Liberty's Edge

I was wondering if we were allowed to reference book names in OGL products. For example, would it be okay list an item by name (but not what it does) and it's source and page number (A literal example of what I'm talking about would be something like the following: Gloves of the Uldra Savant (Frostburn 11) (12,700 GP)). No rules text would be presented outside of the item's GP value (which, may in itself be a breach of the OGL, I'm not sure).

The only part of the OGL that mentions anything like this is section 7 (Product Identity) which has this to say:

"OGL wrote:
You agree not to Use any Product Identity, including as an indication as to compatibility, except as expressly licensed in another, independent Agreement with the owner of each element of that Product Identity. You agree not to indicate compatibility or co-adaptability with any Trademark or Registered Trademark in conjunction with a work containing Open Game Content except as expressly licensed in another, independent Agreement with the owner of such Trademark or Registered Trademark. The use of any Product Identity in Open Game Content does not constitute a challenge to the ownership of that Product Identity. The owner of any Product Identity used in Open Game Content shall retain all rights, title and interest in and to that Product Identity.

Now I obviously wouldn't be saying that what I'm working on is compatible with the D&D 3.5 (probably just something simple like 3.5 OGL Compatible), but I don't know if I'd be able to use anything outside of what's expressly provided in the SRD without risking legal repercussions.

One of the reasons I ask, is that I'm coding a treasure generator that spans many books (core and otherwise) and I'd like to make it available to more people than just myself. I know that the site Crystal Keep has all kinds of information onsite (their Feats Index, for example, gives feat name, source, prerequisites, and even an overview of the what the feat does) but I don't know where they stand legality-wise by doing that.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Got my copy of PFRPG in the mail today (yay!) and was reading through it, only to discover about ten pages in a row that we pretty badly crinkled up (like someone partially folded them back ontop of eachother then closed the book on 'em).

The pages are still readable; but it's definitely not pretty to look at.

Still, an awesome product and worth the money, I think. Hopefully this is just a fluke.

Admittedly most of us are fond of the Pathfinder line of products (be it the Adventure Paths, the setting, or the RPG), however, there has to be something that makes us like them so much.

That's what this thread is for. What about the Pathfinder line has truly drawn your enjoyment of the products?

---

I'll start.

I've been on the receiving end of the Adventure Paths since the beginning of Curse of the Crimson Throne (a birthday present from my dear old mum was her offering to pay for a subscription until they switched rules sets) and I've enjoyed them greatly. They've been my only true experience with Golarion (I intend to remedy this once I get a job) and I've enjoyed them greatly since receiving my first issue.

However, there is one issue in particular that made me look at it, tilt my head a bit, reread the passage, and think to myself 'man these writers know what the hell they're doing.'

That passage? Found in issue 19 (Howl of the Carrion King) is as follows:

"Howl of the Carrion King wrote:
As the PCs approach, the cleric stands and turns toward them, a friendly smile marking his dark-skinned, handsome face. “Welcome…” he says with a grin. Then his features seem to melt away, leaving a hideous skeletal face garbed in a grubby, fire-stained robe. “…to my church,” he finishes.

Just think about it for a second. Imagine in your mind, what the PCs would be seeing as this occurred. 'Epic' was the word one of my players used to describe it when I read the description to them.

This short paragraph cemented my love for the Paizo's AP line and has truly embodied the truly awesome materials that I expect from them on a monthly basis.

I don't suppose we could get a few general thread flags (just for flagging the OP or whatever and moving on)?

Something like 'edition warriors are crapping all over this thread' or 'this thread has devolved into idiots trolling each other' would be most helpful as of late.

I don't really believe any one poster should be flagged in the above cases as it's often several guys arguing back and forth like idiots over the span of several pages (and boy would that be a LOT of flagging).

Building on that, could we possibly get a 'trying to start an edition war' flag?

Liberty's Edge

Since it has yet to ship, I don't suppose I can have the PFRPG discount applied to this order?

When you're in the main messageboard area the little box to the left of the screen (Browse) has two links to the Archives.

Here's a link to a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

No it's not about when the site will be back to functioning. :p

Actually, I have a question about your on-site treasure generator (that I happen to love to itty-bitty-bits). I was wondering if it would be possible to eventually offer a downloadable version that doesn't require an internet connection to use.

If it's not possible I'd understand, of course. I'm just curious. :D

Cheers and thanks for any response,

Got the idea for this one from a similar thread over in Pathfinder General.

Anyways, the premise is quite simple. Just list a few (or as many as you wish) of the houserules you typically run your games under.

I s'pose I'll start with a couple of my own:

.:Combat:.

Critical Hits and Fumbles: Both the critical hit deck and critical fumble deck will be used in play. The player will be allowed to choose whether he wants to draw from the Critical Hit Deck or just take the damage multiplier from his weapon; enemies will always draw from the Critical Hit Deck.
Damaging Turning: Turn undead deals 1d6 point of damage per cleric level to all undead in range. Undead are allowed a will save (DC 10 + 1/2 cleric level + CHA modifier) for half damage. Improved turning increases the damage from a d6 to a d8. Rebuking functions as usual.
Massive Damage: There is no massive damage threshold.

