Backstory:

Henris was born and raised in a Varisian clan that wandered from near Roderic’s Cove down towards Magnimar, then east to Korvosa, and back. Preferring the nomadic lifestyle, the caravan was constantly on the move. Growing up, Henris idolized his older sister, Correia, who was an incredibly talented singer and dancer. He didn’t have her talent for doing so, but he learned how to play the flute so he could at least provide some sort of accompaniment. Life in a Varisian caravan was enjoyable - no one was wealthy, but everyone had enough food, and when camping there was always storytelling and singing and dancing and performing.

When Henris was 12, the caravan camped outside of Sandpoint, and his sister chose to sneak away from the caravan and audition for a role in an upcoming opera at the Sandpoint theater. She was an immediate hit and cast in the opera, and so, as the caravan prepared to move on, she stayed behind, bidding her family farewell. Henris was disconsolate, for it felt as if he’d lost his best friend. He began moping and no longer playing his flute when the camp would stop for the night, instead taking to wandering about. At one of the campsites from Magnimar to Korvosa, away from any kind of town, hamlet, or farm, he wandered away from the caravan, not really paying attention to where he walked. Suddenly, his concentration was jarred by a crash of lightning. A powerful storm had come one while he wasn’t paying attention, and he had no idea how to get back to the caravan.

Blindly, Henris ran through the night, looking for shelter as the wind picked up, howling, and the lightning and thunder crashed while beating rain drenched him to his skin. A flash of lightning illuminated a hole hidden by some bushes, big enough he could take cover in, but not deep enough for any animals to use. He stumbled into it and collapsed onto his knees, remembering a short prayer his mother had taught him when there was a storm about. ”Almighty Gozreh, Father of Storms, shelter me from your wrath. Let me know no harm, and forgive the offense that has brought your wrath upon me.” He repeated that prayer, over and over, until at last exhaustion took him, and he fell asleep.

When he awoke in the morning, the storm was gone, and the sun shone. Water dripped from the leaves of the bush that had sheltered him onto a wooden circle tied onto a cord. The circle had a dripping leaf carved into it - the symbol of Gozreh. Taking this as a sign of His favor, Henris took the medallion and offered a prayer of thanks to Him, then put it about his neck and went in search of the caravan, asking Gozreh to guide him to his destination. It took most of the day, but eventually Henris returned to the caravans and was welcomed back. From that day forward, Henris worshipped Gozreh, praying to him daily.

Over the next few years, as the caravan traveled, Henris continued growing. He would visit his sister when they stopped in Sandpoint, although things had changed between them. Henris was still kind and trusting, but he was wiser, and less tolerant of crowds. Eventually, one year when they stopped in Sandoint, Correia was not there. Instead, there was a letter for him, telling him she’d gone to Kintargo, in Cheliax, to pursue her career in opera. Heartbroken yet again, Henris prayed to Gozreh, and had a dream of the ocean that night. The next day, he bid his family farewell, and took passage on a merchant ship bound for Kintargo, offering to work to pay for his passage. He had no experience sailing, but he learned quickly, and after a short time in Kintargo unsuccessfully trying to find his sister, he joined with the crew of another ship to head back north to Roderic’s Cove.

For several years, he would join the crew of a ship heading someplace he’d never been before, looking to experience new things. A priest of Gozreh was always welcome, for when the ocean grew rough, his prayers could calm Her fierce waves and Her gale winds. In the evenings, he would play the flute to entertain the crew and provide a respite from the doldrums of travel. Henris would usually only join a crew through one journey, joining another rather than take the return. Until he found himself upon the Gentle Breeze. He’d chosen the ship based purely on the name, but once on board, he immediately found himself attracted to Ailanna Hensho.

