Isaias Yonatan is a tiefling originally from Dhartakli, although his mother's family (and his fiendish heritage) traces back to the oni of Kayusong. Isaias appears to be a Dhartakli human male in his mid-forties, with two small tusks jutting from his upper mouth, small black horns on top of his head, and white markings around his eyes. Unlike most tieflings, Isaias can see into the spirit world.

When he was very young, his father sold Isaias (his mother died in childbirth) to a general stationed at frontier province of the Draconic Empire. The general was stern, but fair, and allowed Isaias the opportunity to earn his freedom and study for the imperial civil service. Isaias's natural cleverness won him high marks on the exams, but his triple nature as a Dhartakli, a tiefling, and a former slave cost him a prestigious placement. He was sent to another province to serve as an scribe to the Chief Inspector of the regional Imperial Police.

Isaias used his natural abilities to commune with the spirit world to assist with investigations and earned favor with his boss. He also met Jiang, the son of a minor nobleman. The two fell in love and moved into a small cottage on the outside of town. When returning from nearly six weeks away on a case, Isaias found Jiang dead on the floor of their home.

Jiang had died of a stroke. There was no foul play, no crime, no mystery to solve. However, because of his spirit senses, Isaias was able to communicate with Jiang, who pledged to stay forever by his beloved's side. Isaias wears a ring that Jiang gave him around his neck on a silver chain under his clothes. He only takes the ring out when using his spiritualist abilities, as it helps him focus on the spirit world.

Isaias left the Draconic Empire, no longer having any ties to the area or the people. He traced his lineage to the oni of Kayusong, and wants to bring his intelligence, skills, and imperial training to help the underprivileged of the city. If he applied his keen insights to his own state of mind, he might suggest that he is deliberately putting himself in danger in order to reunite with Jiang permanently.

Isaias has an apartment in the Jade Turtle, a halfling tavern in the Pilings. Built up against the sea wall, the Turtle sits on stilts that keep it above the flood waters below. Having a thick coral wall affords it an ample fireplace, and the smell of spicy turtle soup wafting up through the boardwalks draws down a surprising number of dock workers. The family, the Parrucons, have insisted on giving him free room and board ever since he thwarted a kidnapping attempt on one of their five children by slavers, and they appreciate having a "big person" around to help keep the occasionally rowdy sailors and dock workers in line. Isaias is starting to develop a reputation as a helper and mystery-solver amongst the residents of the Pilings. Isaias has managed to keep clear of the Undertakers Guild, but as word of his supernatural talents spreads, he may find himself viewed as a potential ally or rival to the sect.
