I could roll with the pregen Krisanna the bold. (if possible I’d tweak her a little bit). These are the changes I would suggest but I could easily play her as is.
It seems like this is the perfect AP for a mounted build. I think I’ll submitting a fighter (drill sergeant so he can share team work feats with the rest of the party, I’m open to suggestions on other archetypes) and hunter. I’m picturing him riding a bear or a boar. I’ll play around with the concept a bit.
GM BrOp wrote: I also want to state that for those of you not familiar with the rules (which I assume is most of you), is that this game was modeled on Runequest as it existed back in the 80s. This means that PCs are pretty squishy, and that players need to be cautious before throwing themselves into combat. This is pretty much the default design idea for OSR games, and Dragonbane generally falls into this group. That’s what I love about OSR games!

Update on my vigilante….. moving on to something else. The vigilante class is frustrating. I love the flavor but otherwise blah :( However, I’ve latched onto a concept that I’m excited about (but probably not optimized). A halfling, slayer (cleaner archetype). He is a former slave to the Serini family… cleaned up after the family’s indiscretions and ran away/escaped with their daughter after they preformed some diabolical rite on her. He will be strength based and focused on halfling fighting style (improvised weapons since slaves can’t train with real ones). Also, may dip into halfling opportunist down the road. Also, visiting my son in Texas but over the next week but it shouldn’t effect my submission (other than coming in at the last minute). Finally, are we allowed a drawback for an extra trait? Regards
Okay here is what I have so far. Let me know what you think. I am willing to make any changes if my ideas don’t fit the setting or you want to discuss concepts further. Thanks. 10 Minute Background:
************************* 10-minute Background ************************* Step 1: Background and Concept elements (at least 5) (history, description, personality) 1. (Description) Kwatako is a tall and well-muscled oread standing a full head over six feet, broad shouldered with long with ropey limbs of corded muscle and sinew. His onyx colored skin is smooth and glossy which accentuates the hard, dangerous lines of his body. He has smoldering black eyes which are as dark as ash. His gloomy, emotionless, almost sinister face is that of a warrior. Like many monks he wears his head shaven and has no facial hair. Kwatako has a loud booming voice like stone breaking. 2. (Personality) Kwatako is a serious and ardent practitioner of the martial way. As such he tries to exercise temperance and patience on his journey towards self-perfection. He is stoic but is stern when necessary, often standing up for the down trodden and oppressed. While Kwatako is dour those who are close to him appreciate his wry sense of humor. The hulking monk is a lover of debate, learning, and physical challenges, embracing these as experiences on his path of enlightenment and a way of honoring his ancestors. His deep voice often gives advice in riddles, aphorisms, and metaphors with a knowing grin. 3. (Background) Kwatako is the imbewu of Oshi a reverend master of the root and trained at the monastery in the Olukhulu Canyon. He was abandoned on the steps of monastery a a toddler and apprenticed at an early age. As a result he does not remember his tribe or family, although most guess he is probably from the Nightshade tribe. Kwatako believes he was abandoned by his family because of the color of his bark but does not let this prevent him from honoring his ancestors. 4. (Background) Kwatako is an onyx, a rare, bark color (skin color to other elens) among oreads with more earth than forest running through his veins. Some believe he is a corrupted blackblood marked as a practitioner of the dark. As such he has faced discrimination and persecution at the hands of other oreads. As a result he found solace in the library of the monastery and developed a love of exploring the old tomes. 5. (Background) The monk knelt in a fertile field for three days with his right hand buried in the rich soil. Meditating and chanting an ancient ritual in hopes of capturing one of his ancestor’s spirits to improve his martial abilities. Step 2: Goals (one character, one player)
2 (Character) Kwatako desires to be a master one day and have his own imbewu. Honoring his ancestors by passing The Way of the Root from one generation to the next. Step 3: Secrets (one known, one unknown)
Step 4: People (at least two allies/friends and one adversary)
2. (Ally) Leshki - a female, fellow oread monk, friend, and occasional lover of Kwatako. He has considered asking for her hand in marriage and Embedding gems with her. Leshki is a Siphithiphithi champion in addition to being a powerful martial artist. 1. (Adversary) Rutgo - an oread and chieftain from a minor tribe. Kwatako bested and embarrassed the elan in an orean wrestling match at a Summer Meet several years ago. Since then the bitter oread has gone out of his way to make trouble for Kwatako. Step 5: Three Memories, Mannerisms, or Quirks
2. (Memory) Upon his return to his quarters Kwatako is surprised to find his master, Oshi, waiting at the doorway for him. ”Come,” Oshi said as she motioned him into the training hall. As he entered the training hall he is met by the pungent smell of incense. ”Kneel,” his master directed and together they knelt, slowing their breathing, beginning their meditation, watching the stick of incense burn, smoke wafting toward the ceiling. After, a few moments Kwatako found his center, his cares hopes and fears fading into the emotionless void. A piece of ash falls off the end of the incense stick and Oshi announced, ”A lake fills drop by drop. There is little more that I can teach you. You must now go into the world to learn.” Kwatako bowed in gratitude, ”Ngiyabonga master.” 3. (Memory) Kwatako stood before his master and the abbot their long faces revealing the dire nature of their request. As foretold a new Quiet Elder recently blossomed within Hearth and Kwatako was asked to investigate. His master’s final admonition rings in his ears, ”There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to perfection; not going all the way, and not starting.”
Build Ideas: Looking at using the alternate racial traits: 1. granite skin (trades energy resistance for +1 natural armor) 2. crystalline form (trades away earth affinity) gain a +2 racial bonus to AC against rays and, once per day, they can deflect a single ray attack targeted at them as if they were using the Deflect Arrows feat. I would like to use the unchained monk archetype Perfect Scholar (link). For the following reason:
Also, I would like to take the following non core feats
Finally I’m looking at these traits
Miner Cotren wrote: A new Quiet Elder recently grew with Hearth -- your master would have sensed this change coming beforehand, and sent you south to the capital city. You ran into some trouble along the way (it could have been Moon, Dreams, or a number of other things) but eventually you found your way to the city. You've only been here about a week, and you are still getting acclimated. Sounds perfect. I’ll flesh it out a bit.
Alright, I’ve settled on a concept. My oread, Kwatako by name, (I think)will be a monk of the root, seed of Oshi (a revered master), who trained at the monastery in the Olukhulu Canyon. Working on his 10 minute background. Need help with how he got to Hearth? Did he or his master have a dream of a Phoenix telling him to come? Thoughts? Edit: Is unchained monk an option?
I agree darkvision makes things easier. Just like not tracking encumbrance makes things easier. Your example points out exactly why darkvision is a bit broken. As far as goblin slayer goblins go, I have no clue, as I am not familiar with the source material. However, this is a game, and if we can agree that they don’t have darkvision, then in our version they don’t. I’m not going to get hung up about it.

