would recast the part without any unnecessary explanation. We all know the reason.

Have you thought about what sort of CharGen rules you might like to use for whichever AP is picked?

I'm going to hew as close to the intended rules as possible (i.e. 4 characters, 15 point buy, etc...) with a few exceptions (Unchained classes, background skills) thrown in. If you look at my CotCT recruitment it will pretty much be the same format.

Dark Archive

Can everybody see the results so far or is that something only I can see since I set up the poll?

Right now we have War for the Crown in the lead (11), with Ironfang Invasion (9) and Hell's Rebels (8) close behind. Absolutely no love for Shattered Star (0) yet.

Please note: Should the winner be the perennial favorite, Kingmaker, I will be delaying that until after the 10th anniversary content is released and will go with the first runner up before launching KM.
(So it's a dirty way to get me to run two AP's).

Batwoman Will Not Recast Kate Kane in Wake of Ruby Rose's Exit; New Character Eyed to Lead Series

Dark Archive

I'm going to submit Marik, am idealistic Diviner Wizard whose been haunted by a recurring dream of his future.
He's currently built on a 20 point buy which I'll adjust when I get home this afternoon.

Just a quick question GM Kulko, how do you feel about Background Skills? They're a way for characters to spend skill points on skills they wouldn't ordinarily do so.

Stop it, stop it. The horse is dead

Each person view of the show, being subjective, is going to be different. Yes, sure the show was rating bombed before it even aired because some people took offense to the LGTBQ nature of the hero. Others flat out didn't like it.
Personally I'd give it a C- rating. Perhaps Ms. Rose's injury and dissatisfaction with the show showed through, but it did seem to be getting better as it progressed. With a chance to recast the lead the CW can hopefully find someone who can embrace the role and have some fun with it (we just got rid of brooding loner Oliver Queen, we don't need another one to replace him so soon).

Taking Oyzar's point to heart I changed my mind and instead went with an Evoker Wizard, specializing in Fire magic, Randeron the Red. His sister was apprenticed to a Winter Witch in Irrisen who displeased her mistress and was sent home in a pine box, accompanied by Mynx, her ermine familiar. Devastated by her death, Randeron swore a vendetta against not only her mistress but against all Winter Witches in general. He began studying magic, focusing on fire to counter the cold based spells of his enemies.

Joeseph:
arriving early you pick a spot where you can unobtrusively observe the building in question and the street in front of it. The place itself seems to little more than a private residence. While you watch you notices a pale skinned man walking deliberately down the street, pausing every now and then to look at the numbers on the buildings. Arriving at #3 Lancet street he pauses outside before trying the door and walking in.

Sykes:

Making your way through the unfamiliar streets seems to be more of a hassle than you anticipated but you finally arrive at your destination. Looking through the window of building you notice a large circular table set in the middle of a large front room. Several brocaded tapestries hang from the walls. Entering you wrinkle your nose as you breathe in the smell of flowers and heavy spice coming from several sticks of incense burning in some wall mounted burners. In the center of the table is a note underneath a stone paperweight. Picking it up you read "Thank you for coming. I had to step out for a bit, but shall return shortly. Please, have a seat while you wait. The basket under the table contains bread and drink for you.". For indeed a wicker basket wrapped in a blue cloth sits under the table. As you reach for it the door behind you opens.

Viria:

Travelling from the Temple of Sarenrae to Lancet Street you arrive a little before sunset. Moving furtively down the street to make sure you aren't being watched or followed you arrive at #3. It's a rather nondescript house like many of the others on the street. Walking in you smell the incense of flowers burning almost being overpowered by the strong smell of spice. Three tapestries hang from the walls. One shows some sort of black skulled beast juggling human hearts, another depicts a pair of angels dancing on a snow covered peak, while the third is that of tall cloaked figure, shrouded in mist, holding a flaming sword in a skeletal hand. Standing in the middle of the room is a pale skinned man holding a blue wrapped bundle in his hands. As you open your mouth to speak the door behind you bursts open.

Aleziella:

Getting dressed you leave your flat and stride purposely through the city streets to your meeting. Arriving just as the sun is beginning to set you barge into the tiny house. Taking everything in, the smell of burning incense to the macabre wall hangings you are surprised to see a pair of humans, a man and a woman, standing in the middle of the room. Both are as surprised to see you as you are them. As you begin to question them the door behind you opens again.

Joeseph:
From your vantage point you see three people enter the building, a human male, a human woman, and an elven woman. Waiting another minute or so you can see no one else approaching who seems out of the ordinary or who seems interested in the little shop. Crossing the street, you enter.

Aleziella Libuyaza:

Returning to your flat after your last client of the night you watch the morning sun rise as you idly flip through your Harrow deck. Something feels odd as you shuffle the cards. Looking down you notice a 55th card, one with a backing different from yours. Pulling the card from the deck you realize it is The Vision, knowledge from out of the blue. Written across the card is a note "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike at him. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset. Others like you will be there. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done."
Gaedren Lamm, the man who got you addicted to the drugs that almost killed you. Gaedren Lamm, the man who enriched himself off your body. You hadn't heard that name in over a year and you had hoped that he had died and that cursed Lannis along with him. Yet like all cockroaches he had managed to survive. Yet this mysterious person who managed to place this card in your deck, no mean feat in itself, claims to have information about his whereabouts.
Your attempts at sleep throughout the day are fitful as you struggle with your dreams. Alternating between the old woman who started you on your life's path, Gaedren with his dirty face and rotted teeth, Lannis and his cruel smile, and like all recovering addicts, the seductive pull of Shiver and it's false dreams. You awaken covered in sweat an hour or so before sundown. If you hurry you can make it to this rendezvous with your destiny and finally end the nightmare that is Gaedren Lamm.

