I’m in the process of creating a villain for a campaign, but—due to multiple templates—I’m unsure what her final creature type should be. I’ll explain:

The base creature is a forlarren (fey type). Because her sire is a very powerful demon, I decided to give her the half-fiend template (which would make her a native outsider). Easy enough, so far.

Now comes the tricky part. The forlarren discovered a ritual that would allow her to unlock her fey potential, by sacrificing (i.e. murdering) her mother and a number of other faerie creatures. This effectively allowed her to go through a metamorphosis, giving her the fey creature acquired template (which would make her a fey). Would this combination make her a fey (augmented native outsider), or would the outsider type override the acquired fey type?

Sounds like a good sourcebook. I may have to pick this up when it's released . . .

According to Ultimate Combat: "An Unarmed Fighter is proficient with all monk weapons, including exotic monk weapons." Which of the following do "monk weapons" entail?

1: Weapons that the monk class is proficient in.
2: Weapons in the monk weapon group (as revised in Ultimate Combat).
3: Weapons with the "monk" special quality.

For some reason, it seems unclear to me. Any assistance would be swell! :)

Kingmaker, Part 1: Stolen Land

The Greenbelt Charter:
Be it so known that the bearer of this charter has been charged by the Swordlords of Restov, acting upon the greater good and authority vested within them by the office of the Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, has been granted the right of exploration and travel within the wilderness region known as the Greenbelt. Exploration should be limited to an area no further than thirty-six miles southeast and northwest and sixty miles southwest of Oleg’s Trading Post. The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered. The punishment for unrepentant banditry remains, as always, execution by sword or rope. So witnessed on this 24th day of Calistril, in the 4711th year of Absalom’s Reckoning, under watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and authority granted by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

30 Pharast, 4711 A.R.

The morning greets you with a chilly embrace, cloaked in black clouds and the jarring rumble of thunder. After a quick breakfast, a thin drizzle of rain begins to fall as you pack up your camp, slowly soaking through your cloaks and adding to the wind’s chill. With your mule giving only token brays of insolence, you manage continue your trek along the South Rostland Road and toward your destination.

The weather had been fine when you left Restov a week ago; spring’s thaw was well underway, and the gods seemed content to smile upon your journey. It was such easy going that you passed up both the village of Nivakta’s Crossing and Fort Serenko without needing to stop for supplies, and as Rostland’s rolling hills gave way to the Stolen Lands’ grassy plains, it seemed your journey would be a fortuitous one.

Unfortunately, this morning’s rain proves otherwise. The Stolen Lands are just as inhospitable as they’ve always been, and all the royal charters in Brevoy can never change this.

The storm abates after an hour, and the remainder of the morning’s travel is a drier one. A mile off, a squat wooden fort rests along the road, dwarfed by the expanse of bright green grass that surrounds it. A darker green line lies much further to the southeast, likely the forest known as the Narlmarches. A thin stream of smoke rises from the fort, all but imperceptible against the bruise-colored clouds.

As you press onward, you note that the fort is surrounded by a wooden palisade that stands about 10 feet high. At each corner of the palisade are 20-foot square watchtowers, each topped with a catapult. From here, you can spot one entrance through the palisade—a 30-foot-wide wooden gate fitted with tall double doors, wide open. The gate is topped with a large oak log, lying lengthwise over the doors.

Knowledge (engineering) DC 10:
The fort seems to have been recently repaired.

Knowledge (engineering) DC 15:
The structure appears to be an old border fort of Brevic make, bearing the age of several decades. Though likely abandoned for many years, it seems to have been recently repaired.

The unmistakable smell of cooking bacon and baking bread comes from within.

Welcome, Kingmakers!

I'm very happy with the group we've assembled. With luck, your characters will be able to explore and tame the Stolen Lands, and possibly rule a fledgling kingdom. Many have tried--and failed--to claim these lands as their own. Will you be able to accomplish what has previously been impossible?

