The suggestions that you guys have given are very interesting. I will explore them to see how it goes and try building up on each of them. They are very different, indeed.

Thanks for the tips! ;-)

BTW does no 'heavy spellcasters' mean no druids planning to engage in melee, for example? And how long duration does a buff need to be to be allowed in advance?

If the druid could handle it in melee with no extra rounds for buffing, I don't see why not. But I am almost sure he wouldn't be allowed to use his animal companion. The duel is intended to be resolved in melee fashion, with no spellcasting only allowed (like encasing your opponent in a magic wall then casting spells at will).

The buffs that could be allowed are the ones people cast on themselves every morning with the duration of a day or more. The buffs that are not allowed are the ones with rounds or minutes duration, because they wouldn't be allowed to cast it beforehand. If they used a contingency, maybe. I am not fully aware of the possibilities and whether the dm would allow them.

The duels would probably have judges of lawful good deities (there is a cleric npc which is likely to be the master of the arena), so I expect them not to allow too many preduel advantages. That wouldn't be fair in their scrutiny.

The dm plays kind of a storytelling social game. We know each other for decades, so it has very few hack n slash situations. That's why I dont mind if my character is not the super dragon/beast slayer of all. The roleplaying interactions with humanoids will be intense. Even the duels would probably have a great scenery and social interaction involved.

Hi, guys.

This is my first post here. Generally I read what you say about the game.

I'm gonna create a character and I think the funniest way to play it would be a warrior who challenges people to 1 on 1 melee duels. :-) I want the character to be a specialist in this kind of duel, focusing heavily on it and dumping the rest. Here are my goals for the build:

- 35 point buy
- only core races allowed
- must be built to be ready by 20th level.
- 880000 gp for items approximately.
- all aonprd or d20pfsrd content allowed.
- will challenge mostly humanoids to his duels (so, all combat maneuvers could be possible)
- no worries about facing heavy spellcasters (like wizards), because they won't be challenged.
- the duels will be mostly to the death or until someone is dropped below 0 hp. There is the possibility of a magical arena in the game where the one who would take the final blow is magically saved and the duel is over.
- the duels would probably start from a short distance with no rounds for prebuffing allowed (that wouldn't be honourable). As soon as the fight begins, if a character wants to cast a buff there are no restraints. Prebuffs would be possible only if they had a very long duration and were cast before the challenge was made.

The options are so vast I really have no idea which class/combination would be best. A swashbuckler inspired blade parrying and riposting? A barbarian going full aggro? A samurai? A tetori monk, a strangler brawler or a maneuver master monk? Is magus as powerful as people say?

From the feats that could be useful I think desperate battler seems to fit in most cases, the others depend on the class.

I know every build will have it's flaws and I'm aware it is impossible to cover it all. Anyway, I'm looking for a character that could win the highest percentage of his duels. That would certainly be very fun!

Any tips for this old AD&D player and a newcomer to Pathfinder? ;-)

Thanks!
