About Idrassa Quill

Appearance:
hgt: 5’4 wgt: 118 lbs
eyes: Blue
hair: Red
age: 17

Idrassa is a petite woman with pale skin and large brown eyes. She is lightly built and moves with a formal grace. She dresses simply, but always accessorizes with a scarf or hood when she is outside of her apartment. Her eidolon is almost always summoned, and when she is Idrassa's face is patterned with red lines. But somehow she always brings it off as low-key stylish. Her scarf conceals a ring of angry red dragonmarks that encircles her neck. She gives the impression of someone in her mid-twenties rather than the teenager she is.

She is accompanied at almost all times by a 12’ long snake with feathery wings. The serpent, whom she calls Tweety, is decorated in a dazzling display of colored feathers and scales.

Personality:
Idrassa is someone who seems at home in all company. Her careful manners make clear she comes from breeding, but somehow even the coarsest common folk are pleased to break bread with her. She can drink ale and laugh at bawdy jokes or sip wine and discuss high politics. Idrassa seems never to change as she moves from one circle to another. She can be a good listener when another wishes to speak, tell charming stories (though rarely about herself) if others seem to want to listen, and draw out people who have something they want to say. And yet, every one of these permutations of her appears completely genuine and sincere.
Tweety does not speak, but always gives the impression of listening. She is ferociously protective of Idrassa, and has on occasion reared up and flexed her wings in display if she perceives a threat. Tweety and Idrassa appear able to communicate, and these confrontations have not led to violence.
Those questioning how Idrassa came to possess Tweety are simply told, ”Oh, she’s not my serpent. I’m her human.”
Privately, she is much less certain of her position than she lets on. Losing her home once has left a deep and traumatic scar, and she is terrified that she will have to run again. She is afraid to be too close to anyone but Tweety, and the latter does not have enough context in the world to offer Idrassa reassurance against her worst fears. In fact Idrassa has a significant store of gold set aside and, if not personal friends, at least a professional network into which she could tap in a crisis. But she feels neither wealthy nor secure, and is looking for ways to make more money and obtain greater security.

Background:
Katra d’Orien was a charismatic but otherwisefairly typical upperclass teen in passage. The fourth child of a prosperous family in a Dragonmarked House, Katra showed a talent for languages at a young age and was educated with the idea that she would be a negotiator for the House. The idea of such a career appealed to the girl, and she applied herself to her studies with at least a modicum of effort, though she always found time to enjoy the lifestyle the family wealth offered.

At the age of 14 she became feverish one afternoon, when her mother and she were the only family members home (not counting the servants, of course). They had been half-expecting this, as it was a normal part of manifesting a dragonmark in their family. So, Katra went to lie down while for a few hours. When her mother came in to check on her, Katra was feeling a bit better and asked if she had manifested a dragonmark. Her mother looked at Katra, her expression unreadable, then urged her to go back to sleep for a few hours. Katra did not feel tired, but complied.

When she came down to dinner a few hours later, her father and siblings stared at her in horror. A look in a nearby mirror left her gaping at her own image, unable to believe the harsh red tracery that worked its way down her skin below each ear and around her neck. She bore a mark, but not one of Orien or any other established House. She was an aberrant and, just as shockingly, it meant her now-absent mother was almost certainly guilty of miscegenation.

Her father promptly ordered her back to her room. Some hours later, she was brought before a hastily assembled Council. In proceedings that moved too rapidly for the stunned girl to follow, she was excoriated and ordered to leave the compound.

Her father was not there. She found herself walking down an aisle lined with Orien House members, some stone-faced, others inexplicably sneering at her. Her uncle grabbed her and shook her, spitting in her face and screaming that she had dishonored them. That was the most horrifying thing to her, and it was only hours later that she discovered the purse of gems he had slipped into her pocket. The note it contained was the only word of solace she ever received from her family. She memorized every word before she burned it, knowing what it would destroy her uncle if it were revealed.

After a cold and miserable night on the street, she left passage on the back of a farmer’s oxcart. At first she was not sure where to go, but she remembered from her studies that Orien had only a limited presence in Thronehold. She had no terribly coherent plan as to how to support herself or even to keep herself safe, but doing it somewhere where she could take a new name and keep her mark hidden seemed like the wisest course. She wove her way across the continent, avoiding luxurious or efficient travel in favor of keeping a low profile.