I plan on using this thread as a place to discuss, plan, and comment on the IC thread (coming soon, after we iron out some things and when my wife relieves me of babysitting duties). Feel free to voice any opinions or questions you might have, either now or at any time as the campaign progresses. My goal is for all of us to have fun, so if something's not fun . . . please, by all means, let me know!

For the most part, I'll be using Golarion canon and PFRPG rules. If there's any differences between the way I want to do things and the way things are in the aforementioned canon and rules, I'll let you know (if I'm even aware of the difference). That said, I'll be personalizing Kingmaker for my own purposes; I think that that is an important part of running an AP. I won't be deviating so much that the AP will be unrecognizable, though. I love the AP as written, but I'd like to "fill in the blanks", if you will.

And with that, this thread is open for business! :)

I penned this poem-styled prophecy for my tabletop Kingmaker game. I took a few liberties--for example, I included Gozreh along with Pharasma as the "antagonists" of the prophecy, as a hook for the party's inquisitor of Gozreh. Neil Spicer's Black Sisters just inspire that much creativity on my part!

The Prophecy of Armag the Twice-Born:

“A son of Mammoths, Tiger’s clan
“He came upon the Stolen Lands.
“By sword he smote, and rage he swore
“To subjugate all in his war.”

“But pride for pride, and blood for blood,
“With Gorum’s aid, did he succumb
“To boasting loud, with haughty eye
“That he, Armag, would never die.”

“To Gozreh and Pharasma’s eyes
“The boast was nothing but a lie.
“’How dare,’ said they, ‘Armag should cry
“’That he, mere man, should never die!’”

“The Pale One plotted from her home
“To steal him to her Yard of Bones.
“When she and Gozreh had their way,
“That time was Armag’s dying day.”

“Red dragon sent by vengeful gods
“Ripped out Armag’s heart with its claws.
“But Gorum had last laugh that day;
“Armag’s black soul was here to stay.”

Ovinrbaane, so named the Sword
“Was crafted by the Iron Lord
“To keep the warrior’s soul interred
“Until the stars had their last word.”

“And born again, he shall return
“To widow wives, your fields to burn.
“Twice-Born, Armag, with damning cry
“Shall show the gods he’ll never die.”

“Gyronna’s chosen, without Name!
“Black Sisters wielding hatred’s flame!
“They’ll crack the Earth, and bleed the Sky:
“Armag Twice-Born shall never die!”

Hello! As the title states, I've decided to take the plunge and begin a Play-by-Post Kingmaker campaign. I've never run a PbP before, but have been GMing (D&D, Pathfinder, other systems) for about 18 years. I have participated in a few PbPs here--as a PC--so I have some working knowledge of how they play out.

I realize that there are exactly one zillion Kingmaker PbPs here on site, but I'd like to run it anyway; I'm familiar with the AP (I'm running it for my tabletop group), and I feel it meshes well with the usual speed of PbPs. Besides, carving out a kingdom from the wilderness and then ruling it can be very, very cool! ;)

I know how difficult it can be to get into PbPs, so I've decided not to use a first-come-first-serve method of recruitment. Instead, I'd like you--the potential players--to briefly outline a character concept (full character sheets are not required, at this time), followed by how much PbP experience you have (if any).

Note: PbP experience (or lack thereof) is not a qualifier; I simply want to be able to peruse previous PbP posts of yours, if it doesn't trouble you. If you have no PbP experience, that's okay!

And with that, I suppose I should detail how I'd like to run this . . .

We'll be using Pathfinder rules. I'd like each participant to pledge at least one post per day (unforseen circumstances notwithstanding); if you foresee something coming up to limit this, please let me know! Further character creation guidelines follow. :)

Before You Begin: Please read the Kingmaker Player’s Guide before you begin; it’s free and will help your PC fit into the campaign!

Ability Scores:
We’ll be using the purchase method (High Fantasy, 20 points). I don’t personally believe that “optimization” or “role-playing” are mutually exclusive, so feel free to build your character’s ability scores however you wish. At any rate, I’m favoring point-buy, as it creates roughly equal characters.

