About Hansel Brixlemay AKA "Brix"
Once upon a time, let’s say 60 or 70 years ago, an up and coming Chelaxian merchant felt the need for a bodyguard. He felt this need because he had started receiving threats. Now, these threats were justified because Farnsworth Brixelmay was an unscrupulous man who used any means to get ahead. This included theft, arson, blackmail, false accusations against his competitors and murder. Not being a Thrune himself, Farnsworth aligned himself with the ruling family and became their eyes and ears in the city of Remesiana, gaining favor by reporting those not in full support of the ruling family or the diabolic order of Cheliax.
But this story is not about Farnsworth… it’s about his bodyguard. Now, Farnsworth didn’t want just any protection. Everyone had a brute who carried a big sword; no, he wanted something different, something no one else had, something that made a statement when he walked into a room. He had put a lot of thought into how to create the perfect bodyguard. A slave would be easy but a slave isn’t perfect. How could you ensure their loyalty and fidelity? How could you literally trust a slave with your life? That was the crux. So he decided to buy someone young and treat him better than a slave – oh, keeping their place known, for sure, but earning their trust. He combed the flesh trades for years before finding a little rock type thing. It cost Farnsworth a pretty penny but it was exactly what he was looking for. When he found the baby Oread everything fell into place. The slave peddler didn’t know its exact age but he knew it was a youngling so Farnsworth suspected it could be trained and eventually become devoted to him. He decided to give it a family name: Hansel, after his father’s favorite slave. Also, after careful thought, he decided Hansel should be trained in weaponless, hand-to-hand combat. He’d seen too many of his business rivals’ guards be denied their weapons and then lose their lives. Yes, Hansel would be trained by Asmodean monks.
As Hansel Brixelmay grew he became known as Farsworth’s Brick, or just simply Brix. He led a better life than most slaves, just as Farnsworth had drawn it up; he slept in the house, near Farnsworth’s room, not the slaves’ quarters out back; he enjoyed better food and clothing. After all, Brix had to have the refined appearance to accompany Farnsworth wherever he went. Brix also got a better education than the typical slave. But, true to his plan, Farnsworth never let Brix think for a second that he was anything more than a slave. For example, he always wore the Chelaxian licensed collar around his neck.
Brix was an excellent bodyguard, saving Farnsworth from harm many times, but he never bought into the Chelexian way of life. He knew slavery was wrong but was powerless to do anything about it and the whole demonic thing, he saw firsthand how that ruined peoples’ lives. Then, Brix got the surprise of a lifetime. Maybe it was a last ditch attempt to atone for his sins or maybe just thanks for his service, we may never know, but on Farnsworth’s death it was revealed that Hansel Brixelmay was to be freed – released from slavery and given 150 gold crowns to pursue his own life. Not wanting to let this opportunity be lost to bureaucracy, Brix left Cheliax as soon as the collar was officially, legally removed and went east, to Andoran. Now he had the means to fight slavery and to help people. But how to find those in need? In his travels he talked to Pathfinders and realized they traveled all around Avistan. Perhaps he’ll go to the lodge in Almas and see if they could use a bodyguard.