One morning she woke in the haystack where she had been sleeping to discover a small, brightly-colored snake nestled against her. Startled, she pulled back, and the creature looked up at her and calmly explained that Katra was hers now and she needed to learn how to rouse herself more gently. Katra was initially confused and afraid, but the snake – with its tiny feather crown and the nubs of wings – was so beautiful that she was captivated. Katra would never understand the bond between then, but gradually came to love the beast. The snake taught Katra her name, but it was simply a series of trilling whistles that were too much trouble to imitate. Katra took to calling her new companion “Tweety,” which the serpent eventually got used to.

When the pair arrived in Throneport, Katra renamed herself Idrasa Quill. Carefully dressing and moving in ways that gave people the impression she was older than her 14 years, she managed to start a rumor about herself that she was a failed apprentice scribe. The rumor prompted a number of the city’s poorer folk to come to her for help preparing documents at rates below those of the Scrivener’s Guild. These jobs did not pay well enough to support her, but as time depleted the funds from her carefully hoarded gems she built a background for herself on the street that offered other opportunities.

She moved into writing contracts and documents for tradesmen who could not afford a proper solicitor, and then into forgery. There was a substantial demand for documents that could allow the movement of people and goods between the wards, and Idrassa was surprised to find she had a talent for it. While she avoided the kinds of work that would draw down the ire of the authorities if discovered, she has managed to make a modest living for herself.

That was 3 years ago. Since then, Idrassa has gained a better understanding of the city and has worked her way into the good graces of many of its less savory folk. She has avoided aligning herself too closely with one criminal outfit or another, selling to all on similar terms and avoiding any work that could alienate one or another faction.

But Idrassa’s life has changed in other ways over those three years as well. Tweety has grown from an armlength thing that Idrassa wore as a scarf into a 12’ long monstrosity. Her wings are now quite large, and though Tweety does not yet fly Idrassa believes it is only a matter of time. It has suited Idrassa well to have such a protector on-hand, and the two are nearly inseparable. For her part, Idrassa has discovered that her Dragonmark gives her the ability to befriend others for a short time. And manifesting her mark seems to have carried other changes with it, including the ability to cast a few spells or even summon creatures other than Tweety.

Tweety has never been able to articulate to Idrassa where she is from or where she goes when dismissed, she just says that Idrassa is hers now and that is how things are between them. Idrassa occasionally wonders what the future holds for them, as over the years Tweety has begun to look increasingly like a Couatl. The implications of this are unclear to Idrassa, and Tweety demonstrates only ignorance – perhaps real, perhaps feigned – when asked.

Business has lately taken a bad turn for Idrassa. Rumors have begun to circulate that an Orien excoriate by the name of Katra is hiding in the city, and while no one seems to have connected those rumors to Idrassa it has left her hesitant to move too freely around the city. She is not sure exactly what would happen if her mark were revealed, but she knows it would be complicated.

Miscellaneous:
Her apartment is a single room in a rundown but safe and relatively comfortable building in Dock Ward. She has a sizable collection of tools used for forgery, but these do not normally leave her room. Now that she is on the run they are in Tweety's pack, on the theory that if she is searched by Wardens the incriminating tools can vanish into the Outside.

She keeps a packed bag in the closet of her simple room, ready to run at a moment’s notice.

Idrassa has a lovely singing voice, and in fact is classically trained in Draconic opera. She often sings these songs to Tweety, as the latter loves them. Normally very cautious about revealing personal information, Idrassa has not realized how distinctive such performances can be.

Idrassa occasionally works with more upscale clients, and has something akin to a scribe’s robe for those occasions (Scholar’s garb stats). She is always very careful to state that she is not a member of the Scribe’s or Scrivener’s Guilds, as the punishments for impersonation are still more serious than those for doing unsanctioned guild work.

Idrassa’s mother, Cellin d’Orien, has not been seen since the afternoon Katra’s mark manifested. Idrassa suspects her father is actually a man named Dolan d’Cannith, a marked House member who had been a regular visitor in their household during while Idrassa was growing up. Idrassa has no idea of his current whereabouts.