Races:
While I appreciate all the various “playable” races in the Bestiary and other supplements, I’d prefer that PCs select a race from the Core Rulebook. The Advanced Player’s Guide offers alternate Racial Traits; you may utilize these, if you desire.

Classes:
Please select a class from either the Core Rulebook or the Advanced Player’s Guide. I’m also allowing the magus (from Ultimate Magic. As I’m not familiar with Ultimate Combat, I really don’t want to allow gunslingers, ninja, or samurai.

Archetypes:
Feel free to select an archetype, if you wish. You can have more than one (subject to the usual restrictions, of course). I’m allowing any archetypes from the Advanced Player’s Guide or the Inner Sea Primer; any from Ultimate Magic I’ll consider on a case-by-case basis. If you select an archetype, please run it by me; I’d like it to make sense within the context of the campaign.

Skills and Feats:
By all means, pick any skills you want. Feats, however, I’d like to limit to those found in the Core Rulebook, the Advanced Player’s Guide, and the Inner Sea World Guide (for the latter, please let feat selection make sense for the PC’s background). I’ll consider Ultimate Magic feats on a case-by-case basis (for example, Antagonize is right out!).

Note: If you’re a human, you start with your ethnic language as well as Common (Taldane) and any bonus languages due to Intelligence or Linguistics. Taldans and Chelaxians only get Common (but they speak it very well!).

Traits:
Pick one Campaign Trait (from the Kingmaker Player’s Guide) and one other trait from the Advanced Player’s Guide. I will allow Regional Traits (from the Inner Sea Primer), as long as it makes sense with the PC’s background. Yes, you can pick Rich Parents if you wish, but please do not purchase any magic items with the extra starting cash. I’m not allowing traits from any other sources.

Hero Points:
I am using these alternate rules from the Advanced Player’s Guide. Hero Point feats (and spells) are acceptable (as long as you qualify, of course).

Equipment:
Starting gold is average. Please, no magic item purchases at this time (even if you can afford it). Masterwork items are acceptable. I’m not exactly an “Encumbrance Fascist”, but I’d still like it if you kept track of how much your PC is carrying. Don’t forget about food, water, and warm clothes! A mount wouldn’t be a bad idea, either, but it isn’t a necessity. As an aside: I do keep track of ammunition, for all you ranged-attackers. Of course, missiles that miss have a chance of being salvaged!

I’m allowing the Core Rulebook, the Inner Sea World Guide, and the Advanced Player’s Guide as equipment-sources; please do not draw from Adventurer’s Armory, or the like.

Other Stuff:
Hit Points start out at maximum, as normal. Animal companions (and the like) also have maximum starting hit points. Thereafter, you may either roll h.p. as you advance or take the average (your choice; you may decide which you’d like to do at each level). Non-special mounts/livestock/whatever have average h.p., as normal.

Please, no evil alignments. Neutrals are okay.

Starting age can either be rolled or selected, but please start your PC as an adult representative of their race; minimum age depends on your class (for example, a dwarf cleric’s minimum starting age is 47). No child PCs, old PCs, et cetera.
If you’re a spellcaster, you may choose spells from the Advanced Player’s Guide, but any from Ultimate Magic must be okayed by me.

If I’ve forgotten any character-generation requirements, I’ll let you know. Happy creating!

Is the title a FFX reference? Coolness.

One of my players uses these; she swears by them. Personally, I'd like large character sheet-books more in a PDF format so I can print the sheets I want to use instead of having to deal with the entire thing. They do look nice, though!

Could a paladin with the Warrior of the Holy Light archetype also be an Oathbound paladin?

Since the Oathbound adds spells to a paladin's spell list, and a Warrior of the Holy Light removes spellcasting altogether, would they just not get the bonus spells, or is it an incompatible combination? Interpretations from the community are appreciated!

