Background:
Some few here recall that the man was a soldier in the Argoan army once, risen to the rank of minor knight due to his martial prowess and commanding presence despite his disturbing appearance and dubious ethics. Torturing enemy soldiers for information during a small border war with a neighbouring kingdom was not his only war crime – tasked with ensuring that an enemy army could not easily live off the land as it passed through the border regions, he had an entire community of peasants burnt alive, locked in their homes as he had their village and fields burnt. Not only would the enemy not find food or shelter, there would be no conscripts to be had, no intelligence to be gained with the locals dead – besides, they had tried to stop their fields from being burnt. His men had baulked at the order, but complied after he beat one of them to death for insubordination. His methods and reasoning were not viewed with favour by the nobles or priests, and he was thrown into the Black Tower.
He is brutal, ruthless and short tempered (although the long term in prison has taught him patience). Although he has no illusions that he would not be considered ‘evil’, he believes that the ends justify the means and that most of what he’s done was for the benefit of the nation. To show compassion and kindness would be to show weakness … of course, he’s also a sadist and a bully, so if his ruthless actions that he thinks benefitted the nations also sow fear and cause him personal satisfaction, all the better.
His perception that he did not receive a fair trial, compounded by his long term in prison have near to squashed his ‘patriotic’ outlook, but he does not wish to see the nation destroyed … although it would be far better with a change of leadership, ie, himself at or near the top. And the people responsible for his incarceration need to die.
He’s not actually opposed to the current mission. He plans to succeed, win his freedom, then assess his further options re revenge etc. His motives regarding discovering the parameters of the collars and Chandi’s ability / willingness to use them are more to know what his boundaries are. At this point he sees the others as useful allies (although he values combat ability and brute strength he also sees the benefits in other skill sets such as magic, stealth etc.) in order to meet his ends. At the point where any of them stop being useful allies or seem set to sabotage the mission (unless he at some point decides himself that the mission no longer aligns with his own goals) he would have no qualms about killing them or leaving them to die if he thinks he can do so without risking death himself.
Despite his brutish appearance and lack of conversation, he’s actually fairly smart and will act accordingly. He’s willing to form alliances with others in the group where he thinks doing so puts him at an advantage, but he would prefer Chandi to believe he won’t play well with others for now. He’s wary about other people in the group forming alliances that don’t include him, as he assumes they might actively or inadvertently work against him.