A half-elven woman who said her mother hailed from Tian-Xia, she was captivating for both her easy smile and her laughing demeanor. Henris fell hard for her, and she seemed to return at least some of the sentiment. For the first time, Henris stayed with a ship past a single journey, courting and wooing Ailanna. For two years, Henris was happy aboard the Gentle Breeze, thought perhaps he would stay with Ailanna until they both chose to leave. Sadly, however, it was not to be. A powerful storm came up while they sailed to Absalom, and all Henris did desperately to quell it failed. When it passed, the Gentle Breeze had survived, but Henris’s faith was shaken. That his prayers to Gozreh to quell the storm had gone unheeded made him think he had failed in his duties to his god. When the Breeze limped into Absalom, he took his leave of the ship. Ailanna, who had become first mate, did not wish to leave the Breeze, since she hoped to one day become the captain of her own ship. The two bid a tearful farewell, and Henris walked away.

Henris took passage on a ship to Magnimar, and returned to the caravan for a while to rethink his direction in life. After several months of journeying with them, when they were back near Magnimar, he had a dream. In it, he saw himself in a massive jungle, wild and untamed, where he saw a lake with crystal clear waters, a powerful river, roaring waterfalls, and life all about him. Before he awoke, he saw a single dripping leaf from a tree he could not identify. Upon waking up, he went into Magnimar with some of the other members of the caravan to purchase some supplies. After some careful questioning, learned that he’d dreamed of the Mwangi Expanse in Garund. It was clear to him that Gozreh was telling him to journey to the Mwangi Expanse. He returned to the caravans to again bid his family farewell, and then back to Magnimar, looking for a ship heading to Garund. He found Captain Kovack of the Jenivere, which would make its way to Eleder, in Sargeta. He offered his services and, after proving his knowledge of sailing, was accepted into the crew and told to be back in the morning to prepare to cast off.

The next day, while he was making his way to the ship, he saw a group of homeless people and gave them each a few coins to help buy some food and maybe warm clothing. A Sczarni lookout, seeing this, though that perhaps the Varisian man should be paying them some money, too. He told his gang, and the crew stalked Henris through the streets, planning to jump him and rob the Varisian of his valuables. Fortunately, however, one of them knocked over a barrel, and Henris saw him. Realizing what was happening, he took off running as the Sczarni chased him. Eventually, he was able to lose them in the maze of alleys near the docks, and got to the Jenivere just before call time. After being shown to his bunk, he prepared the ship to cast off.

That night, he was introduced to other passengers. He tried to get to know Iaena, since she was from another caravan, but she was incredibly aloof and rebuffed all attempts to get to know here. Instead, Henris befriended a gnome by the name of Gelik Aberwhinge, whose easygoing demeanor and storytelling meshed well with Henris’s Varisian background. Between the stories and the flute, the time passed, and after 71 days at sea, with stops in Cheliax, Mediogalti Island, The Shackles, and a couple of other settlements in the Mwangi Expanse, they should soon arrive in Sargeta, where Henris shall follow Gozreh’s visions into a wild and untamed jungle…

5 Min. Background:

5 points that capture the concept and story of the character:
Henris is a wandering worshipper of Gozreh, seeking the most beautiful wonders of Golarion
Henris was raised as part of a traveling Varisian clan who frequently moved all over Varisia
3. Henris came to worship Gozreh after becoming lost on his own and barely surviving a brutal storm.
4. Henris has been a sailor for the past 3 years, working on ships as a way to pay his way to new lands.
5. Henris has never been on a ship outside of Avistan before.

2 Goals
Henris had a dream of the Mwangi Expanse and himself walking through it, discovering great natural wonders, and is attempting to journey there so he can fulfill this dream.
Henris hopes to establish a temple at one of these holy sites, providing a destination for other pilgrims of Gozreh to journey to and witness the wonders of the natural world.

2 Secrets
While Henris’s main reason for joining the crew of the Jenivere was to journey to the Mwangi Expanse, he was also fleeing a group of Sczarni who tried to attack him in Magnimar. He avoids telling anyone, however, as he does not want the new Captain to think he’s a criminal running from the law or anything like that, especially in light of the prisoner they have locked in the brig on the ship.
A member of the Pathfinder Society overheard Henris telling his dream to another Varisian, and thinks Henris can lead him and other Society members to hidden treasure within the Mwangi Expanse.