My irl group has used this rule for 12+ years. It actually works out really well in play.
Sounds good. As far as background goes (painting with broad brushstrokes). I see this Skald as being a shield bearer for a previous member of the guild (probably a sibling or spouse), on their first mission (perhaps they were betrayed?). As a result the Skald is haunted by their past and has their former member watching over them// haunting them. Mechanically I think the Possessed Hand feat (link) would be cool. And perhaps the spirit totem line of rage powers. Looking drawbacks and story feats to help supporters this idea. I’ll need help on were they could be from. If they were betrayed, does the pc know about it? who was it and why? Any help filling in the blanks would be appreciated. Also, I’ll have to figure out why they joined the guild to begin with.
Reposted from recruitment thread: I’m still thinking Human, Skald (Fated Champion archetype). Quick question. In PFS play they let you switch out scribe scroll feat for the extra performance feat. Would you be willing to do allow this switch. As far as what I’d like to see from the game. A little intrigued within the guild. Otherwise I’m open to anything.
Ok. I made my rolls in the recruitment thread. If I was wrong, sorry. Any way here they are cut and paste. If I need to reroll I will. roll 1: 3d6 + 6 - 3 ⇒ (4, 3, 4) + 6 - 3 = 14
Before racials I’m thinking S: 17 D: 14 C: 14 I: 13 W: 11 Ch: 15 Might switch int and wis

Golden Pantaloons of course. What’s hiding in your closet?
Look at the stars
Yeah, they were all yellow I came along
And it was called Yellow So then I took my turn
And it was all yellow Your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones
'Cause you were all yellow I drew a line
And it was all yellow And your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones
It's true
