While rumors of giants gathering had long plagued the local area and had been cause for constant vigilance for the dwarven hold. Nothing aside from the odd raiding party or lone giant ever posed a problem. However, one day a large warband besieged the hold. There were less than 700 Dwarves in the fledgling hold, but over 800 orcs, with scores of giants aiding them laid siege to it. For nigh a weeks, the dwarves held the gates battling off several small skirmishes, until the giants began raining down boulders the size of 5 dwarves upon them. In a matter of minutes, the gate was in ruins, and the horde of orcs poured through along with the giants. The dwarven defenders fought in tight defensive units with heavy armor, the tide swept around them, but could not penetrate their formation. While on upper levels, the ranger corps loosed several volleys into the tide, felling several giants. However, as the giants made their presence known, even the stubbornness of dwarves could not hold together their formations. The giants plowed them apart, only the most grizzled unit of dwarfs manages to avoid being shattered. This unit, lead by Ivan’s father, would work as a rear guard and defend the retreating remains of the hold. Ivan had fought on the upper ramparts with his mother, raining arrows and axes, and hammers. He had stubbornly refused to fall back to the tunnel exits until everyone else had. He watched as a hulking giant slammed what must have been the trunk of an oak tree into his father. He saw his father stand up slowly and catch another blow with his shield. At this point, half the remaining defenders were being overrun, and Ivan’s mother forced him down the chutes to the rear exit tunnels. The last he saw was the largest’s giants club swing downward again. The shattered remains of the hold numbered about 150 dwarves. None of the unit of dwarven infantry that stayed behind as a rear guard made it. They fought to the last and died as true dwarves. However, that didn’t make the loss any better. The remaining dwarves scattered, some went to find homes in other Holds, the closest one being Glimmerhold and Kraggodan, some decided to go back and attempt to retake the hold. Still, a few others decided to simply move to the closest local town. Ivan and his mother would return to the Hold with the others a week later, prepared for a fight, but would find it empty. Everything smashed, tunnels caved in. Little was left intact. A message scrawled into the stone in common warned that any further encroaching into giant territory would be met with even worse than this. It didn’t take long for them to find the now decaying remains of the Ivan’s father Thrain. His shield, tattered, twisted, and nearly broken in half. His armor much the same. In his hand, he still held the shaft of his War-axe, the crescent blade bent and notched. They took him and his body away and gave it a proper dwarven send off. Ivan would never forget the giant that landed the felling blow. His mother told him to go to a dwarf by name of Zavar in Kraggodan. She told Ivan that she would meet him there in a few week’s time. She said she was going to track down the giant that killed Daine and, if possible, kill it. If not, she would return and seek aid. Ivan went the Zavar, but, weeks turned to months, and still his mother did not return. Eventually, he gave up hoping and, for a while, accepted her dead. Now, 5 years later, Ivan has come to a town named Trunau, for multiple reasons. First, he has heard rumors of his mother, and the trail leads to the area surrounding this town to a certain dwarf. Second, he needed money so he had signed on to guard a trade caravan headed there. Two birds one stone. He WOULD re-forge his fathers shied and armor. Just like he had reforged his War-axe. And he WOULD get revenge for his father. But first, he had to finish his deal, get to trunau, and hopefully find any leads towards his mother, or the giant and his revenge. And maybe, just maybe, he can find a new home. half a year has passed:
The people that train and spar with him in the commons have taken to calling him the mountain, in respect to his seemingly limitless stamina and his ability to stay stubbornly set in a spot despite their best efforts to move him. Few have landed a blow on Ivan, and those that did were unsure if it even phased him. Ivan holds a respect for Jagrin Grath and his sons, and in return Jagrin Grath has come to respect Ivan, enough, now that he has considered offering Ivan a spot on his patrol, after all, having a stable center-piece could prove useful if the patrol does run into trouble. Ivan is unsure of Agrit, the Dwarf married an orc. Well, a half-orc, but that still doesn't quite sit right with Ivan. He knows he shouldn't judge Sara for her race, but just something about a dwarf marrying her feels wrong to him. He has said so a few times, when he gets to drinking though he hasn't said anything in close to 4 months now, becoming more used to the thought. Another thing that just doesn't sit right with the dwarf about the people around here is that they burn their dead. Just makes his bones tingle at the thought. Other than that, Ivan has made a bit of coin working around the town as hired labor. Moving heavy objects or helping to pack or unpack things, or even to help in construction when he can. He has recently just in the past month spoken with Agrit and Sara about working with them at the clamor, after all, he knew more than a thing or two about smithing, and in return for helping out around the forge, he hoped that they would look into getting the materials he needed to reforge the broken armor and shield of his late father that Ivan carried with him. While nothing has yet been set to stone, the odds are looking good. Even then, he has already started offering to help them, and has even helped Sara and Agrit improve their armor smithing, oddly enough as well, Sara helped out Ivan by teaching him a few tricks that most dwarves didn't use.