People
Correia Flynn - Henris’s older sister, a talented dancer and singer, who left the clan a few years back to pursue fame and fortune
Ailanna Hensho - Henris’s first love, who he has not seen in over a year after he left the Gentle Breeze, a ship he used to crew on
Vilk Krens - A fellow crewmember from the Jenivere, this Chelish man took an instant dislike to Henris, but has taken no action against him due to Captain Kovack’s strict discipline.
Gelik Aberwhinge - Henris enjoys listening to the gnomish passenger’s stories, and finds him to be decent fellow.

3 Key Memories
The day after the storm, Henris remembers vividly seeing the leaves dripping in the sunlight, praying to Gozreh for safeguarding him from the storm, and feeling his connection to Gozreh blossom from there.
Henris’s first day on the Gentle Breeze, and the day he saw Ailanna.
The day he first saw the Mwangi Expanse when the Jenivere docked in Bloodcove, and the time he spent observing the jungle - though he did not enter it at the time.

Fear: Henris hates being trapped in cramped spaces or large crowds with no room to move (claustrophobia). It makes cleaning the bilges on a ship difficult for him, but he can’t do anything about that.

3 Negative Things
1. Callous - Nature has no morality and can be as cruel as any demon. Because of that, Henris willingly shrugs off many violent acts.
2. Wrathful - Just as a storm can rip up trees and destroy a village through it's wrath, so too can Henris become as wrathful as the storm if made angry.
3. Gullible - Henris is willing to believe the best of people, and assumes everyone is truthful unless presented with irrevocable proof.

RP Sample:

It was the evening of Henris’s first day aboard the Jenivere, and he had finished his duties for the day as the bell rang for the evening meal. Moving to the galley, he found therer were only two seats available. One was off by itself a bit, somewhat isolated, and the other by one of the passengers, a gnome he’d met earlier that day. Sitting, he said, ”Gelik, isn’t it? Tell me, are you enjoying your trip aboard the Jenivere thus far?”

The gnome said, ”Oh, most definitely. I enjoy my home in Magnimar, don’t get me wrong, but life is most fully experienced by seeing new places and sounds. Tell me, have you been with the ship long?”

”It’s my first voyage with the Jenivere, but I’ve crewed on other ships before - albeit never so far as Garund and the Mwangi Expanse,” Henris answered. Well, then,” Gelik said, ”have you ever been to Absalom?”

A shadow passed over Henris’s face as he remembered his parting with Ailanna, and he said, ”Yes, I was briefly in the city at the center of the world. I did not take much time there, however - such crowded places make me uneasy. I prefer the open sky and the country, where there is room to run and wander, and to enjoy nature.”

”Ah, yes, I notice you are a Gozran,” Gelik said, his eyes noticing Henris’s momentary sadness, but choosing to ignore it. ”They say traveling with a Gozran aboard ship brings blessed weather and swift winds. We cross close to the Eye of Abendego, and it is my fervent hope your god keeps that perpetual storm from sending us into Her embrace. Well, speaking of wide open spaces, let me tell you about the time I spent several months in the River Kingdoms. You want untouched wilderness, well, that area is full of it. Lots of failed kingdoms or settlements barely holding against that wild, untamed land. You can see all sorts of creatures…”

So the voyage went. Gelik would regale Henris and the other passengers and crew with stories, boasts, and quips, some of which were even true. Henris shared stories of his travels with the gnome, as well, and played his flute to entertain the passengers and crew at night. Henris grew to like the gnome, although sometimes he found his quips a bit rude. Still, Henris began making a list of other places to visit, should he ever decide to leave the Mwangi Expanse. He wasn’t sure he would, though. After all, Gozreh was calling him there, and he would not disappoint his god again.
