I found this thread because I'm working on a character concept for PFS play which uses the Vow of Poverty.
The initial build was designed for use in a non-PFS game that, frankly, was over-geared, which meant I had to really work the system to make sure I could keep up with the party. My worry was that it would be OVER powered for PFS play.
I'm going to see if the other options I used are PFS legal, but... anyone saying 'VoP automagically makes you unplayable' isn't trying hard enough.
Also, I'm really on the side of those saying the monk can't 'store up' gold. Spending gold immediately on a single item at the end of a session really seems to be, in character, more of 'taking an item instead of cash, which is your one item'. It will mean that item is a little underleveled, but creative use of that item and building your character around that item can compensate for a lot.