.:Feats:.

Dodge: Dodge now grants a flat +1 dodge bonus to armor class. You no longer need to declare a target for dodge.
Improved Critical: Now adds a flat +2 to a weapon’s critical threat range (ex. a longsword goes from 19-20/x2 to 17-20/x2); stacks with the keen weapon enchantment (see the Gear section below).
Improved Turning: Improves turning damage from a d6 to a d8. Rebuking is affected as normal.

.:Gear:.

Armor: Armor now no longer reduces your move speed. Armor that weighs more than 100 pounds reduces your move speed as normal.
Magic Weapons: An enchanted weapon gains a bonus to its damage rolls equal to double its enchantment bonus instead of a bonus to damage rolls equal to its enchantment bonus (ex. a +3 spear gains a +3 bonus to attack rolls and a +6 bonus to damage rolls).
Weapon Enchantment, Keen: Now adds a flat +1 to a weapon’s critical threat range (ex. a longsword goes from 19-20/x2 to 18-20/x2); stacks with improved critical (see the Feats section above).

Okay, my New Years resolution for this year was to get published. I'm actually thinking on self publishing a small (like 32 pages or so) d20 splatbook and I have some questions that I figured I'd ask here 'cause there are a LOT of published authors that post on these forums.

Anyways, onto the questions.

First Question: The OGL, I'm not sure exactly how to apply it. I assume that this:

Is the correct version to use. So what do I do with it? I know that it has to be in my project and I intend to plop it in at the end; but how do I go about declaring what is and isn't open game content? Can I just say something like "All content in this book except for X, Y, and Z is open game content that is free to use?"

Second question: Lulu.com. I'm thinking on using them as from what I understand they're well received by a lot of folks. So my question is, are they as free as they say they are? I know that they take 20% of the value of everything you sell, this doesn't bug me; but are there any other fees?

Second question part two: How quickly do they pay you? I've read on their site that normally pay is levied every 160 days but that they 'front' the money to their publishers. How has this worked for anyone with experience using them?

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to answer my questions, I'm sure I'll have more of them as time goes by. :)

Cheers,
-Gene

I'm seeing posts in the updates but when I go to look at them they're not there. I think that the forums are out of sync again.

EDIT: And now that I've posted another thread this one appears. *sigh*

EDIT EDIT: And now I see in another thread that Gary knows about it. Sorry to have bugged. :p

I'm wondering if there are any other DF players floating these boards. I just started playing it seriously (I'd tried previously but could never wrap my head around the game) within the past week and I'm enjoying myself a great deal.

For those who have never heard of it, Dwarf Fortress is an ASCII (think Rogue in terms of graphics) based strategy fortress builder with an RPG mode on the side. It's learning curve is incredibly steep (I'm not kidding. I've seen straight walls that were less steep than the learning curve in this game) but once you've gotten the basics down the game becomes insanely fun to play.

I'm going to say right off that this game is not for everyone, you have to micromanage a LOT of stuff (you have to make individual beds for your dwarves, individual tables, et cetera) but after you've gotten the bases covered it runs itself fairly well. Of course, you'll likely always be keeping busy doing one thing or another (nothing beats diverting a river to drown a group of goblins attacking your fort).

All-in-all I recommend this game highly for someone looking for an incredibly indepth RTS/RPG who doesn't mind ASCII graphics and is willing to invest in the learning curve.

Here's a few relevant links for those interested:
Main Website
- For downloading the game, obviously :p

Dwarf Fortress Forums
- Very friendly community; some good stories too

Dwarf Fortress Wiki
- Use it. Love it. It's chock full of incredibly useful information

Your First Fortress
- A quick-start guide for first-time players; I highly recommend using it your first time playing

How to Correctly Start Fortress Mode
- A really good starter guide; it covers a lot of the basics - very helpful

---

I should also mention that this game is incredibly graphic. Here's an example of what a combat with a Giant Leopard looks like in 'Adventure Mode" (I began combat by throwing a chunk of ice at the thing's head - I luckily hit; notice how I spent a good portion of the fight on the ground 'cause the thing actually knocked me down!):
Screenshot

That's not all, though, in Dwarf Fortress mode (that'd be the RTS portion of the game) various horrible things can happen. For example, if your dwarves are starving you can slaughter their pets (even kittens and puppies!) for food. Other, more horrible things can happen as well (more so in Adventure Mode than anything) such as the massacre of towns (including women and children) and the stealing of babies (goblins do this often in Fortress mode - It's annoying).

Anyone else catch this little Castlevania reference in the most recent issue of Pathfinder?

Also:
Wicked issue guys, I love the Umbral Dragon! Though I do have a question as well. A lot of the monsters in this issue have 'elite' next to their names. What does this mean?
