![]() "Commander said bandits are our main priority. Figuring out what those blundering fools did is secondary. If we're lucky both end up being the same and the bandits killed them or took them prisoner." She then turned to Shattertooth, "Now get your cat to use his nose. There must be a scent trail." She then turned to her commanding officer with a somewhat pleasing look. She couldn't order him to let his wolf help but she hoped he understood. Don't forget your animal companions get their own Perception checks and have Scent. ![]()

![]() Gara simply nodded at the orders and then continued grabbing her last few things before going out the door and heading for the meeting place. While she made her way to the gates almost all eyes were averted the moment they detected her. It made her crack a smile. In the first weeks they spat at her feet. The only orc that dared spit in her face was now called 'One-Eye'. No, this mix of disgust, fear and a little respect was much better. Once at the gates she salutes the other commander and shakes her head at Grung's retort. The big lug would never learn. ![]()

![]() Gara was a bit of an oddball at the keep. She was second in command of the Black Sword, which got her a lot of respect. She also was a half orc, which meant almost all other orcs despised her. Together this meant that the keep was an incredibly safe place for her as, outside her own regiment, she was almost entirely ignored. The only way you'd realise she'd pass is that the soldiers made way for her. Whether that was out of respect or because disgust wasn't clear and it didn't matter. While they others laid back and relaxed she was busy performing maintenance on her equipment. She had already tested and readjusted the string on her bow, had checked the fletchings on her arrows and was now checking her breastplate for imperfections.

![]() I must say, I never looked at called shots before but they sound fun and quite fitting for my character. They also make we want to pick up Heal to improve Gara's knowledge on anatomy. I do know Heal isn't a background skill but one of the skills I already had is so I can swap those. ![]()

![]() That trait sounds nice, but could you explain it so I understand it correctly? Specifically which penalties do you mean and does the +1 keen mean I increase my crit range by 1 (as in the x3 on my bow becomes 19-20/x3)? As far as skills go, do we actually have someone trained in Heal? ![]()

![]() The question then becomes whether or not crafting anything other than pure alcohol would be considered alchemy in the first place. I'd dare say there are plenty of arguments for both sides. For my own 5 remaining background skill points I'm leaning towards either Profession (Herbalism) or Lore (Human Combat) to make full use of my trait. On a side note: When talking ultimate skill monkey, I dare say a Phantom Thief Unchained Rogue gives any and all Bards a run for their money. Purely on the skill front of course. ![]()

![]() Strictly speaking Craft (Alchemy) only allows you to make pure alcohol, not alcoholic beverages. I guess you could call it really strong and pure vodka. Profession can do more though, you only have to look at the ship rules for instance to know Profession (Sailor) helps you sail a boat beyond just making money sailing.

![]() Hmmm, I'm not quite sure where to put the other ranks then. I could put them anywhere as I already had Craft (Bows) and I could "swap" those for the background ranks but I'm not sure where else to put them. As for providing food out in the wilds, that's actually covered by the Survival skill. ![]()

![]() The negative one sounds very reasonable and fitting but too be honest I'm not quite sure what Gara's positive trait would actually do. The way I read it it's basically +2 to Knowledge (Local) and/or Knowledge (History) but only where they concern tactics and fighting styles employed by humans. Can't think of any other check relevant to either of those things. As for the Background skills, it's 5 total? They'll go to Knowledge (Engineering) then. Already have my bow-related craft skill. ![]()

![]() If your goal is simply to use Cha for all, take Steadfast Personality at 3. That way you use Cha for will saves instead of Wis (you do still get any Wis penalty so no dumping). Oh, and Sidestep Secret only does AC and Reflex, just like Prophetic Armor from Lunar. It's Nature's Whispers from Nature that does AC and CMD. You still need Dex for ranged feats so that specific Oracle will still be a crappy thrower. ![]()

![]() That could work. An easier option would be picking a race without a Cha penalty and pick up Divine Fighting Technique - Desna's Shooting Star. Now both attack and damage come from Cha and just need Dex for feats.
As for backup, I'd be looking at a living bulldozer. At 4 he'd have 2 levels of Siegebreaker Fighter and 2 levels of Armored Hulk Barbarian. The concept is based around bullrushing and overruning. In the end he'd aim for 5-6 levels of barbarian and 14-15 of fighter. All he'd need is strength and constitution. That said, I do not intend to need to use him. As far as posting goes, I'm fine with 1/day. That said, I do dislike posting for the sake of meeting a requirement. Posts like Gara twiddles her thumbs as she has nothing better to do add nothing and there are bound to be moments when not all characters are involved or involved to the same degree. ![]()

![]() This is for both Grung and Shattertooth: Have you guys seen the Butcehring Axe? It's an exotic weapon but at 3d6 base damage I'd say it's pretty much worth it. Gara thinking too much by Orc standards would be a fitting thing. She spend her early years among humans and as such still mostly thinks like a human. I could see her trying to bond with Guruka over both being women but I suspect that might not have gone over too well. Gara would feel some kinship with Shattertooth. After her father died due to wounds sustained while freeing her from slavery she spent several years on her own in the wilds. She more or less spent her teen years living on her own. She also carries her father's ring on a cord around her neck and any trying to mess with it would have found out how fierce she actually is. As far as feats go, I'm looking at Improved Snap Shot, Combat Reflexes, Weapon Specialization, Point-Blank Master, Deadly Aim, the Overwatch Style line, Manyshot and feats for both Improved Armor and Weapon Training. I'm possible also going for Iron Will and Familiar Bond to get a raven familiar who would mostly function as a messenger (and, as per the feat, wouldn't really have any magic abilities).
I do have some questions: First, are there any languages beyond Orc and Common? Gara still has two bonus languages to go and I have no idea what languages exist within the setting.

![]() Hello all, the one Halfblood reporting in. The way I see it Gara would have joined the army of her own free will. She wasn't born into service as her human father was a free man. So theoretically she could quit the job but I suspect that in practice that is more or less impossible. Her becoming a lieutenant would have been a field promotion after her predecessor met an unfortunate end. She was a scout before being promoted so she probably knows Gorthug best of all. He might even have a grudging respect for her. The fact she uses a similar weapon, though hers is made from the horns of enormous antelopes, and might technically be a better archer than he is would only add to that. She'd consider herself mostly Orc though she does have fond memories of her human father. As such she also is convinced that not all humans are weak and nasty. Then again, most Orcs probably consider her to be weak and too human in mind. She also is somewhat spiritual, revering both the the spirits of the land and the spirits of her ancestors. |
