background:
Estelle originally hailed from a simple farming community in the contested lands. While the contested lands lacked a highly involved government, despite or because of both Erathia and AvLee claiming it, and offered many opportunities for settlers to make their own fortune, it unfortunately also left them open to attacks from more organized forcus. Perhaps the worst of such possibilities happened when she was around six years old. The village, Hamel, was the target of a ‘harvesting’, where a Deyjan necromancer and his undead horde swarmed the countryside and killed all living humanoids to raise them as undead skeletons, zombies, and liches. The one exception to this were small children. Not out of any sentiment, but because their skeletons weren’t strong enough to make reliable soldiers. Instead, they were given to the vampires as slaves to be fed upon. While she doesn’t remember much of this time, perhaps numbed to the horror of it all, she still remembers the piercing sensation of teeth going through her neck. The only reason she survived in the end was because of intervention by Gem, a druid sorceress and former Eratian general, who managed to defeat this horde and rescue the slaves. Afterwards, she was sent to AvLee and given to the church of Shaymara to raise her. That marked the beginning of the second stable period of her life, where she slowly recovered and was instructed in the ways of the forests and wilds as she grew up. She made friends, including a fellow refugee boy named Flynn who had a dream of one day becoming a great hero and showing all the world, especially those in AvLee who didn’t like hosting refugees, their real value! Somewhat caught up in his infectious enthusiasm, she decided to enlist in the military alongside him when they were old enough. Unfortunately, not long after basic training was exactly when the restoration wars started. Now part of the AvLee armed forces, they were both immediately deployed. For her skill as a healer, Estelle spent the war mostly working in the first aid tents and taking care of an endless stream of injured and dying. Over time, this wore on her, especially when the soon-casualties spoke to her about the tactical ineptitude of the general she was assigned to. This Lord Kirrus would have used his wealth and political friends to secure a place of power in AvLee and was only interested in mission that gave him prestige, never issued tactical withdrawals and didn’t care about the amount of dead his forces would incur to meet those goals. Eventually, this led to a breaking point when Flynn, now an underling for Kirrus, refused to back a mutiny initiative by some camp leaders - including her - seemingly choosing his rank and future prospects over her and the lives of the troops. With her trust in both him and the military leadership of AvLee broken, she immediately fled, and has since roamed around the contested lands, scraping by a living mostly with her training as a soldier, as she decided to hide her ability to heal in case the army was still looking for her. Until an opportunity arose to perhaps still make a better future for herself… build overview:
Estelle multiclasses into herald caller cleric at level 2 and stays there for the rest of her career. In the end, this compromise with a fighter level was the best I could come up with for something that could do all the things I wanted it to. It has some martial ability, great healing and support (Luck domain ability for support, specialization will be heavily into healing abilities like channel, takes healer’s hands and incredible healer feats at level 3 and 5), and has decent skillpoints (4 to 5/level on cleric; diplomacy, heal, perception and sense motive. Will add knowledge religion and planes later). It grows well into late game too as herald caller cleric specializes in summoning, and just like in the HOMM games we all know summons can be quite potent :P It’s true that she starts as fighter and that her background as a healer doesn’t come online until level 2, true, so I wrote her backstory in a way that gives her a reason to hide her healing abilities until she gets something to believe in again, such as the group on this quest. Either because of trauma in the first aid tents or because of lingering fear that perhaps the AvLee army might still come after her because of support for the mutiny attempt (despite how long it’s been, and that it’s probably an irrational fear). I hope that will be allowed and is credible enough of an explanation. questions:
