Very new to the game, so bear with me if the answer to these questions are "hidden in plain sight." :)

I'm in the process of helping someone create a character with the Oracle class. A couple questions have come up:

1. As we're going through the different Mysteries, we were wondering if it was okay to alter the patron deities for certain Mysteries to fit in with that character's personality and back story? For instance, can we choose the Heaven mystery, but add/remove a deity to fit in with that character's dislikes/likes (i.e. add Shelyn to the list of deities for the Heaven Mystery)?

2. Additionally, how do the chosen deities for said Mystery actually impact the game, or are they more utilized as plot tools for the GM?

3. Does the PC get the benefits from said deities, listed in the "Gods and Magic" booklet?

My fiance and I, along with a close friend of ours, are interested in starting up a weekly Pathfinder game in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Both of us have never played any tabletop RPGs [not sure if the PF Adventure Card Game counts :)], but our close friend has some experience with D&D (not sure what edition).

We're really looking for someone with experience, either as a PC or as a GM. But, if you're new and looking to get into the game with us, that's fine too!

A couple clarifications are needed...

1. If Character A defeats a Henchman, and is then able to try and close the location the Henchman was in, can that player choose to wait for Character B's turn to come to that location and attempt to close it, without having to go through the entire deck?

2. Also, same question, but instead, assume Character A and B are at the same location when Character A defeats the henchman; can Character B then attempt to close on that same turn?

3. Last one; does the discard pile need to remain face-down, or can we cycle through it at our leisure, just to see what we've lost?

First off, I'm sorry if this question has been answered before. I have found many similar threads that "almost" directly answer this question, but nothing that made me feel 100% confident about it's answer.

When a player other then myself encounters something at a different location, can I use an item to help them out with the check, as long as the item doesn't specify "your check" or "your location?" Basically, use an item just like you would a blessing? Or, does the item need to specifically say "at another location" or "any character?"
