Background

Kasumi left home at an early age, always getting into some form of mischief or another. He'd always dreamed about what the world outside his home was like. When the time came that he left, he was still a child. He stowed away on a ship bearing various trade goods from the harbour. Eventually he was discovered and dropped at the next port, after having been locked up in a cage for weeks.
Not having anyone to turn to, Kasumi grew up having to beg and barter for food to survive. In his wanderings in this new city, Kasumi had spent what time he wasnt foraging for food watching the local children practice swordsmanship. When asked if he wished to join, he would flee. One day though, the master of the dojo ambushed him, handing him a wooden sword and provoking him to attack the man.
He learned much of swordplay there, but it was soon apparent that his skills were in need of a particular kind of instruction. As it was soon discovered that Kasumi had a gift for the arcane arts, and wished to continue his training with the sword. His talent at weaving spells and the blade together was of rare quality, and when he grew in age he would depart, earning his keep among ships that were hiring for labor or protection from pirates.
He discovered a talent there that hadn't been expected, and soon was pursuing bounties on any pirates he found to earn a modest living. Not for any enmity toward pirates in general, but to be able to afford comfortable living and personal freedom.
