This is with regard to the spell Dark Whispers:

https://aonprd.com/SpellDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Dark%20Whispers

The Message cantrip states "The message does not have to travel in a straight line. It can circumvent a barrier if there is an open path between you and the subject, and the path’s entire length lies within the spell’s range."

In Dark Whispers, it only states "Once the spell has been cast, you don’t need to have line of effect to the targets or their shadows to communicate back and forth." But it does not mention spell range.

Does Dark Whispers continue to function, if the targets move beyond the spell range? How about if they move to different planes?

Flashback: At Lady Zhia's Costume Wardrobe

Since the Iron Maiden had opted against the coordinated team outfits, Jonovan decided to rethink his approach. Having a single member mismatched with the rest would merely highlight disunity. Perhaps it would be best if they each did their own costume.

That still left Jonovan with the question: Should he stick with his tested and true, albeit simple Shinobi Shozoku, or pick out something swankier from the wardrobe?

After some consideration, he recalled that the main reason he didn't dress up was mostly because he didn't want to waste gold needlessly on fancy clothing. When it could be better spent on a Greater Hat of Disguise. But if Lady Zhia was generously sponsoring his costume as well, he saw no reason not to take up the offer.

He browsed through the endless array of clothing, trying on various things, and occasionally getting Mon-mon's opinion. After several hours of this endless tedium, he was reminded that while gold was the primary reason he avoided clothes shopping, the effort and exhaustion involved were definitely not far behind. In the end, he gave up on finding a perfect match, and settled on what seemed good enough for the occasion.

Introduction at Xielan

(OOC: Pre-cast Rod-Extended Heroism, and Rod-Extended Echolocation.)

Jonovan appeared on deck in his selected costume, an esoteric mix of Avistani mage-wear with some Tian aesthetics: A shimmering deep blue robe sporting a tall and wide collar, and lined with silver trimmings. The torso was emblazoned with Tien style silhouette embroidery, outlining golden tigers prowling amongst red rocks and various plant life. A similar blue and silver and embroidered mantle helped to emphasize his shoulders. The robe gave way to a pair of black trousers and brown leather shoes, which blended with the floor, making it seem as if he floated just above the ground.

He was scheduled to go last, so while the others were carrying out their introduction, he cast Fly in preparation. When his turn came, he stepped forward and then off the ship entirely. Hovering in mid air, he gave an opening bow, and began his performance: A complex dance routine of soaring grace, taking advantage of his aerial capabilities to do things no artist could normally accomplish. He lacked any proper musical accompaniment, and had instead requested the gunpowder engineers deploy fireworks with a regular rhythmic timing for his segment. Boom, boom, boom. Like the beat of a drum, he danced in tune to the pyrotechnics in the night sky.

Of course, he was not as good as Ai Lua, but where he lacked raw skill, he relied on magic to make up the difference. Finally, he closed his performance by executing a triple somersault onto the pier, and giving his closing bow.

And we have a team name!

In unrelated news, I had prepared a backstory on how Jonovan got the Clay-Mage nickname for the introductory meeting. But nobody asked, so it's been added to his profile.

"Ah, I remember you." Jonovan's eyes widen in recognition.

"You're Ai Lua, that girl with da..." Jonovan stops himself before he says daddy issues. That would probably not have gone down well, and he still wanted his teammates to like him. At least enough to cooperate with him. *Ahem* "That girl with da...zzling beauty."

Nice save, he thought to himself.

"Really master?" The dragon by his side blurted out. "She doesn't look all that..."

Jonovan winced. "Mon-mon, would you kindly please watch my back?"

"Yes, master." The dragon said cheerfully, before turning around.

Jonovan gives a weak smile, hoping Ai Lua had not taken offence. He quickly tries to change the subject and heap on shameless flattery. "It's Clay-Mage, merely a descriptive nickname. Certainly nothing as grand and poetic as Red Petal sharp against the Moonlight."

As mentioned, Jonovan plans to use Shadow Conjuration to mimic Draconic Ally for free. The resulting shadowy dragon is a pushover in combat. But it is useful as a loyal servant, status symbol, and for nightly duties like keeping watch for intruders, while Jonovan sleeps.

For spells, Jonovan will cast the following on himself: Mage Armor, Rod Extended Heroism, Rod Extended Echolocation

A strange pair of figures walked up to the main door of the Ming Cha Teahouse.

The first was Jonovan, a half-elf of Avistani blood, a laowai in the land of Tian Xia. His cerulean eyes and handsome face, were framed by shoulder length silver hair. And he was dressed in a finely made dark shozoku of a shinobi. Although, for this introductory meeting, the hood and face mask had been taken off.

The second was Mon-mon, a light blue dragon the size of a medium riding dog. She was covered in azure swirls which resembled the outline of clouds, and moved with a certain grace, following the half-elf by his side. But if you looked too closely, she seemed to fade out of reality, as if she wasn't entirely there. "Master, this looks like the place." She chirped cheerfully.

Jonovan paused, and looked up at the teahouse. His practical mercenary gaze scoured the exterior, taking in possible routes for entry and escape. He had considered simply sneaking into the place, and appearing out of nowhere, like some terribly mysterious ninja. It was a trick he had recently unlocked from cultivating his convoluted bloodlines, and he was certainly dressed for the part.

But he decided against it. Who knew if this generous sponsor would be creeped out by such a stunt. In the end, he settled for simply walking in through the front door, with a dragon servant by his side as a status symbol. Hopefully, that would be enough to impress the sponsor, and his new teammates.

Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, he stepped into the teahouse, and searched for Lady Xhai Zhia.

If he manages to find her.

Jonovan gives a polite bow and a simple self-introduction. "Greetings, Lady Xhai Zhia. I am the Clay-Mage."

I present Jonovan Wick.

Currently only the backstory is done. The individual components of the crunch are mostly done, but I still have to compile it into the stat block format.

I would also encourage the other applicants to do the same. Do you see any common motivations or other links between your PC and another that could make for an interesting team?

Oh yes, we all want to win.

Joking aside, nobody seems to want a particular artifact. I'm guessing we all wanted to avoid the dreaded Double Dragon ending.
