Spoiler:
Jampo's name literally translates as 'Gentle Thunderbolt'.
This name was granted to him at his coming of age ceremony at the Airbender Temple. It refers to his mercurial nature. While Jampo is a very gentle soul, and dislikes conflict, he is also fearless and unrelenting when forced into it.
Jampo's childhood was difficult, but no more so than all of the other single-parent children out there. His Mother (Grandmother? Don't want to make him the wrong age range?) was one of the ones who spontaneously demonstrated airbending abilities during Avatar Korra's grand adventures. But she decided not to train at the temple. His father left his mom and he when he was young, and Jampo still harbors some resentment, but was raised by a loving mother and was poor but proud. When he began manifesting airbender abilities as a pre-teen, his mother decided that he should do what she hadn't, and train at the temple. (This was partially decided by their financial situation, which was desperate. Not all were living an easy life even during Avatar Korra's term of service.)
Jampo's life at the temple was good. He was a good student, made more friends than not, studied hard and trained hard and played hard. If he wasn't the best at something it wasn't because he didn't try. And he was usually the more gracious loser. Some thought he was undedicated, some thought lazy, others thought he was a condescending jerk. But the eldest teacher saw the truth, as he had learned it dealing with Korra and his own children.
Jampo was both angry, and was deeply afraid of what might happen if he ever let it out. As a result, he is one of the most self-controlled airbenders ever to come out of the Temple since Avatar Aang. But he is still looking for his place in the world.
He earned his airbender tattoos early, a sign from the elder that he recognized Jampo's skill and control, and not coincidentally giving him A purpose in life, (if not his life's purpose). Find and train the new Avatar in Airbending.