Hey, all! I'll be starting a campaign that takes place in Hermea; the PCs are offspring of Hermean paragons. I would love it if you could help me with Campaign traits for this project! :)

Silly me. I just found this thread, by searching for "Zatoichi". Heh. I'll read this thread I found, but would appreciate any advice here, regardless. Thanks for your time!

I am very happy about this project's completion, and for DSP's second print-run for this product--before its release! Congratulations, Jeremy and Andreas. I sense my preordered book will be arriving soon . . .

I, personally, am very happy with the changes DSP has made to this psionics update. I look forward to seeing what you create in the future!

EDIT: Ooh! I'm first! :D

As per one of my player's suggestions, I've decided to try out rolling a "defense roll" instead of a static AC number (1d20+applicable mods instead of 10+applicable mods). I've let him know that I like the system the way it is--and its abstraction--but that we would try it out for a session, to see if it bogs things down too much or creates any other problems we don't like. Have any of you implemented a similar rule before, and--if so--how did it impact your game?

Hey. Just wanted to post that Dreamscarred Press is looking to put contributors' names in a "Thank You" section of their book. I think they're wondering where everybody's at, as there has not been a huge advance in the many people who suggested/playtested/etc. Psionics Unleashed. Dabbler, where are you? ;)

Anyway, just wanted to post this! If you've had any creative and/or mechanical input into DSP's Psionics Unleashed, visit DSP's website and post your name, if you'd like to be thanked!

Heh, me and the fiancee definitely have to see this. We've been watching all the current Harry Potter movies (on Order of the Phoenix, right now) in preparation for the new one coming out. Sure, it'll be cheesy...but I think it'll be funny, as well!

I'm not sure where to post this; I'll try here. I am looking for some 4-sided dice that are shaped like d8s (or d12s), as well as 3-sided dice shaped like d6s. Basically, I'm looking for non-annoying, lazy ways to produce numbers, with dice, that non-lazy gamers can produce with a little effort. Anyway, does anybody know of any sites that sell dice such as these? I'm having a miserable time finding any!

Thanks, Paizonians!

Hmm. Perhaps no Tulsans frequent the Paizo site. It makes me wonder about where all the PFRPG merchandise goes when it sells like crazy at the FLGS . . . .

First of all, I'd like to preface this: I've been a lurker here on these boards for a fair amount of time, and have been impressed with the amount of support offered from both players and Paizo employees. I first noticed Pathfinder about a year ago (just before the Core Rulebook came out), and after realizing that it was an extension of 3.xE, as opposed to a whole new edition,I was hooked. Heck, I've even warmed to Golarion; I've generally favored homebrew campaign settings, but have reconfigured my bias to include Golarion as a world-option for GMing, due to the fact that Golarion is, in my estimation, the most interesting/diverse published setting I've yet seen.

That said, I've also never used APs/modules in my life (I've always made my own adventures, you know, back when I actually had the time to do so!), and am interested in running an AP in Golarion. Out of curiosity, which AP would be the least complicated for me to run? Are the APs pretty user-friendly? Would something like Kingmaker possibly be overwhelming to a first-time Pathfinder GM/published adventure-user?

Note that I am an experienced RPG adjudicator (DMing since early 2E); I've just never ran modules or the like.

Thank you all for reading this random "newbie soapbox-request". I look forward to any insight you can offer.

~~Mike

Out of curiosity, where can I find rules for equipment storage capacity (i.e., how many pounds backpacks, belt pouches, etc. can carry, max. capacity) in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook?

I hope this isn't a stupid question!

In the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, page 26, a halfling's attribute adjustments are +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma and -2 Strength. However, just after this listing is the information that: "Halflings are nimble and strong-willed . . .", which leads me to perceive that a +2 Wisdom adjustment is more appropriate. To compound things further, page 453 of the Core Rulebook (in Chapter 14) states that a halfling NPC's racial abilty adjustment is -2 Strength, +2 Dexterity and +2 Intelligence.

So . . . does a halfling get a +2 to Charisma, Wisdom, or Intelligence?
