Appearance:
James is a rugged young man, used to enduring the harsh wilderness of northern Varisia. He is tall and muscular, a physique born of a highly active lifestyle, and his clothes are simple hides cut more for function than form. His hair is black and wavy, hanging loose to his shoulders, and his penetrating grey eyes sit nestled beneath an often furrowed brow. A thin pale scar runs from the bridge of his broken nose down along the upper line of his cheek, and his square jaw line is spattered with a hurriedly tidied mess of short cut stubble.

He appears before you wearing an exquisitely crafted backpack upon his shoulders, not in terms of form, but in function. Everything about it is designed to make carrying large volumes of equipment as easy as possible. Slung over his shoulders besides it rest a veritable arsenal of weaponry, a longbow, a sword larger than most men could lift, a long pole topped with a hammer and a spike, and hanging from the side of the pack is a viciously spiked flail. He wears a vest of scale male, and if a large wooden shield rests between his back and his pack, this is a man clearly well versed in the arts of battle.

Personality:
James is quietly confident man, deeply loyal to those he truly calls friends, but untrusting of those with more civilised backgrounds. He believes them to be fettered by their own self imposed assumptions and thus often incapable of following their hearts and doing what is truly right. Similarly, while James prefers to think of himself as a man of his word, this is more a decision based on the fact that he feels this is the right thing to do rather than any feeling of obligation towards the promise itself, and as soon as a promise violates his ideals it ceases to hold any weight for him. He’s not the kind to plan ahead, preferring to decide things impulsively, particularly in battle as he finds it more beneficial to keep his enemies on their toes.

Background:
James’ earliest memories are in the arms of his adopted mother, a medicine woman of the Shadde-Quah Shoanti clan. She tells him that he was found on the rocky shores of western coast, cradled to the breast of a southern woman who claimed to be his mother. She was half drowned and starving when they found her, but the medicine woman took pity on the wretched young girl and her infant child, and had them brought back to the tribe. By some miracle James was remarkably healthy, albeit hungry, but his mother was on the verge of death, and did not last long even under the medicine woman’s care. She told them few things before the finally passed away, but she was awake long enough to tell them her child’s name and beg the medicine woman to look after him, a promise the Shoanti woman solemnly vowed to keep. The only other thing James knows about his origins, is that before she died his mother told them that they had come from Sargrava far to the south, and that his father Robert Carmichael could be found there.

As an outsider James had a troubled childhood, but he proved to be a fierce warrior, which earned him at least some grudging respect from the other tribesman, particularly for his incredible resilience to physical punishment. However, there were still many young ones who resented his position as the medicine woman’s son, and it wasn’t until the boy was sixteen that he was truly accepted by his tribe. A group of the tribe’s younger warriors led by the chief’s son had gone out hunting by themselves, and in the recklessness of their youth had attempted to take on a huge boar. As the beast lashed out in fury and frustration at the group’s attacks the son of the chief was knocked to the ground, and the creature seeing his moment of weakness ran straight at the young man. However, before it could reach him James had jumped into the creature’s path, not only taking the attack, but somehow stopping the boar in its tracks, giving the other warriors enough time to slay the beast. James almost died from the injury he received that day, and was saved only by his mother’s relentless efforts, but he had earned the respect of his tribesman once and for all for his bravery and might.

Eventually though, the day came when James decided he had to discover the truth about his past, how he had come rest upon the shores of Varisia, and who was responsible for his mothers dangerous journey north. So promising his mother that he would do his best to return one day, he journeyed south to Cheliax where he caught a boat south to Sargrava.

Aspirations:
More than anything James wants to find his father and uncover the truth about his origins, and if the man turns out to be dead then at least discover what became of him. However, he has promised his adopted mother that he will do his best to return to the clan safely, and he fully intends to do so when he has accomplished his task.
