great

Am I good to use a tiefling for my character concept? I know I'm not necessarily in but don't want to spend too much time on it, if i can't use the race.

Dotting...been wanting to play this AP...

However, i'm a complete noob at PbP...or roleplay via PbP...

Any room for noobs.

I was thinking a Tiefling (if allowed) Ranger...human works too, if not

Here's hoping...

Look at the demonic traits and counter accordingly...

Mind if I use some of this for a background story for a character?

Yeah, it's like the Barbarian who only has an axe and no other weapon...

uhh, dude, you can't slice everything with an axe...gotta have contingencies...

The magus I played once upon a time focused on electricity for his attacks...

Example of not pulling weight: Not effective in combat, not effective in social situations, not able to solve problems in the game, or very rarely being able to do so.

At some tables the GM makes up for this, but like I said how good you need to be will vary by table for too many reasons to mention. Optimizing and not optimizing are both valid options, as long as everyone is on the same page.

Got a guy who is like this in our group...he does something good every 2-4 sessions...and he is good at spellcraft checks...other than that...he has a magus, but plays like a wizard/sorcerer, and is scared to get his character into the mix of combat...smh...

We've been giving him a lot of leeway but it's getting to a point...

I try to find a balance between the two...optimize for what I want to play but also not to be a hinderance to the party...

Come up with a wish...then see a lawyer in the town and have it drawn up in a document and triple checked for loopholes.

ok...so being one of the players in both campaigns...I admit than when I got my 300K in gold...I went to all the taverns and popped bottles of ale and made it rain silver pieces on many a wench...who didn't? What, just me?

okay, seriously, I went for better armor and better weaponry...magical, of course, and a couple magic items...necklace of fireballs, if I remember was one...

although a little concerned, that it was too much too soon, but as it was explained to me, our two leaders...an arrogant wizard and a shifty rogue were doing these deals and were making the rolls for said negotiations and said loot...I can't fault the DM when the characters make the rolls for negotiating payment...

Everyone went a little crazy and our DM calmed us down and pointed out that even though you have all these magic items...you're still only level 3, i.e., still somewhat squishy...

Still...those who wanted really extravagant magic items had to wait for them to be crafted or brought in...when a few came back and the stuff/money was "stolen"...no one persisted in hunting down the thieves and I don't even think it was thought of by anyone to do so...

Go to next mission...hey guess what...it's in Alkenstar...no magic...i thought we were gonna be so screwed...we still came out fine...

New campaign...found a Lady who was about to be enslaved...got in good with the Pathfinders/Grand Lodge and heads of state...got put on retainer and reward/payment in gems...someone has the idea of getting the gems cut to get better money...rolled a nat 20 on said roll to determine value...we got 36K out it...first thing I said..."we find a place to rent and HQ our adventures from here for the now"... Pathfinders/Grand Lodge helped us out with a better place for the price we were paying...i upgraded to masterwork weapon and +1 armor...nothing else, cause hey lesson learned...

I think it's one of those things where if you're going to do something, be thorough...gotta a wish...take it to a lawyer and have it looked over meticulously...going to a shady dealer should have possible consequences (random roll?) than going to reputable dealer...did you look at the ship before putting down 10K gold?...if you don't ask "what do I see when I look in the room" the DM may or may not give you the info...

I think it's a lesson learned but that's just me...

If it bleeds...we can kill it!

The Enlightened Warrior trait will allow you to be neutral, or neutral good, and take levels in monk.

It is in the Blood of Angel book, and if you are not Aasimar, you will need the Adopted trait.

Interesting...thnx!

I suppose what we are saying, Fiendish Dr Wu, is there is no way in the 'rules' for a monk-type with no class ki pool to attain it outside of gaining a level in a class that does have ki. It would have to be through house rules to some degree.

I get that...i like the discussion though and want to see what everyone else thinks... :-)

Because ninjas are associated with martial arts almost as much as what we think of when we think of monks? Besides, there's more to martial arts than just Kung Fu, plenty of styles use weapons, and a lot of them were designed to be used with weapons.

Anyway, I think Riuken has it right. Anyway, regardless of how you come to it, becoming a monk isn't an immediate change. The class is in the "trained" age category, after all.

