Summary in Lissa's own words (and thoughts)::

We have seen some sh-t, let me tell you, and I have no time for your complaining about a baby scratch. Why, we once came back from a tour (being a slave) with a gifted surgeon (mistress was a fey that liked to experiment) and the sh-t she got up to to save their lives (and break us/them). Well, just be glad this is a simple twenty stitches is all I'm saying. How'd we end up here? The usual way, we were volunteered (we were broke and desperate) as an assistant surgeon (we are not even vaguely qualified seeing as our surgery knife is an inanimate glaive, but thank goddess for charity) to help old Maud with you sad lot of troopers. Bless her soul. She's with shelyn now, she is, gone to the great song. (Maud is dead, it could have been us) With a rather loud bang even. (Are you listening? Maud is explosively dead, that could have been us) In short, things are going exactly as planned (we're so f-cked).

Lissa Backstory Fluff::

The portal would be open tomorrow. She'd have to make do with what she'd managed to scrounge and repair. She touched the scalpel again, ran her fingers along the tops of the assassin's arrows. Too bad she couldn't get the bow, but the mistress had broken it. Shattered it against the ceiling, and the pieces had stayed there you mean. She shivered, and reviewed the path to the portal. Auri said it would be open for disposal, and warned her the real world wouldn't be what she expected. Told her to look for a human temple, any temple would do but beauty was best. Whatever that meant. How do you build a temple out of beauty? The mistress finds shattered bodies beautiful, how would you build... She shuddered and put it from her mind, then tucked herself up to fall asleep. The blanket was soft, of course, the bed divine. Even slaves slept well here, until they didn't. She still slept at least. Not like the others, staring at walls for a few hours then up again. She shivered again, and touched the hidden arrows one last time. They felt real. The portal would be open. Auri had said so. Auri said a lot of things, but she had never lied. Auri said she had to get free before she became too sweetly other, too much a part of this place. Lissa didn't know what that meant, but Auri had never been cruel to her. The girl drifted to sleep, her dreams filled with songbirds and the dash to the forest portal.
