Experience Tracker:

Pride: Logic - The Heretic believes that his daunting intellect grants him the ability to understand and resolve every situation in the most efficient and effective manner imaginable. Characteristic modifier: +5 Intelligence, –5 Perception.

Disgrace: Destruction - Defeating a foe is never sufficient. Opponents must be utterly annihilated, their works destroyed, and their reputations laid waste. Opportunities to spread suffering, by any means, must be fully embraced; as mortal suffering may benefit the Ruinous Powers. Characteristic modifier: +2 Infamy, –4 Fellowship.

Motivation: Innovation - While uncovering lost knowledge is a worthy cause, it pales behind the glories of creating completely new forms of technology or psychic phenomena. This Heretic has embraced the ways of Chaos so that he might use its powers to create new tools and uncover information that was previously beyond the limitations of mortals. Starting Corruption: +2 Corruption. Starting Characteristics: +3 Intelligence. Starting Wounds: –2 Wounds.

Backstory:

Hephaest was born on Mars before the coming of the Emperor and Unification. His early life was with a band of dust scavengers, trying to survive by finding worthwhile salvage in the war torn wastes of Mars they could trade to the imposing forges for supplies to see another day. He tried to experiment with some of the intact items they found, and while still a child traded a piece of archaotech to a tech priest in exchange for an apprentice ship and a new life.

He was a low ranking tech priest in the service of the Fabricator General when the Emperor came. It was likely the most powerful experience of his life, and above all he remembers the disgust he felt. Disgust at the obsession of his fellows for the foolish notion of an Omnissiah, disgust at the way they rolled over for this invader, and disgust at himself for going along with it, being in the presence of what could only be a psychic glamer and yet still letting himself be overpowered by it and kneeling in service to the Terran.

He spent the Great Crusade in the forges of Mars, and while he never ran his own forge and stayed in the service of the Fabricator General, was skilled and rose to become a magos in time. The deep bitterness grew the whole time. His greatest ideas and inspirations had to be discarded for coming too close to the arbitrary restrictions from Terra or for being too radical for the hidebound fools around him. He was even considered reliable and boring, never skirting the edge while he desired to barrel over it.

He was excited to a degree unseemly for a techpriest when Mars through in its lot with Horus, and after dealing with the simpering fools who kneeled to Terra, turned his genius to greater things for a greater war. Abominable intelligences, warp infused combat servitors, uncountable horrors were forged by his will. His finest work was a machine spirit derived from a tortured psyker, still in concert with the warp. He was attempting to find a way to analyze the immaterium, but when he couldn't get useful results, he integrated his creation into his own brain.

The wondrous new insights calculated his best path was joining the armies of Horus on Terra. While he hardly participated in the fighting, he was well positioned to flee from Sol with the traitor legions when the Emperor was triumphant. Harried by pursuers and the desperate fellow traitors, the small war band he was with went into hiding. The Imperium was ready to crush it's enemies now, but their vigilance would falter in time, and he would awake. Terra would burn for the insult to him, the works of the impudent Emperor would be torn asunder, and Hephaest would finally begin his greatest work.

Personality:

To hear Hephaest talk, which he will, at length, he is a paragon of pure logic, unencumbered by base emotions and of peerless insight. To anyone who has actually interacted with him, he is incredibly vain and has a hair trigger temper, ready to squash any challenges to him, particularly in fields of technology, and still carries the scavenger's sense of desperation despite the weight of the centuries on him. To the Space Marines he serves, he is respectful out of first, recognizing they are more than human as well, and second, they are very dangerous and could easily kill him.

Appearance:

Hephaest hides his bulky form under the red robes of a Martian techpriest, asides from the servo-arm and mechandrites extending from it. Under the hood, his helmet displays an onyx mask, and his voice is a disturbing electronic rasp.
