I liked the 2nd edition "method" above, too. However, I could never wrap my head around the fact that a combat round in 2e was a full minute! A caster should be able to "shake off" a hit in a full darn minute!
Now, this works well in 3e where a round is only 6 seconds.
I <heart> 6 second rounds... makes so much more sense for martial combat, too.
