Guardian of the Kalpavendi-Kuruoo Like all of the Kalpavendi clan of Tengu, Eser is a guardian of the great tree, locally known as Kalpavendi-Kuruoo, or “Knee of the Great Kaplavendi Tree.” The tree, a towering, three-hundred foot moss-hung ancient cyprus, is thought to be a “knee” of the world tree, as it is of ancient age, exhibits robust, almost supernatural health and size, and as such is worthy of protecting. The Kalpavendi clan, upon discovering the tree in their wanderings, stopped migrating immediately and set about as caretakers for the tree. This happened over 370 years ago; to this day, the clan guards the tree from outside threats (most notably in the early years of their settlement, loggers, though the citizens of Otari and the Kalpavendi clan have long made peace with each other). As a guardian, Eser is trained in the clan’s warrior ways, which mostly consist of physical training, weapons training on ancestral weapons, and entering a state of wrath in battle. Druidic and animist magical traditions supplement guardians in a fight, and druids, clerics of Chamidu, and animist priests are important members of the clan.
Medic All guardians of the Kalpavendi-Kuruoo are trained medics. This training was originally intended to be useful in a pinch in case they are separated from their village or priests. Over time, this has become an asset to the people of Otari, especially the local theives’ guild and local loggers.
Osprey Club healer Worshippers of Chamidu are unable to treat an illness; most all of the Guardians of the Kalpavendi-Kuruoo are practitioners of a syncretic faith that blends Chamidu’s teachings with Druidic lore and animist beliefs. Seven years ago, the local Otari Theives’ Guild, the Osprey Club, discovered this when a smuggler, Long Hal, injured and sick after a run-in with a local aberration, stumbled upon the sacred tree and was patched up by the tengu and escorted back to town. Since, they have worked out an agreement with the Kalpavendi-Kuruoo where the tengu clan helps the Osprey Club with needed medical attention for a little coin. The tengus’ market rate is well below other healers in town, which is good for the Osprey Club; for their part, the tengu don’t much care – the coin is enough to provide them with what little goods they need directly from Otari. This open secret is now know by most of the town, and the desperate and the destitute have been known to approach the tengu clan for medical aid. The Kalpavendi-Kuruoo now make weekly visits to town, where they check in with the Osprey Club and set up a healer’s booth in the town square for a day or two (for more urgent medical care, the Osprey Club sends a falcon messenger to the tengus; desperate townsfolk can pay for the privilege of a message sent by the guild or brave the swamps). Eser has taken to volunteering for these visits. She finds Otari fascinating and life at the sacred tree quite dull in comparison, and secretly relishes her weekly jaunts to town.
Loggers and loggerheads Historically speaking, Otari loggers discovered the Kalpavendi-Kuruoo just seven years after the tengus settled at the great tree. Their first contact was… bloody. A centuries-long detante set in, where the strange and violent tengu clan was avoided by the people of Otari, and they were viewed as yet another danger in the swamps to be avoided. Although occasional skirmishes happened over the years, the two groups existed largely peacefully if in isolation, until Long Hal’s unintended visit to the sacred tree changed the dynamic. As the tengu have begun to visit Otari, one logging concern (TBD) has been working with the tengus on sustainable harvesting and forestry. Other logging groups still often bear the tengu grudges (see below).
