Howdy!

I'd like to build a PFS Shoanti bard (possibly a skald) and make use of the Totem Spear. Fluff wise it's a Shoanti tribal weapon, but it is listed as Exotic, which I understand. The problem is finding a way to be proficient with it prior to 3rd level due to the BAB requirement for EWP. None of the Shoanti Traits or Feats give proficiency with the weapon, and I've tried looking through all the resources I can find looking for a means of making it work, but I'm not having any luck.

Are there other means to gain proficiency with an ancestral/racial weapon, or do I have to wait until 3rd? I appreciate any tips you could provide.

Howdy!

There are a few prior threads from a few years back, but I'm hoping to find something officially spelled out about gunslinger and DR. I am a relatively new DM and it would help to have the FAQ hammer to back me up. At my latest PFS table a gunslinger/bolt ace made the argument that touch attacks bypass DR. We read it at the table but ultimately I decided to ignore his interpretation. It didn't disrupt the game and everything went fine, though I did have to ignore is continuous comments about 'This attack bypasses DR".

Anywho, this seems to be the line in rule book that is causing confusion:

"Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury poison, a monk's stunning, and injury-based disease. Damage Reduction does not negate touch attacks , energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact."

The players argument seems to be that if a touch attach cannot be "negated", it would imply the damage cannot be reduced at all, therefore all gunslinger/bolt ace attacks that are touch attacks will always overcome dr.
I disagree, but I feel this argument is going to come up again if I can't find something solid. I tried looking through FAQ's but couldn't seem to find it.

I'd appreciate any help in locating a solid resolution one way or the other.

Does anyone else get the impression that this School is overpowered? Assuming you max your INT, at first level you can have a ranged attack out to 100 feet that has a +5 to attack and does d6+5 damage, and can do so 8 times a day. While it is not a touch attack like the other similar school-based abilities, the damage output is cannot be equaled until 10th level, or surpassed until 12th level (again, when compared to the other beginner school-based attacks).

Additionally, you get a floating enhancement bonus to Dex, Wisdom, or Con, which can be a huge benefit when using a 20 point buy system for stats.

I enjoy power-gaming, but even I am getting a little queasy at making a wizard with this school. It seems like a sure fire way to annoy DMs with it's "overpowering-ness".

Is there something I am not taking consideration? I am curious what other people think about it.

Would you gain additional claw attacks when raging if you have the Beast Totem rage power when your BAB gets to 6 and beyond? The Lesser power specifically states you gain two claw attacks, so does that mean even a 20th level Barbarian would only have two claw attacks? Or do you still gain additional claw attacks when your BAB increases to the appropriate levels?
