The path to becoming a summoner, for many, is fairly different depending. Esmeralda Salazar, prior to finally invoking and bonding with her eidolon, was merely a member of the pristine Salazar family of Cheliax, city of sin and devils. Subterfuge and cutthroat decisions were an everyday occurrence among the family, mind you, but one thing in particular always tantalized Esmeralda in her studies to pull from the ichor of Golarion, a being molded by her personality. What would it look like? She asked herself this question daily, consistently, and modestly.
All throughout her life, the Salazar family followed Mammon, a devil of greed. Mind you they paid him no favors, barring a sacrificial tax that appealed to him and granted the local clerics the spells they needed. This was a mild annoyance to her, as Esmeralda was far greedier than the people who worried about piety and the safety of the ordeals and keeping the tax. No, Esmeralda, in a way, embodied the beliefs of Mammon himself. All-consuming greed and coin. Do nothing without pay, and shun charity.
In one regard did she not seem like Mammon. So long as she got her share, she cared little about what others did with their money, save for a few coarse words of wasting and wanting. It was this very shred of decency she’d had that allowed her to have to atone for her sins.
Upon the ritual day where penance was paid, and Mammon placed his influence upon her Eidolon, he cursed it with an all-consuming greed. It was, in a way, a punishment for her charity. The Eidolon erupted from the ground, tearing out of a portal in the earth and plunging it’s deep, chained fingers into the floor. The creature came out, looking as if it had been freshly unbound. A humanoid in it’s own right, it crawled toward her, standing up in golden armor that seemed to be welded to it's body made of small golden plates. It's arms tied to it's chest and no visible weapon.
It presented a hand to her, from it's hip, another small, useless limb, and she somehow knew what it wanted. It wanted payment for its services. Ever greedy, Esmeralda had no coin upon her for the ritual, save for the ceremonial dress, and in mere moments the creature, under influence of the third circle, sundered the heads from all that were there with just its claws. The majority of the Salazarian family died on that day, awash in blood until Esmeralda gathered the strength she needed to banish the Eidolon.
Fleeing from the manor, she grabbed all that she would need. One item, upon her exit, seemed to call to her as she'd left. Upon the wall was an unwieldy Bastard sword that not even the strongest of men within the family had been able to wield, and yet, she thought to herself. perhaps it does have some use now... Hoisting the weapon on high, she fled to the next room and looked for everything she could use as well as what little gold she could grab. When she arrived to her room, the thousands’ of gold that she’d had hidden away from her family was gone without a trace, save for a small letter written in infernal that read “The price has been paid” upon a satin cloth that burned away as soon as she’d read it.
She immediately fell into both fury and despair, as she’d been left with nothing. Nothing but a useful curse. Then there she was. No family, no funds, no servants. She was alone, covered in a splatter of blood, and she knew of nothing that she could do.
Esmeralda didn’t stick around Cheliax to explain what had happened, and thus far, the city knows only that the Salazar family died gruesomely all in the same room, and that everything they had had been stolen. It didn’t take long for the information to become worthless and old news, and no one bothered to even count the bodies. Perfect for leaving unmolested, yet, somewhat empty.
---
It’s been years since that incident, and Esmeralda has come to terms with it. In those many years, she found herself among the grand city of Absalom with a desire to become a pathfinder, though she knew very little of them save that they came across some grand treasures. At least, that's what they told her in the stories. Most were in it for the exploration and retrieval of relics but... Esmeralda figured she would do what she could to keep a few.
It was difficult, to put it simply. At first she's made it a point to not summon Penance under any circumstance, but quickly realized that just having him around was enough to garner both the admiration, attention, and worry of her peers. No one knew why she paid it, really, and many other summoners she'd met in her travels found the habit unnecesary, and she was completely in agreement, but shrugged it off as penny pitching, which grated on her very few shreds of sanity.
Finishing her final task with a flourish of power, Esmeralda couldn't help but realized she'd gained nothing in her years as a pathfinder. Every juicy morsel she'd obtained went to a higher up, and almost every extra bit of treasure she'd gained had disappeared conveniently in the night among the lodges.
Having finished her training and joining the shadow lodge, she was assigned a mission within Magnimar of which she was both excited to go to, and reap the rewards of. She cared little for what was to be done, but knew that at such a grand distance away from the grand lodge that she'd be more than capable of maintaining some actual payment now. The very thought of that caused her to grin wildly as the carriage arrived at the doorstep after a long trip.
"Let's hope their coin is good." she said with a wry smile, playing with the Azure coin of Mammon in the carriage. As the car came to a halt, she placed it in her pouch, smiling with a cool, collected excitement.
