Background

Hand remembers little of what came before. He only knows that one night when he was around three they came and took him in the middle of the night. They came a took hundreds of children from various villages and towns and brought them to the temple.

Those that had visible defects were the first to be weeded out. They were the first to be sacrificed that first night to the god of murder. Blood flowed by the gallon and the dark priests were pleased.

Only one hundred were kept as being felt fit enough to keep. They had no names, only numbers. Hand was number 13. It was the only way he was addressed for the next fifteen years of his training.

During those fifteen years the original hundred became less and less as candidates were found unsuitable for the training.

Those that were found unsuitable or tried to escape became lessons in biology and pain to the others. The dark priests would show how much a human body could endure and still survive. They demonstrated on live students the various methods of killing with a blade and how to make the kill last for hours or days.

When the number of students grew less then a dozen, the priests started yearly rituals of duels. Duels that only the victor was allowed to survive. Failure to kill a defeated victim meant both the students were sacrificed as unworthy of the mysteries the dark priests had provided. Their howls of pain as they were sacrificed slowly could be heard for miles and lasted days.

Finally, there was only one and that one was Number 13.

Upon, winning his final bloody duel, he was declared ready to be dedicated as a servent in the Cult of Murder. He was renamed Hand as all graduates were named. Every year the cult produced one Hand and that Hand was sold for hundreds of fresh children to train as students in the temple. It was a contract that lasted forty years or the death of the Hand. If the Hand lasted the forty years then they were expected to return to the temple and teach a new generation of students the secrets of the Cult of Murder.

Background meeting Inquisitor Kalistrade of the Ordo Xenos

Governor Jericus of a small backwater Imperial World, met with Inquisitor Kalistrade in his office.

Governor Jericus had purchased Hand just a year previously from the temple through agents. The children sold were considered by Jericus a small price to pay for a trained assassin that would never ask for any additional pay. He had a world teeming with children and orphans and a few hundred meant nothing to him.

The governor had not expected a member of the Inquisition to come to his office. To show his loyalty to the emporer he chose to offer Hand as a gift to Inquisitor Kalistrade.

"Watch this," Jericus said with glee like a child playing with a doll. "Hand, I want you to put your left hand on my desk. Now, Hand, I want you take one of those knives you are so proud of and get it out. That's a good man. Now, Hand, I want you to stab your left hand with the knife."

Hand did as he was told. He felt nothing. He was nothing but the Hand of the Emperor.

"Marvelous, simply marvelous, isn't Jericus? And I'm giving him to you, free, as a gift, to show my devotion to the great emperor."

When Inquisitor Jericus left the governor's office, he took the contract that controlled Hands fate for forty years and he also took Governor Jericus's head.