I hate making star wars references, but the dying master could have been Yoda. Luke goes to find him hoping to be taught a better way to fight, Yoda instead teaches him some hokey religion while effortlessly performing feats Luke cannot. Luke tries to do it on his own until he realizes that the hokey religion is what lets Yoda do it, perhaps because it's a focus, or magic or something. Luke embraces the religion whole hog, and then becomes a lawful level one Qiggong Monk.

True about ninjas...yes, plenty of styles use weapons...which is another thread...monks don't get access to a lot of the weapons they should if based solely on Shaolin Monks...they don't even get straight sword(Wu Dang)or broadsword(Dao) as part of their list...come on, son!

Yes, Riuken makes good points...but according to the archetype description it says they are "gifted", not trained, with the abilities...could that not also be saying an "innate" understanding of how to use them...it happens in movies and books...

Granted, but a rogue can gain a ki pool by just selecting it as a Rogue Talent...seriously?

Sounds good, but I don't know it it would be worth it for just 2 points; especially in the higher levels.
Could always keep taking the feat every other level. It's not very good, but that may be the price of wanting to do something so odd. Of course with sufficient reasoning a GM may just remove the alignment restriction on monks. Regardless, all of this belongs in the homebrew forums and not rules. The way the rules are written you'd have to either be lawful or get a ki pool from another source (such as ninja).

We are discussing the rules and how it can or cannot be done within the rules of the game...

Why is it odd?

Nope, can't take martial artist and Qinggong as far as I can tell...Ninja...that's another thread all together...why does the ninja get a ki pool (because there would have been outrage?) when he is a Rogue alternate class and not a Monk alternate...and yes, I know a Rogue can get ki pool as a Rogue Trick...it shouldn't be a class feature...but an optional one...

I don't see why you couldn't. Martial Artist still gets High Jump, Quivering Palm and (oddly) Abundant Step that he can swap for qinggong powers. You just gotta manage to get a ki pool from somewhere else in order to use them.

I mean, it's not a good option, but it does seem like it's possible.

There Ki Pool is also based off Charisma too, so you have to be even more careful with your ability scores. You'd also need to take two levels...

MacGurcules wrote:
Presumably, you could take Martial Artist along with Qinggong Monk in order to waive the alignment requirement. The Qinggong powers aren't going to be terribly useful without a ki pool, of course. Though, I suppose you could get at least a few points by taking a couple of levels in Ninja.

The reason I ask is the description of the Qinggong Archetype says, "...and a few are gifted these abilities by a dying qinggong master." It doesn't stipulate that the person "gifted" these abilities have to be lawful.

I mean there are plenty of scenarios I can come up with where the qinggong master leaves his abilities to "roguish young man/woman who has displayed good moral values and honor".

Thoughts?

I could've sworn you said this was for entertainment purposes only...wasn't really to be taken seriously...

Although I do like the discussion and I love the suggestions I'm getting, I think everyone is missing the spirit of this thread.

Curly hates using magic because of all the different spells and the limitations and I'm agreeing with her. Unfortunately, we NEED a wizard for an upcoming campaign, and I'm the ONLY candidate right now. Not to mention my GM absolutely DETESTS magic in PF!

I need someone to either a)defend the current magic system and explain why it's so amazing or b)give the reasons why it should be shot in the head and replaced with something else, and if it's going to be replaced, what should it be replaced with? However, I will also accept suggestions like the one xanthemann gave for tweaking the system.

I hate to say it, but when you get down to it the magic system in PF is quite confusing to a lot of players and is more of a broken shovel than a good tool!

How about a magus? they focus on bringing the pain with a blade infused with a spell and are limited on spell casting but it would fit more with a dwarf fighter taking a level of magus than wizard...

Maybe the possibility of a bite or claw attack...I too wanted a wolf compliment to the catfolk and created a race for a campaign...I can post what I have if you like...always willing to share but don't want to hijack a thread or anything...

They actually have a module for this...The Ruby Phoenix Tournament...but you probably already know this by now...

Blindsight and Blindsense seem like they would work and have him go the Zen Archer route (just off the top of my head) would seem to fit the whole motiff.

Ideas are sparking, but they are mine I tell you...mine!
