Character History:
Gideon's parents, Quinton and Deliana Derexhi, are lesser known scions of the Derexhi family. The couple was struck by a case of wanderlust when they were first married, though, and so spent several years wandering Varisia. However, when it was discovered that Deliana was with child, the two decided to return to the land of their origin. The big city no longer suiting their tastes, they instead moved to one of the smaller holdings of Magnimar’s expanding sphere of influence: Sandpoint. Ultimately, the couple had two children, daughter Alleria and son Gideon.
Despite their mutually-agreed upon early retirement, the pair did remember fondly the adventuring life, and this love of the road was something they spoke of often to their children. As a result, their wanderlust found fertile soil in the imaginations of their kids, the two often fantasizing about going off on their own adventures, fighting the unknown things that go 'bump' in the night as their parents had before them. Harrowings, another tradition brought from home, also seemed to indicate that the children also had some special destiny awaiting them. Gideon and his older sister made fast friends with the people of Sandpoint, and though the young man made friends easily, he was particularly fascinated by Shalelu Andosana. Her experiences in her travels drew him in and he spent as much time as he could talking with the elven woman about her adventures, daydreaming about going on adventures of his own and even going so far as to learn the language of her people from her. Alleria left home shortly after her sixteenth birthday, eager to get out on the road and experience the traveling life that their parents had, ultimately finding a home in the nation of Alkenstar. She wrote Gideon frequently, stoking his own imagination with stories of the strange foreign land. Shortly after Gideon's sixteenth birthday, he left home for to get a Harrow reading. It was there that his fortune was told and the Harrower discerned that some great future was in store for Gideon, though she couldn't tell him what that destiny might entail. Newly invigorated, Gideon left the harrow reading in high spirits, when a glint in the sky caught his eye. When he reflexively turned his head to look at it, his vision exploded with light, the sudden over-stimulation causing him to faint immediately. In the intervening years, Gideon’s admiration for Shalelu had gone from a child’s fascination to a desire for something deeper, though he was shy of admitting so, despite his natural charisma with other women around him. Perhaps it was because she’d known him since he was just a boy, but regardless, he couldn’t bring himself to have that the same confidence when she was around. He woke up at home, unsure of how long he'd been out, barely even registering where he was. His parents were there, of course, doting and clearly worried about what had caused his collapse...when he realized that his blurry vision was not clearing as the fog of sleep cleared from his mind. Slowly, the truth dawned on him: he was nearly blind. To begin with, he despaired over this turn of fate, convinced that the harrower he'd consulted had been wrong, that he was now condemned to a fate of obscurity. As the months passed, though, he grew accustomed to his condition, and Gideon began to realize that the bright light had not just shut his physical eyes...it had opened his mental one. He began seeing strange things in his sleep, split-second glimpses of things that he would later realize were events yet to happen or that had happened long, long ago, and began turning his attention to developing those abilities as opposed to his combat prowess. There was a strange sense of purpose guiding his efforts, feeling as if he were finally on the path that would lead him to his great destiny. As he grew older and more mature still, his affection for Shalelu didn’t abate, but only grew stronger, and though he was still somewhat shy around her, his teenage awkwardness was (mostly) left behind…though he still hadn’t yet gotten up the gumption to really attempt a serious relationship with the beautiful elven woman. Finally, nearly four years after Alleria had left, Gideon’s own wanderlust could take no more of the fixed lifestyle he’d been leading. A caravan that had only recently departed for more northern lands, one carrying the proprietress of the Rusty Dragon and several companions…one of whom was the object of his affection, was the final push he needed. It took him only a moment to make up his mind; packing what few possessions he owned, he took up the chase, setting off after them on the first caravan going that direction and hoping that he would, before too long, manage to catch up with those who had already begun their journey. Character Appearance/Personality:
Gideon is a decidedly handsome young man, shoulder-length hair the same deep black hue as a jet, eyes a deep, rich green. He is taller than the average human at 5'11", though his build is no more than is normal for one of his race. His voice is a rich, smooth baritone, usually spoken in quiet tones. Gideon's personality is decidedly low-key, finding it difficult to open up to others despite his natural charisma. He is very optimistic, though, believing strongly in some greater destiny he has yet to discover. |
