Gellius was born into a large family with two older brothers, one older sister and one younger sister. He grew up with all the benefits of wealth, receiving extensive tutoring and formal training at the family manor in Corentyn, where he has lived his entire life. As adulthood drew near, he spent a few years working in the family businesses and had mild but not spectacular success.
As his twenties approached, his father began pressuring him to enlist with the Order of the Chain. Although wealthy and respected, the Tauranor family lacked true power being newcomers to wealth and with no ties to house Thrune or to the church of Asmodeus. Gellius’s father saw sending his youngest son off to join the Hellknights as a way to boost the family’s legitimacy within Chelaxian high society.
Although he trained doggedly for two years, Gellius was Always more comfortable in light armor and preferred a more agile, manuveurable fighting style. Never comfortable with the heavy armor and rigorous discipline for which the Hellknights are known, he was never granted even provisional membership in the order, soon being discharged into service with the Castellan.
He worked in administering the citadel for a few more years and gradually came to see the worst of the Hellknight’s devotion to Law at all costs. His disillusionment grew to the point where he could no longer serve in good conscience and he parted company with the Hellknights at the age of twenty four (six months before the campaign commenced).
Although seen as a mild failure, his family remain on good terms and he could have returned to a life as a minor member of a prosperous merchant family. However, during his time under the Castellan, he learned of the existence of Citadel Altaerain, including hints that the title to the castle had lapsed and was technically available for any to claim, providing they could win the blessing of the nearby town.
Armed only with the optimism of talented youth, Gellius resolved to travel to Breachill to try and persuade the townsfolk to constitute their own martial order, based on the precepts of good rather than law. He has no interest in leading – seeing himself as an advisor to the throne. It was during his research into the distant town that he learned of the Call For Heroes.
His plan is to join the Call for Heroes, win the acclaim of the town council and to identify someone to help found an order of local protectors in the new, renovated citadel.
