Background When Roarke was born, everyone in the family knew that he was special. The Mercier family has been on the rise since they received the Imperial commission from the Molthune government, a prestigious post in the army was guarenteed. After the great battle the family moved up towards Druma, where they established their lands. Roarke was a golden-haired child, fair of face and quick of wits. The potential was clear that he would become the successor to the family. When Jace was born three summers later his parents celebrated, he was to be trained to protect his brother both physically and spiritually. Jace trained as did bro, that loved him. Roarke was betrothed to a local Baron's daughter. Jace trained in the ways or Irori, although he spent most of his time with an acerbic monk. Who taught him moderation, how to enjoy himself and they joys of travelling as they moved around the estates homesteads. Healing, bringing happiness and travelling through different cultures - expanded his horizons making sure to learn about other social strata's. As soon as Roarke was old enough, he took command of a troops and engaged in skirmishes and successfully drove a rampaging band of Orcs from the nearby lands. He felt at home amongst the soldiers there honesty and coarse humour, the youngster Jace's home. And Roarke generated loyalty amongst his troops soon they proudly wore his sigil and carried aloft his banner. Roarke knew his own mind and that he must prove himself to the other nobles if their house was rise to the top. Thus he got the pair accepted an an envoy to Lastwall. This was announced to the Molthune court, where jealous nobles plotted. Thus as they took towards the area they were under a vile ambush, his loyal troops defended Roarke who never took a step back and shed blood and tears for death of each of his men. Despite Jaces efforts and healing magiks, they were doomed but still Roarke fought on. Finally, as a relief column was on the horizon Roarke was stuck down an axe lodged in his back. Jace was left standing over him fighting for both their lives. The axe-head could not be removed without killing him, thus he was taken home in a litter. Roarke's spirits didn't drop as the brothers came home, he was glad that they were alive when no other was. The slow procession home was grim for Jace, he knew he had failed - his brother had been crippled and their friends dead. Once they got home Roarke was reunited with his bride, upon seeing his condition she locked herself away in a tower. When she came out, Isabel had taken charge of the holding. Jace was banished from his home, even despite his brothers protestations. Waiting for weeks amongst the common folk, Jace learnt little more of his brothers condition other than that Isabel had influenced him and that their relationship was cold. Then a cold autumn eve, a group of roustabouts displaced Jace from the tavern he was lodging at. They continued to harry him off his familial lands. Deep in his heart he knew, that his place was out in the world. Making up for his failures and making people happy in a way his brother could never be. Personality Likes to make people happy to make up for his perceived failures. On his finger is the signet ring of his people as the next heir - as Roarke will never have children. |
