Silver Crusade 4/5

Well, I'm out of the running for RPG Superstar (for this year, anyway). But that means I will have more time to prep for the six games (!) of Pathfinder Society I'll be running this weekend. It's going to be a blast! :-D

I feel compelled to ask - where's the name from? (It would be just too far-fetched if it were from the Hebrew נפליג, "we shall sail", wouldn't it? Right? Right?)

It's kind of a Latin portmanteau: Navis (meaning "ship") and Affligo (meaning "break/damage").

Sorry to disappoint the Hebrew-speakers out there ;-)

Wait, go back to the point where your animal companion can use the Heal skill... It's otherwise reasonable and well-written, but WHAT? (Now imagining a velociraptor maintaining pressure on a wound with those claws and just making it worse. :P)

Judy, your comment is exactly the sort of effect I was going for. Yes, having an animal companion try to heal is probably not a very good idea. However, the skill can be used untrained, and most ACs have a somewhat decent Wisdom score. With a DC of 15 to provide first aid, it's at least possible (if not likely) for the animal to stabilize the PC.

It probably wouldn't be my first choice, but if it's between that and the character dying, at least you have a shot. Plus, I like the imagery of the companion licking the wounds of the fallen character.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I really appreciate it and look forward to wowing you with my encounter next round. There is one thing I would like to address:

Interesting idea, but I would like to see them being actual Undeads.

If this were a home game, I probably would have made it an undead. However, good-aligned undead are a touchy proposition, and the world of Golarion has no precedent for good undead (at least not that I could find). Rather than break that unwritten rule or change the alignment of my monster, I decided to make it an outsider instead.

I think the concept still works as an outsider. If it helps, think of it as a spirit or soul, rather than a ghost.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

It seems odd to me at least that people who made it happen to also be really huge voters. You would think that they would be exempt from voting or their votes would be removed from the contest prior to a result phase.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense to me. The people who voted a lot are the same people who are really into the game and spend a lot of time doing things like looking at other people's magic item submissions. At least in my opinion, the effect is correlation, not causation.

I voted for probably 200 items this year, and in that time, I managed to see my own item only once. Did I vote for it? Yes. Did that one vote significantly impact the outcome of the contest? Not likely.

Hello, everyone! I'm thrilled to be a part of RPG Superstar, and incredibly grateful that you all liked my magic item (Crest of the Fallen) so much. Thank you!

I grew up all over the Midwest (my father was a pastor) and am currently living in Fishers, Indiana (just north of Indianapolis), having just bought a house there last year. I'm 27 years old (3³), and work as a computer programmer, writing point-of-sale software (read: cash registers) for retail stores.

My RPG history starts way back when I was about 12 years old and played the old West End Games d6 Star Wars. From there, I learned to play Dungeons and Dragons (starting about three months before 3rd Edition came out), and from there I stuck with d20 right on into Pathfinder.

I'm currently in two regular gaming groups. For my Sunday night group, I'm GMing Reign of Winter, which is a blast so far. My Wednesday night group finished Rise of the Runelords just over a year ago after an epic 2 1/2 year run, and is now dabbling in other games. Currently I'm a really big fan of the Fate system. But if I win RPG Superstar, I promise I'll stick with Pathfinder! :-)
