Jasmine's Story

As a child, Jasmine spent most of her spare time, and many hours when she should have been in school, playing in the old ship’s boats in Moon Base Thoth’s hangar bay. While most parents would have discouraged this behavior, Jasmine’s mother Rosemary encouraged it. “Sooner or later we’re getting off of this rock,” she’d tell nosy neighbors. “And we ain’t walking. When the time comes, Jasmine will be ready to fly.”

Jasmine’s mother had been in the Scout Service before the whole Imperium went condition critical. As a scout pilot, Rosemary Dalrath had been credited with a dozen first landings on alien worlds. It was a fluke of luck that she’d been idling at the Thoth depot when the incident happened. The base commandant put Rosemary in charge of the base’s two boat squadron, trusting the experienced pilot to keep the boats operational as long as possible.

Shortly after Jasmine was born, Rosemary started sneaking her onto shuttle flights and by the time Rosemary started letting her daughter take the conn, it was too late for the commandant to do anything to stop her. Most of Thoth’s other qualified pilots had drifted off to other employment and so many parts had been cannibalized from Boat Beta that it was no longer spaceworthy. Furthermore, everyone except Rosemary and Jasmine knew it was just a matter of time before Boat Alpha would also be stripped of parts more vital to the daily maintenance of the base than keeping an old boat flying.

Jasmine was in her teens when base mechanics finally ripped out Alpha’s fusion reactor. Base power was still sufficient to run simulations through the shuttle’s flight deck, so Rosemary had her daughter practice all of the drills she remembered from her days as a scout trainee. Yet it seemed like Rosemary aged quickly once the last spacecraft was grounded and she died when Jasmine was twenty.

It was at this time that Jasmine’s father entered her life. Rutger Dalrath was a crook, swindler, and racketeer. His only real talents seemed to be finding trouble and booze. How someone with Rutger’s reputation stayed out of the brig was one of Base Thoth’s ongoing mysteries. The old scoundrel found Jasmine a place in his gang where her deft hands, nimble feet, and quick reflexes proved to be valuable assets.

Connections

Ephraim Cole Ephraim and Jasmine met a little over a year ago when he was introduced to her by father Rutger. Rutger was always able to get hard to find parts or tools for Ephraim and took time to point Ephraim in the right direction when he had items he wanted to get rid of with little or no questions asked. Although he likes Jasmine, Ephraim doesn’t trust her very much.
