Kerak was born in Old Korvosa to two half-orc parents. His father was a caravan guard - when he could get work. His mother was a washerwoman. With his father being gone for long stretches, and his mother busy working, Kerak was often left to his own devices. A naturally inquisitive, curious boy, he would often wander about Old Korvosa, poking his nose into places where it didn’t belong - and often getting threatened with a beating for it, if not the actual beating itself. Kerak’s mother tried to encourage him to make friends with other children his own age, but his orcish heritage typically resulted in mockery and scorn. This, combined with the fact he appeared to have inherited an orcish temper, resulted in his becoming increasingly withdrawn from others and valuing what few kindnesses he was granted.
Kerak eventually got a job at an inn in Old Korvosa sweeping floors in exchange for the chance to read from the innkeeper’s private library. One day, the innkeeper’s brother, a teacher at the Theumanexus College in Korvosa, came to the inn to visit and was impressed by Kerak’s intellect and studiousness. He sponsored him for a place at the College.
At the College, there was an optional weapons training component that most students ignored, since it wasn’t magic, but Kerak chose to work with. He was gifted in physical strength and agility, and his talent there shaped his magical studies, as he focused on magic that was useful in a fight - for protection or offense. Still, many of his peers derided him for not exclusively studying magic, and he remained somewhat friendless and ostracized. The other students said he’d never be anything. After graduating, to prove them wrong, Kerak sought out a place he could prove his worth. Hearing about a dangerous place called Darkmoon Vale, he headed for the town of Falcon’s Hollow and the opportunity to prove his worth.
