About Greenly Baerdóttir

History:
The bastard daughter of a bastard daughter of a bastard daughter, Greenly was born into bad luck with the whole noble thing.

Greenly’s grandmother was the result of a tawdry affair between a Basri woman and an elven diplomat, and it was only by the pleas of the woman and her sisters that their father did not toss her and her child out into the streets. She was allowed to raise the child in the home, as a Basri, but when her brother inherited the house, he exiled them to Oppara. At least he had the generosity to not remove their meager titles.

Her grandmother (either a lady or a dame, Greenly could never remember which), fell madly in love with a member of the Ulfen Guard, Baer Bjørnson, and although they did not marry, she still gave their child his name, calling her Baerdóttir in the tradition of the Ulfen people. Her nephew, heir to the Basri name and now ruler of their house, saw this as a deep insult, and cut all financial support to this unfortunate branch of the family, leaving them destitute and unable to afford the marriage they desired. It was not long after her mother’s birth that her grandmother died.

Greenly’s mother (half-elf, half Basri, half Ulfen by Greenly's math) was raised solidly in the Ulfen way of things, but her Taldan half (quarter?) was not to be ignored. She wanted desperately to prove herself worthy of her cousin’s acceptance, to be a Basri in name and right, to have more than just her worthless hereditary knighthood. Following her father’s lead, she joined the Ulfen Guard, hoping that the honor given by having a huscarl as a relative would be tempting enough to reinstate her as a Basri.

After a decade of service, she nearly got her wish: her cousin’s son, now the ruler of the house, was particularly eager, as long as she was perfectly respectable. More than that, he was deeply in the good graces of one Maxilar Pythareus, and had sway enough to arrange for her promotion. After generations of sadness and disappointment, things were lining up nicely.

And then her mother went and got knocked up by some Garundi sailor man. Her cousin’s son offered her a choice: abandon the child and continue onto a promising military career with the full support and recognition of the Basri family or keep it and go without.

She kept it. Strings were pulled and favors requested and Pythareus himself dismissed her from service. Without a place to stay or a way to support herself and her soon-expected child, she threw herself at the mercy of her relatives, a family she had never known but through stories and letters.

Her cousin’s son took pity on her, allowing her to stay and raise her child among the family. But though she may have a title, she and her spawn were not Basri, but Baerdóttirs, bastard children with no name. They would be servants in the house, and her daughter would receive all the accommodations and education deserved of a Basri, as long as she did her part in service, and knew she was lesser.

Nothing more than a mutt, barely anything.

Greenly was neither exceptionally bright nor skilled at very much, but she received strict and stringent education, learning to speak, read and write not just Taldan, but two of the languages of her forebears, as well as the tongue of the First Folk. Her mother desperately wanted her to possess some magical talent, but while she had some minor affinity for scrolls and wands, the most actual skill she could muster up was tricks, and being real good at whispering.

Swinging a sword, though, she was real good at that. The Basri family were ambassadors to Kyonin, and had received many gifts from the elves over the years, including a number of curved blades. At her request, she was trained extensively with all manner of weaponry, including these self-same blades. That was her one real talent, being big and strong, and able to take a hit.

She trained for years to volunteer herself as an Ulfen Guard, and reclaim the honor taken unrightfully from her mother, but when she turned 18 and presented her sword, they claimed she was not Ulfen enough to ever truly be a huscarl. However, if she could first prove herself a soldier, maybe they would let her follow in the steps of her mother and grandfather. And so she set off to do so.

She found herself in the employment of Senator Trant as a mercenary, mostly just being big and imposing, but on occasion, called upon to draw her weapons. She was brought along to guard the Senator at the Exaltation Gala, but in the middle of said Gala, his daughter Malphene found herself accosted by thugs and Greenly was ordered to protect her for the rest of the night.

It was not until later she would truly become an agent of Martella Lotheed.

Appearance:
Greenly is, well, unique. Attractive, certainly, but odd looking. She is tall and gangly, all arms and legs, with big knobby knees and elbows, all further accentuated by her thin, boyish frame. Her distant elfish heritage shows itself plainly, distinctly, but curiously, mismatched eyes and ears, one eye blue, the other violet, and both her ears long and elfin, but one pointing up, the other bent out to the side. She has dark brown skin and thick, straight black hair that she typically pulls back in a braid. Almost always she is smiling, a sweet smile but a too-wide one nonetheless, and her teeth are neat and evenly stacked, surrounded by full, voluminous lips.

Personality:
Greenly is dumb, but happy. Optimistic, even. She loves gossip and eagerly shares what she knows with as many people as possible, but she’s not incapable of keeping a secret. Certainly, she is charming, but many people find her a bit grating.

She is a dependable confidante, always willing to listen and lend a shoulder to cry on, and perfectly able to be serious when needed. However she's not quite as good with the advice giving, as she has a hard time drawing the lines between "unconnected" pieces of information.

When she fights she fights alongside the spirits of her Ulfen ancestors, and nothing brings her more pride than to feel, truly, like she deserves to be among them.