Sykes Vorkanna:

Having arrived in Korvosa only a few short weeks ago you have spent your time prowling the city's streets searching the local jewelry stores and pawn shops for your beloved Svetlana's ring. Then as fate would have it you stumbled upon your ring in the window of a local pawn shop called "Tarren's Trinkets" owned by a man named Tarren Orwell. You charge into the shop the shop and demand the return of the ring but Tarren is unwilling to just give it to you, but he will sell it to you for 500 gold pieces. Despite your best efforts to intimidate the man he just won't budge. Taking pity on your story he explains that he purchased the ring off a man named Gaedren Lamm, a local ne'er do well and would be crime boss who runs a gang of local children to do his bidding.
That was two days ago and your search for this Lamm character has since turned up empty. The people you have questioned about his whereabouts have all told you the same thing, they've heard about him but couldn't tell you where he hides out as he changes locations often always to stay one step ahead of the local watch. Frustrated you return to your room at the Three Ring Tavern and hang up your cloak before turning in for the night to try again in the morning. As you place your cloak on it's hook something falls from it's inside pocket. How'd that get there?" you muse as you pick the object up. Looking at it you realize it's a Harrow card from a deck of cards the local Varisian's use to divine the future. Upon the card is a picture of a fortress or castle made mobile by some sort of mechanical arms and legs. Turning the card over you find a note scribbled across the back "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike at him. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset. Others like you will be there. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done." What in the Hells? How could someone know what Lamm had done to you and your beloved Svetlana when you just found out about him a few days ago? This bears investigating but if they're lying then God's help them.

After the Zenith prayers and your midday meal You return to your cell at the temple for some rest and meditation before returning to the main hall for the Dusk prayers. As you hang up your cloak you notice something strange on the pillow of your cot. Lying there is a Harrow card, a fortune telling device many of the local Varisian's use to divine the future. The card is that of The Midwife, a card signifying the arrival of new ideas and information. Examining the mysterious card closer you find a note written on the back ""I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike at him. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset. Others like you will be there. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done."
You drop the card in horror as the memories of your time under Gaedren's "mercy" come flooding back. Despite all the years of tutelage with the priest's of Sarenrae you can't help but feel the bitterness and despair of your youth return. Perhaps you would be doing Sarenrae's bidding if you and these "others" the card speaks about could give the citizen's of Korvosa a little mercy by ending Lamm's reign of terror over the city's forgotten children.

Upon returning to your office after another fruitless search for your clients missing child, an unfortunate waif who has disappeared into the streets of Korvosa like so many before her, you find a strange envelope sitting upon your desk. Opening it you find a Harrow card, a fortune telling device used by many of the local Varisian's to divine the future. The picture upon this one is that of a centaur loaded down with gear and equipment. On the back of the card, written in a woman's handwriting, is a note that reads "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike at him. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset. Others like you will be there. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done." Gaedren Lamm, the man you hold responsible for your personal downfall. A drug pusher and Fagin-like gang boss who uses the city's downtrodden children to do his dirty work. If this note is true and this mysterious benefactor knows Lamm's location you could put an end to this bastard and Korvosa would be a much better place.

Korvosa, a city on the brink!

King Eodred II lies dying of an unknown disease. A disease which has resisted all attempts, magical and mundane, to cure it. The Saffron King Was a shrewd negotiator, if unexceptional monarch, whose trade agreements often enriched Korvosa's coffers. Money which was as often as not spent on a lavish lifestyle as it was on numerous public works, which endeared him to the local populace.
It was such a lifestyle that, given his penchant for younger women, no one seemed shocked when he, after a scandalously short courtship, married Ileosa Arvanxi, a noblewoman from one of Westcrown's most powerful families, a woman a third his age. It soon became clear that Ileosa held nothing but contempt for Korvosa and it's citizens often calling the city little more than a "backwater colonial village". It was this disdain that did little to endear her to her subjects, many of which called her "the foreign harlot" (others called her much worse).
It is into this chaotic time our heroes find themselves given a chance to find revenge upon an old enemy who has wronged them and to rise to the occasion and be heralded has "Heroes of Korvosa".

Okay everyone, sorry for the delay. Thank you all for expressing an interest in playing and for making an already tough decision even harder.
After some painstaking thought I've decided on the following four players to join me in rescuing the citystate of Korvosa from the clutches of it's evil queen.

Aleziella Libuyaza
Joseph Hill
Sykes Vorkanna
Viria Volus

Thank you all. I'll have the Discussion thread up momentarily and you can all dot in there. I should have the introductory thread up tomorrow morning.

Thanks everyone for keeping this going and answering some of the questions that had come up. I've been rather busy at work these last few days as I prepare for my vacation next week. I'll go over everyone's submissions tonight and tomorrow, if I have any questions I'll send them to you via PM.
Remember that recruitment closes Friday night, so anyone who has dotted for interest but hasn't submitted at least a proof of concept will need to do so by then. Six o'clock is not a hard set deadline and I will consider anyone who has already dotted in who can get their character in before Midnight Friday.

However, no NEW submissions will be considered after 6 p.m. Friday.

I'll announce the final four Saturday morning.

Thank you,
Marik.

I can't really say how I'll select the party. It's based partly on backstory and on crunch, who will compliment who, and gut feeling on how everyone will get along. It's not an exact science and I've made some mistakes in the past.
