Just a quick question - a lot of spells that deal damage have increased damage based upon caster level. For instance - Produce Flame deals 1d6 + 1/level.

My question is: does the 1d6 increase due to caster level as well? Or is it just the +1?

I'm reading it as it is only the +1 that increases, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

Thanks!!!!

Some abilities state that the DC for a saving throw against the ability is 10+1/2 class level + ability mod.

If I am a level one character, do I add 0 to that DC (since half my level is 0.5, and most things round down)? Or is it a minimum of 1?

Thanks!

Quick question for you guys...

Ultimate Magic has several Variant Channel abilities that modify a character's channel energy ability. My question is this - the book lists two effects - one when healing, one when harming. If I channel positive energy, do I only gain the heal bonus? Or does the harm bonus kick in when using positive energy to hit undead?

Thanks!!!

Awesome. That is what I thought, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks Starglim!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If a character multiclasses, do they gain feats based upon their total Hit Dice, or based upon each class level?

For instance, I gain a feat at first level. If, when I reach second level, I decide to take another class, do I gain a level then too because it is 1st level?

Thanks!

Perfect, thank you both!!!

So is that wealth inclusive of all coin and gear? Or just make sure the players have that much coin by that level so they can purchase gear?

Hello all, I have GM'd for a number of years using the GURPS system, and recently we have decided to move over to Pathfinder.

One of the biggest differences I have found between the systems, is that gear plays a much more important role in Pathfinder, and it is expected that players obtain gear appropriate for their level.

My question is this - is there a place where I can find out what gear, and how much gear, is appropriate for any given level? Is this expectation a carryover from D&D 3.5 that I am just not familiar with?

Thanks all for the help!!!

I am new to pathfinder, and i am looking through the various sourcebooks to find out how a character's melee damage increases as they level, but i cannot find it.

Are feats/spells/magic gear the only way to get a longsword that does more than 1d8? (other than boosting STR)

Or is there a progression of increased dmage as a player levels up?

Thanks!!!!

That's what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks Phasics!!!

The Magus spell combat rules state:

"If he casts this spell defensively,he can decide to take an additional penalty on his attack rolls,up to his Intelligence bonus, and add the same amount as a circumstance bonus on his concentration check. If the check
fails, the spell is wasted, but the attacks still take the penalty.
A magus can choose to cast the spell first or make the weapon
attacks first, but if he has more than one attack, he cannot
cast the spell between weapon attacks. (UM pg 10)"

Does this mean that I need to announce that I will be casting my spell defensively before I take ANY action? Even if I choose to attack with my melee weapon first?

Sweet :)

That's sort of the conclusion I had come to, but was just wondering if I had missed the rules. And no, there was not even a question of dealing damage (the PC wanted to throw a foe into a bookshelf that they had grappled). It was more for cinematic effect rather than actual damage dealing, so I allowed it (as it was good story), but it still left me wondering.

This helped a lot, thanks for the responses!

Ok cool, that helps.

So, I assume then that only those with the feats can technically do that? Or is this more of a cinematic GM story telling feature?

When an alchemist makes his catalysts for the day for his bombs, does he have to specify that one is for an acid bomb, another for a force bomb, and so on? Or can the same catalyst be used to make a bomb of any damage type?

Thanks!

Is it possible to grapple a foe, and then throw them (like a judo throw)? If so, how is the distance thrown calculated?

Thanks!

This is amazing - Revel, I had not realized that spell preparation, and the idea for scrolls/wands is fantastic Leaping Gnome.

Thanks everyone for your advice, this is really helpful.

Basically, our intention was to make all casters spontaneous casters, while limiting their spell lists. But i see your point on just taking the sorcerer class. The others would just be a matter of style - what additional abilities, if any, would the player want.

So then i have this question - have any of you had issues where a player prepared spells unsuited to the session, and how to navigate or avoid that possible conflict?

Hello everyone, I am a newbie to the Pathfinder system, but I have been GMing for a number of years using another system (GURPS).

In GURPS, magic is balanced through a system of time to cast as well as mana spent. In coming to Pathfinder, I see that one of the ways that PF balances magic is through spell preparation - some classes can only prepare a limited number of their spells known.

Me and another on of my GM friends, who switched over to PF with me, have tossed around the idea of doing away with spell preparation. We understand that this unbalances some of the classes, and are in the process of discussing other ways to rebalance them.

So my question is this - have any of you ever done away with spell preparation? If so, did it work? Or did it have unforseen consequences that made you decide to go back to preparing spells?

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer! :)

Perfect, thank you so much Talonhawke!

I was looking at the Magus class today, and at level 1, I can use my arcane pool to add a +1 enhancement to a weapon.

My question is this: What is that +1 to? Is it +1 to the amount of damage, is it +1 to the attack rolls, or is it +1 to the damage dice (i.e. a 1d6 weapon now becomes a 2d6 weapon).

Thanks in advance for all your help :)

Excellent. Thanks again!!!

Its not a spell, but a spell like ability. The cleric fire domain ability firebolt lists no saving throw, but implies that it is possible to miss. Was unsure what i had to do to hit.

You guys have been fantastic, tons of great info, this has helped a lot.

So if a spell lists nothing about ranged or touch, but does list a saving throw, is it assumed to have automatically hit, and the target gets a chance to negate effects?

Thanks!

Hey everyone. I am new to the Pathfinder system, and i have a question about how spells are cast.

Some spells imply that there is a chance of missing the target, so what do i roll, and what am i rolling against to determine if i hit?

Is it d20 + dex mod + BAB vs enemy AC?

Do creatures who are hit also get a saving throw chance to negate effects if listed on spell description?

Thanks!!!!
